Just wondering what software programs are must haves for our new curves. While browsing crackberry.com I have noticed several software programs that look interesting. Has anyone tried BBSmart Email Viewer?

Please list software apps for your BB and your likes/dislikes. It will help all of us noobs decide what to fill our new BB's with.

___
Hey guys Nino here. Wanted to add one thing to the OP post.
For the software you are posting post in this thread, please post in this format so it is easy for everyone to read.
App: "App Name Here"
Cost: $$$
Trial: "trial length here"

Please do not post links to illegal sites or anything you think might not be right.

Thanks :)

BBSmart Email Viewer

Yahoo! oneSearch

BBSmart Email Viewer is the best....I tested it on a AT&T Curve, & that is what sold me on the Blackberry.....it made my emails look just as good as my Palm 755P did.

A must have!!!!

Is the Yahoo! oneSearch a free application? I may go ahead and purchase the email viewer as well. Have you tried Empower HTML Email Viewer PRO and can you (or anyone else) compare?

Please discuss all the Application/Software in this thread. Figured the sticky of this thread would make it easier for anyone to see and post in and wont have a hard time searching for an Application/Software.

Please post in this format to make it easier on everyone.

Accessory: "Name Accessory Here"
Where to buy: "Site/Store Here"
Cost: "$$$$ Here"
Picture: Post Picture
Your thoughts: "Post thoughts here about the accessory"

Hope this works out well for everyone.

I'm looking for a true threaded text program for the BB. Although it's threaded in the sense that it keeps a running text conversation, when I go into the messages folder that lists all of my messages, e-mail, etc., I see all of my sent and received text messages separately. I would like to see all of my text messages that are sent and recieved grouped together from one sender, kinda like the threaded SMS program on the Mogul. If I could get that, I would be a happy Crackberry addict. My thumb is getting tired of scrolling through all of my text messages, just to respond.

If you go into your messages, hit the Blackberry (menu) button, go to Options, then General Options, change SMS and Email Inboxes from Theme Controlled to Separate. That will at least separate out SMS messages from Emails and phone calls for you.

My search for a good weather app continues. On my Mogul I used Weather Panel. The thing I liked about it is that every half hour it downloaded current conditions, forecast data, and any number of radar images. Even if I didn't have wireless coverage I could go and view all of this information since it was stored on the phone. None of the apps I have found for weather on the BB function in this exact way. Here are my thoughts on the weather apps I have tried, perhaps they will help!

BBWeather (http://www.tateu.net/software/bb.php?f=BBWeather) - free, easy to use, current conditions and forecast, no radar.

WeatherBug (http://www.weatherbug.com/mobile/RIM/) - subscription, easy to use, all of the features I want, but does not save for offline viewing.

WeatherBug Direct (http://weather.weatherbug.com/labs/weatherbug-direct-for-blackberry.html) - free, easy to use, light on features, but it does give you a changing icon with current conditions so you don't have to open the software.

The Weather Channel (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&osId=1946&jid=DE93CD5EFF32XB7FCBE7F29DCX88XB3E&platformId=5&N=4294900651%2096941&R=185910&productId=185910) - subscription, can't get the trial to install so no idea on features (Error: No additional applications designed for your device were found.) Cannot locate an OTA install of it, contacted Handango about the issue. Yes, current versions of BDM and device software.

WeatherEye (http://weyebb.pelmorex.com/BlackBerry/)- free, easy to use, smaller cities not available, gives you a changing icon with current conditions so you don't have to open the software.

Any feedback or additional weather app links greatly appreciated!

Update to my quest for a Weather app-

I finally got The Weather Channel app installed, it had the best maps, best information, and I can get weather for the small town I live in. If you're going to pay for a weather app, I think this one is better than Weatherbug.

For anyone else who is buying BB software, use coupon code "SECRETSALE" for 15% off at Handango. :tu:

That program looks nice, I don't usually put music on my phone but I'll give this a try

It's outstanding! I have NEVER put music on my phone because I use to think it was lame because I had to use a dongle to make regular headphones work and then I would have to take the headphones off to actually use the phone.

But since the Curve has a 3.5mm jack for regular headphones and works very very well with the iPhone stereo headset, I find myself using it more than my iPod because I carry my phone everywhere I go. And when a call comes in it pauses my music and I take the call with my headphones still in using the microphone built into the Apple earbuds.

At first I thought it was going to be a crappy sound, but the sound quality is very good and with a 4 GB card, I see the Curve replacing my iPod Nano.... except for when I go jogging.

And as far as MiuTunes goes, the program runs so smoothly for it to be a beta and has been working flawlessly for me. It has many options to customize and compliments the Curve quite well... better yet, enhances the Curve! :tu:

Since I have an iPod, I just use itunes to convert my songs into 30 second ringtones. The phone will accept aac and mp3 and probably other formats. I then just paste the ringtone in the ringtones folder in desktop manager.

