View Full Version : Google Maps on the Curve

I've a heavy Google Maps user and on my pearl gm would pretty much always be spot on with the "my location" feature. Usually within 10-50 meters of where I was and it would follow me and have a little arrow telling me which way i'm going. I've been trying all day with the curve and the best I could get is within 1700 meters of my location, sometimes within 5000 meters :irked: . I've allowed GPS and everything on it.

Anyone know anything about this???

I saw this on my friends Verizon curve and figured it was just because they have the GPS locked. I am also hoping that this isnt bug. I should have mine by friday :)

Glad this thread was made, I am experiencing the same thing. 1700 meters as well for me.

GPS enabled and all, looks like I'm in the same boat as you guys. 1700 meters is all that I can get. I didn't have this issue with my 8703e so I guess its a Curve thing. Pretty weird if you ask me.

How accurate is your GPS with the Blackberry Maps program? Mine is right on and I live in New York city. I have not tried the GMaps program, but I would assume it would be just as accurate considering it would be using the same GPS chip.

Sprint Nav is excellent for me... google maps is horrible compared to how it was on my pearl.

Totally agree with you. While I have used Google Maps on occasion (while on my 8703e), I have grown accustomed to using Sprint Nav on the road. I think it works awesome. It has never disappointed while I'm on the go. I understand many may be used to Google Maps but you should give Sprint Nav a shot. Just my 2 cents.

I'm getting 1700 meters too. Googlemaps was spot on with my 8830. Strange..

I think it is something with the version of google maps. I noticed in the google maps menu it say use bluetooth GPS, which mine has never displayed that. I don't think it is using the device GPS and just using tower triangulation

Same here, this obviously is a wide spread issue. I posted a topic within the official Google group for their software used on cellular devices. Here is a link to the thread I started that hopefully will bring the necessary attention to the Google staff.

Just a tidbit of info... This is also posted as a thread in the crackberry forums so it looks like a CDMA Curve problem. Hopefully RIM has been alerted of it and will try to have some sort of resolution for us in the works.

Does MS Live Search have a version compatible with the Curve?

BB Maps and MS Live and Telenav all works fine, but google maps isn't recognized when downloading as a phone that supports internal GPS. It is a phone recogization issue from what I gather. I am having the same issue with trying to get TellMe on my curve. Even though I am on sprint, and TellMe should work, the download process won't allow me to get it since it doesn't recognize my phone.

It's not the version. I installed that version on my Pearl a few days before I got the curve and it worked just as well as the previous version.

Sorry I'm not familiar with how the Google Maps on BB's work but how do you know it's 1700 meters off?

Sorry I'm not familiar with how the Google Maps on BB's work but how do you know it's 1700 meters off?

It tells you that it's an "Approximate location within 1700 meters"

It seems that it's systemic to the 8830. They discussed this a little on BBForums and it MAY (I have not tested this) be related to an issue with Google giving the user a version for a Pre-GPS BB OS due to an inability to recognize the newer browsers.

But I did not see anything confirming or denying it's success since it was a week ago when Sprint's wasn't in the user's hands yet.

Seems more likely that it's a firmware issue.

has anyone got it to show the exact location other than the 1700m?

EddiePCS

My 8830 does that all the time... It will, occasionally, use the hardware GPS and show my location within 10 meters or something low like that... But when it can't, for some reason, talk to the GPS receiver, it uses triangulate mode based off of cellphone towers. Then it says 1700 meters.

Mine puts me real close, a helluva lot closer than 1700 meters. At home indoors it put me at the end of the stree. I'd estimate 300'.

Ahh musta been a fluke because now its saying I am 1700 meters when I am on the other side of town. Oh well I've got 2 other free map programs.

i am really hoping this is a firmware problem and that it will be fixed in the near future.

I'm confused. What phone are you talking about?? The Curve or 8830??? Your user info has both..

I have to disagree with one of the posters. On my curve, MS live search is also off, but BB Maps is. On another forum site they are talking about MS Live search being off as well. On my 8703e, MS Live search was right on.

How lame... The "1700 meters" circle on my Curve is off by about 3 miles!!

How about naming it the "4800 meters" circle?

Oh well... I'll use Google Maps solely for searching nearby POI's, and Sprint Navigation for actually getting there...

It is lame !
My Pearl was dead-on putting me within 10 meters. I hope this gets resolved too, as 1700 isn't acceptable.

Major bummer. My Pearl is dead-on google maps and I like it because I can guide myself easily while driving (as opposed to having to fire up navigation and use a real address and all that).

I wanna pick up a Curve but this is troubling.

U can pinpoint ur location manually which I've been doing. But what if you're completely lost?? Kinda defeats the purpose of GPS o_0
