View Full Version : The "Official" Blackberry Curve 8330 Thread

Ok sorry for making this so late. In this thread please keep all talk to the phone itself. Don't post about when, why, how come, etc you didn't get the phone or how to get a deal on it or where to order or any of that.

Keep it to issues, tips, tricks, about the Curve. There are other threads regarding where you bought it and a thread showing off pictures of the phone itself.

I want to try and keep the Curve discussion as clean as possible since it is still a new section and not much posted here yet.

Thanks for all your help and understanding :)

No problem. I hope I can keep this Curve section clean and organized for everyone.

love the addition of yahoo messenger and google talk!

Yeah just reading the other threads and on other sites there is lots preloaded on the Sprint Curve that are nice additions. Not sure how much I will use all of it but knowing I have it on there already is nice.

This is my 1st BB and it seems slow to me as well. Just dialing a phone # right now, its taking it a few seconds to catch up the numbers while I'm dialing. Also, when I'm just wheeling around the Menu screens with the trackball, it is also delayed more than what I would think is normal. It is also semi-freezing when I try to use the Sprint TV. Anybody else having these things?

Painfully slow compared to 8830. I wonder if that is something they can fix down the road. I absolutely love this Blackberry, but it is SLOW.

I'm also on v4.3.0.127 (Platform 3.1.0.73 if that matters). Simply taking the battery out and putting it back in seems to have increased speed a bit. It's still not liking the navigator or tv though...got to keep messing with it

I'm on an old $70/month 800min Family F&F plan with 3 lines (the xtra line adds $9.95). Overage mins are .05 per minute up to the 1100th minute, .025 per minute from the 1300th to 2100th minute, and .05 per minute after that. 300 txt's on 2 lines for $5 each. 25% corp discount. Just added the $30 bb plan.

Anyone know how to get this Sprint TV working? Mine is asking for a "Key Store Password" (which I did create) but even when I type it in its then saying there are "IT Policy Restrictions". Any one come across this?

You should have them pay for the bes since your going to be a slave of them once your on bes...(They can see almost all your phones information)

Should consider staying on bis if your going to work for a company and use the mail redirector program to receive companys info.

Having the same issue as I did with my Pearl.

My ringtones are about 28 seconds long, and when I enable one of my customs, it only plays like 15 seconds, theres a 3 second pause, and it starts over until it goes to voicemail. I have tried shrinking the files, etc. No luck.....

Whats the deal!? My 8703e was the full 28 seconds and then voicemail....

This is IRRITATING!!!!!!!

Hmm, see in the back of my head I knew this was the possibility. Just wait till it's released and people are using it and we'll see how well it is, or not.

I'm in no rush, but I would like to buy my first Blackberry or PDA phone soon. I can't upgrade till June 1st so this is good, I can soak in for a couple weeks and see how people like their Curve and hear the cons. It's just like shopping for a car, you gotta research and take your time.

If in a few weeks people give the Curve a less than expected review, then maybe I'd be better off getting the 8830 or Pearl?

I've noticed some sluggishness, but as someone said before, fully charging the battery seemed to help. Sprint Navigation worked like a dream: set up my route and suggested I avoid an accident up ahead that was holding up traffic. I was pretty impressed with the traffic updates.

Also, I'm learning how gmail sync works with blackberry. Not crazy about it so far. I liked how the Sprint Email program marked messages as read and didn't add "Delivered:" to the subject line of sent messages. Just little things to get used to, I suppose.

Anyone else a little bummed about the plasticyness of the phone? I thought the 8830 felt more solid and had a little more weight to it. I guess the keys are just more noticeably plastic on the Curve because they're more spread out compared to the 8830. I'm still in love with this phone, but it feels a little cheaply made to me.

You need to adjust your email settings on the device so that confirm delivery, confirm read, and send read receipts are set at no. This should help with some of your email problems.

I must admit that yes, there is a little slowness which I am only noticing in my device when I go into the the communities and instant messaging folders, which I don't even have on my 8830. But its not even bothering me because there are so many other good things.

A few programs are more updated than what is on the 8830. The browser is much easier to use now that there is a mouse cursor.