I have not put a movie on my phone yet. I imagine I may one day being that i have an 8gb card in my curve. I use DVDFab Platinum to rip DVD's. In order to get it into the format you are looking for though you will have to pay for the program. There is a free version but it will just rip the DVD's and not change the format. I imagine if you look hard enough you will be able to find free software that will do what you want.

Cost: FREE
Trial: Freeware

Viigo is by far the best RSS reader out there for the Blackberry. You can add your feeds from Google, My Yahoo or manually through the application. Can be set to autoupdate on specific intervals, or you can manually update it. I've been using this program since my 8703e days and haven't been disappointed. Check it out at Getviigo.com from your BB browser.

For my Treo, I used iTunes and just changed the start/stop time and quality (to keep it small). So far, on my Curve, I just picked what song I wanted and used the menu key (I think that's what it's called) to pick use as ringtone. So far, it works good, and I haven't had to worry about chopping it up. Of course, I'm using songs that are on my card and that I would normally have on the card.

As for movies, I found this link http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/articles/216/KB05419_f.SAL_Public.html . I'm not sure if it's clickable, but you can C&P. Anyway, I'm using a Mac, so I used Mactheripper and HandBrake to do the conversions. I keptthe .mp4 extension, and aac audio, but used the same bit rates and sizes as in the link. It works great, but, Pulp Fiction didn't take up the entire screen, probably because of the aspect ratio. It was also tough to fast forward/rewind to a certain part. It seems like it kind of jumps a few min. I'm not sure if it's jumping to the next chapter or just like 1/8 of the movie.

I haven't played around with the media functions that much. I had puchased a 2GB card about a month ago, waiting for this phone, and lost it, until about 5 min. ago. Now I have lots of room to play :p.

Quite frankly, I have tried Jive, IM+ and the free ones that come with the phone (I own IM+). I think Jive is the best, but IM+ isn't a far second. That being said, it's only because it let's you IM all in one client.

However, all the free ones (Gtalk, Yahoo, AIM) are pretty darn good too if you don't mind switching from APP to APP.

Does anyone know where to get an app that will do "Internet Radio" on the BB? Kinda like pockettunes for the treo finally incorporated that feature.

Even if there was an app that had you put in the IP addresses for the Radio is fien with me. I listen to .977 channels all the time and would like this for my BlackBerry.

Please help!

Empower Pro was the first software application that I bought for my Curve. It is a must have for your device! BB's are made to read/receive emails and this app is made to make your emails look like they should. Don't hesitate.

I was trying to decide between Empower Pro and BBSmart but net reviews seem to go more towards Empower Pro.

I strongly agree. I downloaded the trial version of Empower Pro OTA and bought the full version within ten minutes. It's a great program and integrates very tightly with the built in BB e-mail viewer.

After playing around with both Empower and BBSmart, I have to agree I like Empower Pro more as noted in previous posts. I loaded BBSmart onto my curve, and Empower onto my 8830. I noticed there is a "status" load time bar that pops up with every email with BBSmart, and found that annoying. Empower, I didnt seem to have any issues. One thing i did like about BBSmart was that it truncated HTML email links in a fashion more "clean" than Empower did.

Doing some search I found that "XM Radio" App will give access to Radio-Locator.com but you have to pay for XM to get there which sucks.I find it very sad BB gives us nothing!

How to Listen to the Radio from "eHow.com"

Step1 - Purchase XM Radio Mobile for your Blackberry by following the link provided in the Resources section. Although this is a paid service, XM offers the option to try the service free for 24 hours.

Step2 - Open the Internet browser that came with your phone to access Internet streaming radio websites.

Step3 - Follow the link provided in the Resources section to access free Internet streaming radio through Radio-Locator.

Step4 - Select a music format from the drop down menu and click "go."

Step5 - Choose a radio station from the provided list in the "Call Sign" column. A new window should pop open featuring the radio station's website. If you are using a pop-up blocker, alter your Internet browser options to allow pop-up windows.

Step6 - Look on the radio station home page for the words "Listen Live," "Listen Now" or some other similar text that links you to the radio station's streaming live feed.

Step7 - Plug a headset into your Blackberry to listen to your music while on the go or exercising. If you do not own a headset, follow the link in the Resources section to determine which headset works with your Blackberry model.

Now if I can find which thread mentioned that application that removes the protection from the iTunes protected songs....lol

I found the software & loaded it last night for the free trial....worked really easy so I purchased it this morning.

It removes the DRM protection quick & easy.

Also, this software works just as good as eWallet did for Palm & Windows...

Since using Gizmo for a little bit, I would have to say that it is pretty solid for a Free Program, but it's definitely not as aethetically pleasing as Jive nor IM+

I feel that some of the default settings are not as intuitive, and some of the button settings are awkward.

Other than that, it's a good app.

Here is another GREAT find. go to www.trapster.com . VERY NICE! This is also for more than just the Blackberry as well. Here is a snippet about the program from their website.

