View Full Version : Something to Consider: Get Curve Now or Wait for 9000?

So from reading over on Crackberry.com about the hype of the yet to be released 9000, I started thinking...

I have yet to be a BB user for the first time. I am eligible for $75 off upgrade come June 1st. Only 1 year into my 2 year contract. I am seriously considering getting the Curve sometime in June or soon after.

But, after seeing the hype with the 9000 and the guy that bought one on Crackberry.com, it seems to already be the succeeding hype to the Curve.

So.... should I go ahead and get the Curve this year or wait for the 9000? We have no idea when the 9000 will be released, could be as early as this fall or winter, or maybe not till 2009? I'm sure it's probably in testing right now and won't be released anytime soon. So is it worth waiting for or should I just go ahead and have the Curve be my first BB?!

Oh and just FYI, it doesn't really matter to me when I upgrade, I can afford it now cause I would use my part of my tax stimulus check to get the Curve. Come next year I'll have extra income to spend when I pay my car off so this time next year I could afford to buy a phone, if the 9000 where not to come out till a year from now.

so far the 9000 is only going to be released on gsm. and it to a year for the curve to be on a cdma network so do you really want to wait that long?

Hmm, great point. So the 9000 won't be released on Sprint till after it's on GSM with AT&T first? Okay. Yeah I probably wouldn't want to wait. Might just go for the curve now then. :)

Honestly, Blackberries on CDMA are kinda of a wait and see thing... It generally takes forever for them to be released. Truly said:td:

I'm getting the curve and if and when the 9000 is released on CDMA or better yet if or when Sprint releases it I then can get the 9000.

While it's obviously a matter of personal choice, what is most appealing about the 9000 for you? From posted pics, it doesn't appear to be much thinner than the Curve (if at all), and goes back to the 88XX style keyboard, albeit with slightly raised keys. The improvements seem to mainly be the larger display and of course, OS 4.6. Okay, I just re-read Kevin's updated review and, yes the 9000 is packed with awesome features. How many (if any ) of those will be added w/ OS 4.5 update for Curve, etc. is anyone's guess. But,given Sprint's recent track record with BB launches,I would be suprised if they released it before 2010. You could sign a 2yr contract and be out of it before they acually had it for sale.

I've owned the AT&T Curve (original 8300) and really liked it. So rather than wait for a device that you haven't seen or used yet, you can try out the Curve at a store, figure out if it's going to meet your needs, then purchase it. I agree with other posters, too, that the 9000 is so far off for VZW and Sprint, that unless you're infinitely patient, will be kind of rough to get.

Have to believe that Sprint will not be anxious to release the Bold anytime soon after all this work to get the Curve out.

Is the name "Bold" for sure? Everything I read suggests it's only rumor.

Nah, it's not for sure. Just what some folks are calling it. We'll know for sure when the press release comes out very shortly.

Waiting for phones never pays off, you end up spending life doing just that, WAITING.
I would go ahead and get the phone you want and then when a new one works out call sprint and tell them you are gonna jump ship since you want that new phone but they wont give you new customer price.

The math works in your favor. The ETF is $200, they are gonna charge you about that much extra for the phone that they are selling to new customers way cheaper.

The competitors have it just as cheap, they can't hold your number hostage. They will usually sell you the phone for 2 year price as long as you make a case they are gonna lose a customer.

Thanks everyone... I have to agree with you all. I'll just go ahead and get the Curve. :) Not worth sitting around wondering when the 9000 will come out, it's obvious it's fresh off the press and in testing only. I'll make the Curve my first BB and be happy! :) Can't wait for June!

While we're all celebrating getting our Curves today, the rest of the world is celebrating the release of the Bold (BB 9000) that was just announced this morning. It's funny and sad at the same time, but I guess it's symbolic of CDMA carriers in general and Sprint in particular when it comes to BlackBerry devices. Of course AT&T will be the only carrier to offer the Bold, at first anyways.

Yeah everyone on here is saying it won't be released to CDMA carriers for a long time so I don't need to think about waiting, I'm getting the Curve!

Nice to be a year late on technology.

I bet we don't see the 9000 for quite some time at Sprint. At&t is getting it first and they had the Curve for a long time before Sprint. It sucks they have the iPhone too.

The rule of thumb I follow with technology typically is buy the best you can get that fits your needs & budget at the time you need it. Something better is always down the road, especially with technology. Why let that given fact hamper your decision so much?

Most of the people getting the Curve in my opinion don't need a PDA phone in the first place. If they want to wait for a more expensive toy, then all the power to them. But those who need the phone will pounce on the opportunity when they need it.

You said it the best! :tu: And this is why I will just go ahead and get the Curve with no regrets. I need a PDA phone so I can be more productive in my life and job, and also having e-mail, IM and web right on my hip will be so valuable so I concur with what you said. Some buy the BB's just to have the most up to date Blackberry. No offense to anyone, but to those who have the 8830 and are jumping over to the Curve, why? The 8830 isn't that old, it practically just came out. So yeah, some just pay full price for whatever reason to have the lastest device.

I still have never owned a PDA phone and actually could really use it in daily life.

If you got it why not spend it, right?

Nope. Investing and saving are options too.

AT&T seems to be getting all these cool phones. How is their network compared to Sprint's?

IMHO, lousy. More dropped calls, more broken up. We could (and have) debate(d) this forever...but to me, CDMA is a better technology.

In New England Verizon is the best coverage but their phones and plans are pricey. I kinda want an iPhone though as I'm a Mac user.

Me too. Awaiting with baited breath, the 3G iPhone. I'll only get one if they fix the LOUSY volume on the headset and speaker though.

I'm stuck in a contract with Sprint unfortunately or I would switch when the 3G iPhone comes out.

I fully agree....my sister has one of my old pda's & it's because she text's more than she talks....not that she needs the business features!!

If you got it why not spend it, right?

But you said it best....If you've got it....then why not spend it! Because I certainly didn't need all the phones I have purchased over the years, but I wanted it....had the money, so I bought it.

The 9000 looks great on the site, who knows....I doubt I'll change....I'm stalking the UPS website trying to see when my Curve will arrive....I think I will enjoy this toy for awhile!

To me the iPhone is overrated. Relying on a touch screen for everything is scary to me. Not having a keypad or keyboard of any kind turns me off. There are so many things that turn me off about the iPhone so maybe I'm the minority.

Have you played with an iPhone? The touch screen is amazing. Also if you have a Mac it syncs way easier than anything else.

No I have not, saw one in person once or twice but never held or played with it. Seeing it in action on TV and internet was enough, I know that sounds lame and bitter but with some things I can come to my own conclusions without. Not saying if I ever do get to try one out via a friend or something that I wouldn't be impressed with anything about the phone. Just not attracted to it in general.

I hear ya. Everyone is different. I didn't want one until I played with one and got a Macbook.

Yeah I guess I should mention I'm not a fan of Mac either so that would help explain better. Never owned a Mac but used them a lot in high school. Never understood them.