The Curve is more lightweight than the 8830 but I am not disappointed with it at all. I like the smaller size and better looks. The 8830 feels like quality but also feels like a brick. The Curve is a step in the right direction. I don't understand why RIM is making the 9000 (Bold) even slightly bigger than the 8830, when the competition is making devices smaller. Small is in right now. The Curve is in, every carrier is selling them very well. I'm a college student and can tell you that Curves and Pearls blanket my campus.... although most students I know don't have the BIS pack so they cant BB MSG. :td:

I have been messing round with what the Curve offers compared to my 8830 on the same Simply Everything plan that I have. Lets just say I find myself watching tv for no reason at all because I have every channel they offer. Its funny that the Disney Channel is included with my phones tv service but not with my cable in my college apartment.

Ah, okay. So turning off confirm delivery should avoid that "delivered" stuff in the mailbox. Good. Thank you.

Also, I deleted the original gmail setup and did IMAP manually per gmail's instructions. This should also help.

The vibrator is definitely stronger than it was on the 8830; I'm used to it now, but it felt different at first. And it is still slower than the 8830, even after the battery has been fully charged. Also, it feels like it's not as well built as the 8830 is, and doesn't feel as solid.

All in all, I've wanted this phone for so long, but I think I'm over it already. I can't say I'm disappointed with it, but I'm definitely not as excited as I thought I would be. I'll keep playing with it, but there is a good chance that I'll be going back to my 8830 before my 30 days are up.

Here is my first post from my curve. After taking over 1.5 hours getting my phone activated it works. Sprint store could not get it activated because they had system problems. To make long story short blackberry supposrt help out a ton. Though my family unlimited text is not compatible with the $30 bb data plan so I had to redo all my text on all lines. O well no big deal works now and have gps, sprint tv, sprint music store. Will update more later. Though I was originally disappointed with the plastic feel of the phone. Not so much anymore though.

This is a repost:

For those that have received their Curve's, go to this link from Sprint and take the survey. At the end of the survey when it ask what would you like to be added to this phone, etc... mention that it would be great for them to enable Picture/Video mail. Might be one way to help them realize that they need to speed up the process of offering Picture/Video mail to us.

I partially agree with you. I don't feel it as fast as my 8830...I definately DISLIKE the way the trackball feels and moves compared to the smoothness of the 8830.

the battery cover feels flimzy..i ordered a seido 1500 extended battery that is just a tad thicker than the oem battery and i hear it wil lmake the battery cover fit more snug. I don't see myself returning to the 8830. I like the camera function and size of the curve compared to the world edition.

Then, I used the BB Desktop Manager "Restore" function to restore the .ipd file to my Sprint Curve 8330. I then went to https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=sprint and re-sent my service books and voila! Y! Messenger v2.0.46 now works like a champ.

I think the trackball needs to be broken in, and will get smoother overtime. For now, I had to bump the sensitivity to 80 and it feels close to my 8830, which is set at 70. I may have to do something about the back plate, too. Every time I start typing on the Curve, I can fell the back plate springing and it's pretty annoying. I may just shim it with a piece of felt or something and see if it helps. I do like the size of the Curve compared to 8830 - it's not really that much smaller when you look at them side-by-side, but it definitely feels smaller in my hands. But it's also a little thicker than 8830.

Not sure what's so common about the PAM issue, because mine worked right out of the box. I think the people that are having problems with PAM are the ones that are using Sprint's Connection Manager, so that may be the common problem. Dump the SCM, install the BDM along with whatever drivers may be needed (from the disk that came with the Curve) and you shouldn't have any problems setting up PAM with just the regular Windows connection manager.

Nope. The only reason you would use T9/Suretype is when you have more than one letter per key and you want it to predict what word you are trying to type.

Just got my Curve a couple hours ago. This is my first BB so im sorry if this seems like a dumb question. Is there a way to turn off the push email and check it manually and turn it back on when i need it? I know the main BB feature is the push email service but if im at work in front of my computer im already checking and replying from my desktop. I only really need the push service when im away from the office.

You can't manually check it though. It's either off or on. I'm pretty sure you'll get tired of turning it off and on all the time.

When you have a long form that you have to go down to the bottom of to press "I accept", how do you get down to the bottom without rolling the trackball forever? Is there a way to just skip down to the end?