Your mobile phone alerts you as you approach police speed traps.
When you see a trap, report it by pressing a button on your phone, or calling a toll free number. Other user's phones will alert them as they approach the trap. Trapster® learns the credibility of traps based on how many users agree. It also learns the credibility of each user, over time.
Click here to learn more about how Trapster® works, or watch a video presentation. Will Trapster® work on my phone? Yes! Trapster® works on any mobile phone, and also other devices like navigation systems, laptop computers, and CarPCs! There are already many ways to use Trapster®, with even more being quickly added. Just sign up to get instructions and details!

An outstanding music player that will give iTunes a run for its money for BB users:

http://www.miutunes.com/

Go to the site and join the beta program which is free. I'm using it on my Curve with the iPhone stereo headset (with inline microphone) and the quality of the music is perfect and it pauses when I receive a phone call.

Here is a couple of screenshots:

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x234/crambert86/d0a9c401.png

and heres a video demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19wvOiIf0oM

As all you probably know by now, MiuTunes is out of beta and no longer is free. Which is definitely a shame since it is an outstanding music player for the BlackBerry Curve.

The normal price is $39.95 and they are offering a special right now for $29.95.

Beta testers can purchase it for $19.95 and they are running a special for beta testers to get it for $13.95 until June 18,2008.

So if you want it for the low $13.95 (I just bought it today), use:

this code: B4351ABA

You can get this at wls.live.com

As all you probably know by now, MiuTunes is out of beta and no longer is free. Which is definitely a shame since it is an outstanding music player for the BlackBerry Curve.

The normal price is $39.95 and they are offering a special right now for $29.95.

Beta testers can purchase it for $19.95 and they are running a special for beta testers to get it for $13.95 until June 18,2008.

So if you want it for the low $13.95 (I just bought it today), use:

this code: B4351ABA

at this link: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productId=224379

Enjoy. :tu:

Thanks for the Info! I downloaded the trial, and it is TOTALLY AWESOME! So I went ahead and purchased it and got it as well for the $13.95. GREAT FIND and DEAL!

Now if this program could incorporate Internet Radio, that would be a NICE improvement!

I also spent the $14 on MiuTunes. I really like it, and while I won't use it much, it was a really good deal. Thanks!

Wish I had paid attention to this - looks like it was a sweet deal! I sure hope they will put it on sale again!

I purchased the "Get it back" software by Convenience Software that is currently on the front page Crackberry.com. For a one time fee of $10 the software allows you to take control of your Blackberry and send it commands from any computer w/ access to the web should you lose it or have it stolen from you. It's a great concept and I've tested it out. Seems to work great and I think it's worth the $10 fee. Check out the details here:

I've had the app for about a week and a half now and for some reason it will no longer load up. It starts up with the splash screen then poops out on me. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still have the same result. Anyone else has this issue? And help would be greatly appreciated with this. I've been to their site to look for FAQ or support that may answer my issue with a resolution, but nothing. What does someone recommend?? Anyone else experience this?

AIM is included in Gizmo as well as Yahoo Messenger, MSN, etc. Great comprehensive app in my opinion.

Have you tried Gizmo?

not sure why you're pushing the gizmo.....jive is much better and cleaner looking....i've never paid for software in my life...but I may actually pay the $20 for this

Uhhhhhhhh.....I'm not pushing anything. I don't think that 2 posts made nearly 3 1/2 months ago constitutes "pushing". :icon_smil

Gizmo works great for me and guess what? It's FREE!!!

I don't use that kind of program nearly enough to spend a buck on it let alone 20 bucks.

So, back the truck up mister!!!!!

sure, i understand

however, from what i found, the messaging wasn't instant...there was a considerable lag from when the im was sent and then received...and vice versa....even worse was when i sent an IM, it was NEVER received

I've found this to be a problem on most instant messaging apps ranging from a treo to a blackberry

I was really impressed with jivetalk because there is no lag whatsover....i sign online at my laptop and tested this continuiously through various times of the day...there hasn't been a time yet where i've sent an IM and it wasn't received

How? It still uses the mobile youtube site...I'm looking for an app such as the YouTubePlay for WM phones.

There's really no need because what I've noticed is over the past 6 months, when I do a search on mobile youtube,it pulls up the same results as the desktop version. I know the WM app your referring to & I used to use it on my Touch. The only thing I miss is the option to download the videos AS WELL as watch them.

yes, except the video looks like crap on a QVGA screen since it is a smaller QCIF image (320x240 vs 176x144), when you use the mobile youtube site.

Okay, can someone help me out here before I CRAZY???

I had to reload some of my apps and I lost a Google Icon App where I could launch Google directly from my home screen. It looked like the regular Google multicolored icon except it was obviously rounded for the BB home screen. I am NOT talking about the "Google Mobile App" icon that is just a plain blue "G".

Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Does anyone have that icon?

Does anyone know where I can download it from? I can't remember where I originally downloaded it from.

SEE PICTURES BELOW.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!! :)

It's gone. They upgraded it with a new version with the blue "G" so unless someone saved the old files somewhere, you're going to have to use their latest version (which is 10x better than the old one).

^^thanks man I was looking for something like this the other day while at dinner. It's simple but it works.

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more. The most popular section is the message board where visitors can read and write messages, ask questions, and get advice about their cellular phone from other users.
