I am looking to switch over to sprint (SERO) but am conflicted on ether getting the curve or the q9c. With the Q9C and SERO plan , you get everything - Data, TV, GPS, push email etc.. for $30. But w/ the Curve - you can probably just get internet. And would have to shell out another $30 for data (2x the cost). Is there a reason, other than the phone itself, why people are choosing the Curve (and paying 2x the cost or just with limited features) over any other smart phone?

The primary advantage with Blackberries would be the email support. E-mail is "pushed" (sent automatically) to the phone.
The Operating System tends to be a little more stable than Palm or Windows Mobile devices.
A lot of it also has to do with the newfound popularity for Blackberries since Research in Motion is starting to focus on the consumer end with their products.
This being a new device has also generated I think a lot of activity regarding the Curve, especially on the CDMA side.
The main problem with the Blackberry devices is like you mentioned, that it requires a Blackberry data plan, so you either need to add a Blackberry Internet Service (Personal) or Blackberry Enterprise Service (Business) onto your existing account or if you just need personal e-mail, the Simply Unlimited Plans do allow for BIS as well.
The difference between BIS and BES lies in the e-mail capabilities. BIS will poll the mail server every 15 minutes vs. BES while costing more is constantly polling the server. This can mean for BIS customers, a delay of 15 minutes for e-mail to be pushed. Another major difference is that BES offers Microsoft Exchange Support so if you are running a MS Exchange Server, the device will sync Outlook's calendars and contacts.
For the individual user, it's a matter of personal preference. All smartphone platforms have their pros and cons.

Everyone is different with their needs. I personally wouldn't be able to get by without free incoming calls. Plus the reliability of the email is a plus.

Thinking about getting a curve, Are you sure the bis only polls server every 15 min?
I had a q9c for 3 weeks but had a few issues with it and returned it and went back to my v9m. But the motorolas both can be set to pool for email every 5 minutes. my main reason for the curve would be push email but don't need the bes.

why don't you get the centro?
I just couldn't stand the small keyboard that's why I bought the Curve. I dont have the bb plan yet but i got my browsing and maps back using opera/gmaps. I miss the threaded SMS on the centro. lost my picture mail, tv, and aim.

Yes. Mail sent to the carrier.blackberry.net account is instant but if you have your e-mail delivery set to a 3rd party (Gmail, Yahoo), it will generally poll the account every 15 minutes.
There are threads on other Blackberry forums that discuss the process further.

In my opinion the BB is the best buy it may cost you a few more $ to start with and the data plans are virtually the same so that is not an issue. Unless you need to use windows mobile for something specific the BB would be the best choice. I have tried lesser equipment in the past and find myself upgrading later so in the long run it costs me more $ and aggravation.

I've had BB's for several years now and I haven't ever even looked at another smartphone, my needs are met.
My friends will be getting a couple q9c's. I can't talk them into doing it right and getting blackberries because of the data plan. That is a crappy requirement, but its worth it IMO.

Great feedback. It seems many are just willing to shell out the extra money for the capabilities/reliability of the BB. To be honest, I really like the curve. Shape, size, look/feel, ...just everything about the phone is attractive IMO. But the idea of having to pay extra to get something that is already available on other phones for much less conflicted me. But as some said, you get what your willing to pay for and what will suit your needs. Thanks for all the replies.

Well, saying that is every 15 minutes is significantly over simplifying the process. It is significantly faster than that. Especially on Gmail, Yahoo, etc. where is continuous checking. I get my Gmail within 3 seconds of sending it.
Based on that same post that you quote from Sith Apprentice at BlackberryForums here is the short on how it does it.
BIS checks the account when it is set up.
BIS doesnt find email.
BIS checks back in 15 minutes.
BIS finds email.
BIS compresses and sends email to the handheld. (first 2kb of the email)
BIS checks back for mail in 3 minutes.
BIS doesnt find mail.

and so on and so forth.
rinse and repeat.
This is not for gmail/yahoo/carrier.blackberry.net account
With these accounts there should be little to no delay from receiving the email to the notification on your device. the BIS checks continously on gmail and yahoo, and since there is no mailbox for the carrier.blackberry.net account (the device is the mailbox) it is instant.

Another thing to consider is what is included in the BB Pack. You get PowerVision Access Pack ($15), Unlimited Txt ($10-15 depending on voice plan) and Sprint Navigation ($10) so you end up saving $5-10 a month versus having the services separate. All in all is a good value if you can benefit from the services that the plan provides.

What is Sprint Navigation?
I currently pay $25 for unlimited powervision and 1,000 texts every month. For $5 more I can get unlimited powervision, unlimited texts, and Sprint Navigation. If that's the case who wants a 755p, lol. I always thought the BB data plan was on top of my internet plan. I'm off to look for a new BB.
Coming from Palm OS, is it completely different? Easy to get the hang of?