Another quick way to get to the bottom is simply pressing "B" and you will automatically jump to the very bottom of the page.

For those that are looking for the perfect plans with their new Curve... check out the Simply Everything plans.

According to your signature thats a big jump. $40/month with all those perks and jumping to the SEP. Paying over double, but sounds like it was worth it.

from pinstack.com
I found these very useful after getting my Curve the other day.

First of all, in order to use these, you must go into Phone Options and turn OFF dialing from home screen.

Key shortcuts:

A or C = phonebook
S = search
F = phone profiles
W or B = browser
H = help
K = locks the keys
L = calendar
V = messages
M = messages folder
R = alarm
T = tasks
U = calculator
I = applications
O = options
P = phone

Some new additions thanks to the contributions in this thread:

T - Top of page (in browser)
B - Bottom of page (in browser)
Space - Page down (in browser)
ALT + Right Shift + Del = hard reset
D - Memo pad
U - Switch between hide/unhide in title bar (in browser)
ALT + NMLL = numbers instead of bars for signal strength

Another site to keep a watch on is http://www.YouMail.com which offers a more advanced voicemail system than what our carriers give us.

Right now I say keep a watch on it because for Sprint its not practical at the moment because unlike other carriers, Sprint charges $0.20/minute to forward calls and YouMail would be considered a forwarded call. It works by replacing your current Sprint voicemail system, but requires that you call into Sprint technical support to make the switch. It explains in details how to do the process and exactly what to say, but they warn you that with Sprint it will be a charge for each minute you're on your voicemail. For more info on this just check out the link to the site and register while it's free and wait it out till Sprint drops the forwarding charge if ever.

...Sprint needs to drop that forwarding charge crap like the other big wireless players and then make it easier to customize our accounts. Some companies allow you to change your voicemail account online without having to contact customer care.

The newer BlackBerry's seem to be programmed to allow activation by calling *2 for let's say a new subscriber who is activating service for the first time. For us current users who are just making a call to *2 for normal customer service it still displays the generic activation info on the screen although it does not affect anything. It did the same thing on my 8830 and now on the Curve. Don't pay any attention to it, regardless of if it says unsuccessful or successful. I was given this info by Sprint BlackBerry support last year, they tend to know what they're talking about so I didn't lose any sleep over it.

And as far as your free powervision is concerned, you should contact customer care and see why it was removed. The system may have automatically taken it off if it recognized that it is not compatible with our current device. Most reps will not want to re-add it though because they will claim that it is not compatible with BlackBerry devices, but in actuality it is as long as you use the Opera Mobile Browser. Keep in mind that many features of the phone (or at least what it was intended for) won't work without BIS or BES service added onto your plan.

i called retentions about my free vision. first guy said no problem i will take care of it. i look online and there's a 15 dollar vision pack. lol

called again and he said the same thing you said about it wont help with a blackberry anyway and then he put me on hold and said i will upgrade your 1000text to unlimited. i thought about it and i figured this power vision is going to be useless anyway other than for opera. so i took the unlimited text.

if aim, tv, and google maps won't work..then free vision aint worth it. only reason i wanted it back was just in case i go back to my old phone. and something bout losing free things...it hurts :)

i will add the bb plan in a couple of months when i cancel one of my lines.

But I thought Sprint stopped allowing stacked discounts. According to your sig you have a lot of them so how were you able to keep them and add the SE plan? Technically you are robbing Sprint for only $40 a month?!!!

Sprint migrated me over to this newer (stricter) billing system and kept my account the same which is the way it should be when you're in a contract. I called last month and upgraded to the Simply Everything plan and everything stayed the same on my account except for the plan. So technically I'm not robbing Sprint because they have given me these items and have went into contract with me.

And like I said earlier, yes Sprint no longer (keywords: no longer) allow users to stack discounts and credits. I was already receiving the items I have and will continue to do so until they expire. Once they expire thats a whole new ball game. When I was migrated into Ensemble they could have removed the discounts then and still can do so now.

This and many other issues about discounts, credits, and Ensemble are discussed in the Tips & Tricks section of SU. Over the years of being on SU I have gained knowledge and insight into perfecting my plan. The longer you're on here you'll find valuable information that will help you lower the overall rate of your plan as well. Loyalty has its rewards. :tu:

Congrats on receiving the unlimited text and I will try to help you to the best of my ability but eve I don't know that much when it comes to using a BB without BIS or BES.

I know that some internet features do not work without BIS or BES but I don't know about Sprint TV, Google Maps, and instant messaging programs (i.e. AIM). You'll have to attempt this and let us know or many other users on the board I'm sure can answer your questions regarding this. I only know that the Browser and BlackBerry Messenger won't work. Some programs utilize BIS or TCP for connecting to the internet, so it's a possibility that you can switch a specific program to use TCP in its options. I don't know if this will work but you can attempt it.

I agree with you on how it feels to lose something free. I lost free unlimited incoming minutes when I switched from my SERO plan to my Simply Everything 900 plan. But I figured I wanted more features on my plan than more minutes since I don't talk that much on my phone. So it's almost like you have to decide what works best for you and just go with it. When you decide to go with a BB it's like you're making a choice to change your plan and you have to keep that in mind because if you ever want to go back to a regular pda or phone usually it requires switching back to a different plan and/or add-on pack. Even I will have to deal with this on my Simply Everything plan. They have different Everything plans for different devices and currently mine says Simply Everything BKB which means just for BlackBerry devices. So if I want to go with lets say a Palm or HTC phone I will need to switch from the Everything BKB to just a regular Everything plan.

Regarding the bluetooth of the contacts from your M1 to your Curve I would assume it wouldn't work. But don't quote me on that. I would honestly say your best bet is to have a Sprint retail location transfer the numbers for you. If you can't do that, try to transfer them to your PC/Mac and then transfer them to your Curve from there.

The M1 may use a proprietary contact list (address book) system that doesn't work with that of the Curve. I can bluetooth contacts to certain phones using my 830 and Curve but I've never tried on an M1.

.....done, finally!

then an hour later i get an email saying unlimited texting was added and my vision is gone as expected. oh well.

oh ya about the bluetooth.

recently i had copied my contacts from my m1 to my gf's centro and synced it with palm desktop and exported them as a vcard.

palm exports it as 1 file for all contacts. well outlook needs a seperate vcard for each contact..so i figured that was going to take a month to export each contact to vcard.

then i went to yahoo address book and voila it imported my palm vcard. so then i used the blackberry desktop manager to sync with yahoo address book and i am good to go.

Hey guys, I've got to say either I'm missing something or the texting is pretty confusing on this phone. I can go to messages from the main screen and see all my texts (incoming and outgoing) in chornological order. It just is hard to read them since they are not in a thread format. I can respond to one of the incoming and it makes it a thread, but if I respond to a separate incoming from the same person, it makes another thread.

I'm coming for a 755p which was absolutely amazing with the threaded texts. Will someone please tell me that I'm missing something.

As long as your plan states that PowerVision is listed as a feature on your plan on Sprint.com then you should not be getting charged for it. With this new merger and other things going on at Sprint, a lot of times I find the data on the usage analyzer to be incorrect and/or just completely messed up. I haven't been able to view my data usage because the online system thought that I made a change to my plan.... I haven't touched my plan since the beginning of April.. :thought:

I wouldn't call in about it, just wait till your next bill arrives and everything should work itself out. Now if you see that there are numerous charges for data usage then you call in and have them correct it and treat you special. :lol:

Like Nascar said, 8 GB for now. Usually when larger cards (i.e. 12 GB, 16 GB) come out they are supported as well unless they are breaking the universal standard. But even if thats the case RIM will probably update the firmware or OS to accept the larger cards.

Alright Guys, I was finally able to get my data fixed on Friday. I have a few questions.

1) how can i change the bb settings so it doesn't give me 2 copies of sent items. one with check mark and the other like an email envelope. Also my gmail account is showing delivered emails? Is that normal?

2) how do i change settings so emails do not show in the messages. Since i have 2 accounts setup for emails all of that shows under text messages. I would like it so they are separate.

3) emoticons? Is there such a thing on bb? I got my wife a samsung m520 and she sends me these smiley faces that do not properly show.

4) over the weekend my phone got stuck. Dunno what happened but i had to power cycle this thing by taking out the battery. And also had couple of dropped calls. It seems that ever since sprint enabled the data plan the signal strength on this phone isn't as good.

5) sorry I just need help. I went to sprint to have my contacts transferred over. All the contacts were transferred. But i had some pictures on my old sanyo 8300 phone which got replaced with this bb. which sprint said they couldn't transfer. Any thoughts on how i can get them to transfer.

6) I would like to move the icons around on the desktop.

Thanks in advance.

Helacha- you can move the icons but clicking on the icon you would like to move. Click the applications button (button to the left of the track ball) and and click on move. You will see the icon turn to a sqaure and you can move it where ever on the screen or the top row which is your "top five". Your "top five" will show to the left of your screen if you do not have the "all applications" open.

How do you mean 2 copies? You actually have a "mass" mailbox where e-mails from all your accounts are dumped plus the individual boxes. If that is the issue, I'd sugges maybegetting rid of the mass mailbox

2) how do i change settings so emails do not show in the messages. Since i have 2 accounts setup for emails all of that shows under text messages. I would like it so they are separate.

I have no idea LOL

3) emoticons? Is there such a thing on bb? I got my wife a samsung m520 and she sends me these smiley faces that do not properly show.

You actually only have them for the BB messenger service

4) over the weekend my phone got stuck. Dunno what happened but i had to power cycle this thing by taking out the battery. And also had couple of dropped calls. It seems that ever since sprint enabled the data plan the signal strength on this phone isn't as good.

I don't know on that one seems kinda strange to me

upload them to your picturemail account and download them to your phone. The only problem is once you go to the blackberry, the link for PM is removed reom you online account. You need to go to http://www.pictures.sprintpcs.com and log in

6) I would like to move the icons around on the desktop.

You can do this by highlighting the icon you want to move, hitting the BB menu button, and select move and it will allow you to move it where you wnat it

Does any one have a problem with auto screen dimming ? Mine does not tho seem to shut off no matter where I set the option on or off it still dims

Ditto for me. I am surprised more people aren't complaining about/reporting this. It is very frustrating.

Mt friend's Sprint BB Curve however seems to work fine...in other words it makes a difference whether he has it set to "on" or "off".

Why the difference???

Anyone, anyone?????

Sorry if there is an answer somewhere for this, I looked but didn't see it...

I created a few new folders (Messages to follow-up on, etc) for messages. How do I move the messages to various folders other than just the SAVED MESSAGES one?

Also, is there a way to create a separate ringtone for voice mail and a separate tone for text messages? I have them separated in terms of listing the messages, but I can't seem to find a way to make the alerts distinctive. I have to actually check it to see which it is...

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Go to "Profiles", scroll down to "advanced", select the profile you want to edit, press the blackberry menu button, select "Edit", and you will see the list of items to change. From there, you can edit the options for each item on the list (phone, voice mail, SMS, email for each account, etc.).

There IS a setting for it...thats my point. I don't have a problem with the feature either, but even when I choose "no" to turn the feature off, it still does the auto dim thing. I just think if you are given an option to turn a feature "on" or "off", the feature should work how you have it set...I know that's asking a lot....:irked:

Thanks Aleko! For some reason, I still can't figure out the voicemail part. Once I get into the advanced section,it doesn't say voicemail. Is it the Level 1 message option or the "messenger-new message" option? I've changed the PHONE option so that I have a ringer for when the phone ringers, but the voicemail part is really tripping me up for some reason.

Unfortunately there is no way to separate. the voicemail will ring as whatever you choose your SMS option to ring as. The reason for this is because voicemail falls under a sms message to your phone, and that's how you get notified.

For simply unlocking the keyboard, no. But if you set the BB to require a password to use it, then you can make the password whatever keys you want to for unlocking. Mine locks as soon as it goes in a holster or about 30 seconds of non-use if I'm not using an application (i.e.-the phone is sitting on my desk and is on the Home screen.)

You can't do it with the End button AFAIK, but if you press the mute button on the top of the phone, it will go into the same standby mode (no screen on) as if it were holstered. Calls, e-mails, texts, and other alerts still go through even when on "Standby".

No. The password will unlock the keyboard also.

When you have the keyboard locked, it basically makes sure the phone doesn't do anything accidentally. As in dial a number while it's in your pocket. But anyone can pick up the phone and follow the on screen instructions to unlock the keyboard and use your phone.

If you set a password, the phone will lock (depending on how you have it set) and no one can use the phone unless they first punch in the password. In order to use the BB again, you will have to enter a password (you set what the password is). So basically, if you are using a password, when you go to use the BB, it will ask for the password, then you are good to go.

Btw, to set the password, go to Options>Security Settings>General Options. You need to "Enable" the password. It will then prompt you to set a password. Once done, unlocking the keyboard (aka a more secure way of accessing your BB) will be as simple as typing in your password.

As a tip...setting the password to some PITA phrase, is not a lot of fun. Typing out some long azz password sucks everytime you want to access the BB. Mine is "qaqa". Basically two quick swipes with my left thumb on the two left keys. And honestly, no one is gonna guess my password.

When typing up an email address, just use your space bar for both "@" and ".". In other words, if the address you're typing in is xxx@yyy.com, you type in xxx "space" yyy "space" com.

I have a couple of questions - I did a search but maybe didn't use the right words so I'm sorry if this is a repetitive question. I sent an email yesterday with my Curve and instead of a checkmark or an X for not sent, I got a checkmark with the black letter "D" over it. Does anyone know what that means?

Also, is there a short cut to advance your curser an entire word at a time (or entire paragraph)? Like the Ctrl-Arrow (sideways for words and up/down for paragraphs) feature on a regular computer keyboard?

Maybe there's a website full of shortcuts?? I am a shortcut queen on the keyboard and want to find as many as possible on the curve :). I know a few already. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got my curve recently and I'm already completely ADDICTED!! It's my first PDA :). I'm in love...

I can't seem to get Sprint Radio to work at all. Any input? It just continually tells me that it cannot open that folder and to try again later. I try again later and still the samething. It's been like this for SEVERAL months on my Curve. I thought maybe it was a known issue or something until I went into a sprint store yestarday and played Sprint Radio on a curve and a regular flip phone. And they both worked. I tried my phone again and still didn't work.

I hold the curve in my hands and have enjoyed it for the two days that I've had it...but now I think to myself...*shrugging my shoulders* it does'nt drive me crazy...i find myself reading the att posts over at blackberryforums about the BOLD...If 3g really is as fast as EVDO...I might jump ship. :X

***? 3g IS evdo... and the 8330 has both so what are you really saying?

Have you upgraded your OS by any chance? If you have upgraded to 4.5 using a beta or other vendor's OS, Sprint Radio will not work.

Hello everyone :wavey:

I just recently switched from T-Mobile to Sprint, and bought the Curve.

I have some questions, hopefully you guys can help me.

The Blackberry User Tools CD that came with the phone will not load up on my Macbook. Is there any way around this?

Also, my OS version is 4.3. How can I get the latest update? Do I need the User Tools CD to do this?

Thanks.

I have a question, how do i upload the pics from my blackberry. you know how we have the www.pictures.sprintpcs.com?
Also how does picture mail work, do we have to send them as an email and if so do you guys know the addresses for the other phone carries. For instance if I want to send to my sister who is on at&t do you know what comes after her number for her to recieve it? I hope that made sense!

I have a couple of questions - I did a search but maybe didn't use the right words so I'm sorry if this is a repetitive question. I sent an email yesterday with my Curve and instead of a checkmark or an X for not sent, I got a checkmark with the black letter "D" over it. Does anyone know what that means?

um... the "D" means "Delivered" or sometimes you will see and "S" for "Sent" or "R" for "Received"...

Hope that helps!

So I just got my curve yesterday, I was moving things around on my homescreen when all the sudden 'device options' disappeared. Now I did not hide it, I know this, cause I tried show all etc... Bottom line is : its gone. M.IA. And I wanna get it back????? I tried browsing 'switch applications' and still no luck. So is it possible to delete the device options ??? Surely not cause its not a downloaded application. Please brilliant people of sprintusers help me out as you always have in the past. Someone try hitting the menu key on device options and see if delete is even there. Thx yah'll!
