View Full Version : Sanyo PRO-700 Hands On Review / Pictures

So I had my rep @ premier services order me the new Sanyo PRO-700 (SKU: PRO700KIT) which was not available in my market but she was able to order it anyway.

(FYI don't ask me how to activate one of these guys.)

Bluetooth included, works great with my Jawbone. QCHAT is enabled, and it's indistinguishable from my ic602 and ic902 that I have working right alongside my PRO700. GPS is included in the form of Sprint Navigation. The PRO700 includes NMEA Output which can be set through USB or Bluetooth. The phone feels very solid, a Sanyo usual. I like the outer display, high contract and clearly readable, even outdoors.

The PRO700 doesn't have a memory card slot, but it does include 32MB of built-in storage, so even with all my custom ringers I don't think I'll run out of space.

I don't know if any other Sanyo's come with a Micro-USB connector yet, but this one does.

Included accessories: Clip on holster and a Micro-USB Charger. Thats it.

Something I think is an AWESOME addition, PRL updates are now available VIA MENU OPTION! RIGHT NEXT TO UPDATE FIRMWARE. No more calling *2 or manually updating your PRL files!!

Web browswer is the standard ACCESS NetFront, version 3.4.

No Camera...but that doesnt really matter, since this is my Direct Connect only phone.

I'm hoping it is like the wireless backup that most of the newer Sprint phones have. If it is I also hope that its compatible with the wireless back up. I would hate to have to re enter 300 contacts.

one question i have is how is the battery life compared to the 7050/m1/ready link phones when you have the ready link turned on?
I know on the spec sheet it claimed to have 5 hrs of talk time. That would be awesome.

These new phones use new over the air programming. If the phone is turned on at any time before you call (from another phone) to activate them, it will delay activation by 4 hours!!!. Do not turn on at all!!

Theres no DISABLE-NAI option in this phone, so I can't test it without the plan. I'll have the added tomorrow morning. BTW it does support DUN over BT so i'll assume it does since It tries to dial in and then i get a vision username error since theres no PAM on the plan.

The phone looks hot. Too bad it's not more full featured. You can turn your phone on and then press END to stop the OTA programming and then just do it manually. That's what I do. I don't like the OTA programming. Seems to always have a hiccup.

No memory card slot & no camera?

My faith in Sanyo is waning. I've already been waiting since the beginning of the year for a replacement for my 7500. Now its starting to look like there will not be one, let alone one for my M1. Sounds like the Pro-800 isn't even happening now.

My over 10 yr loyalty to Sprint has been in part to the Sanyo phones. The only other phone that even remotely has come close to catching my interest was the Mogul. My problem with that one was that its a PDA first, a phone 2nd. I want a phone first.

I'm tired of rumors and quickly losing patience. Sprint needs to give us some information on the upcoming phones, or they're going to start losing long time customers.

It looks pretty much the same. From the users manual...
"
All your contacts and groups, including Team DC groups,
can be added and edited online using the Sprint Mobile Sync
service. With Sprint Mobile Sync you can:
v Add and edit contacts and groups. Use your computer to
easily add, edit, and manage contacts and groups
and set up and manage Team DC groups.
v Synchronize and back up your contacts.Save all the
contacts information from your phone in a secure location
and automatically synchronize new information from the
computer to the phone and from the phone to the
computer.
v Transfer contacts to a new phone. When you activate a
new phone, your existing contacts information is sent to
the phone upon activation.
v Erase contacts information from a lostdevice. If your
phone is lost or stolen, Sprint Mobile Sync can remotely
remove all the contacts information. You can then send
the information to your replacement phone.
v Import and export contacts with online address books.
Import or export contacts information from or to your
Outlook or other compatible database."

If it had a camera and/or any or all of the other bells & whistles found on the MM phones I wouldn't be interested in the least. I'm interested in just what I have in the 7050, a tough reliable telephone with great reception + data service. And a little sexier looking. :p

Thanks Norwester, now the only question in my mind is will it sync with or take the place of the wireless backup. I love that feature even though its 2 bucks (money well spent though, beats typing in 300 or more contacts again)

I do wish the 700 had a camera, even if it were vga just to send pics to some friends from time to time. I may have to learn to live without one for awhile though.

Deval
05-18-2008, 10:16 AM
I think once you activate the device, mobile sync will take the place of wireless backup, since I believe there is no extra charge for the service, unlike wireless backup which is $2 a month.

Well that's the thing about rumors...you can choose to get caught up in all the hype.

Sprint giving out information about upcoming devices would be worse that shooting themselves in the foot. The competition reads this site, and why would Sprint want to tell the world what they are planning?

Based on what I have seen, it looks like Sanyo, Samsung, and LG focused on these qchat devices, in order to hit the market. Now that they are launching soon, I think it will free up resources to again create cool normal phones.

Plus, your average NDC user has no need for a camera or memory card slot.

Inwards is good, keep from scratching up the front diplay. A qcp ringer would damn near be a deal breaker for me though, that's the only reason I got rid of my 6600 I could not hear the qcp ringers and if you increase thier volume well you know how bad they sound.

Just out of curiosity what charger do these new sanyo phones take??? (plz 2 be mini usb)

I personally think that with the changes to the billing system, you can finally have mixed devices (iDEN and CDMA) on the same account.

They already have it where you can have both types of devices on the same account. I am not sure about shared minute plans, but I know you can have both on the same bill and its pretty simple. I have had my BB8830 and nextel i850 on the same account for at least 5 months now.

My main gripe with the nextel line is that nextel subscribers have been dropping like flies over the past year. I used to have about 25 people I talked to regularly on there now I am down to like two. Everyone has jumped ship since the merger and the lack of new phones, etc. :irked:

Usually when my nextel dies days will go by before I even charge it and no one notices lol.

I still say Nextel is the best thing ever for when you are driving or in the middle of doing something and want your head free. My mom gets pissed she cant never get ahold of me since she dropped her nextel but I don't answer the damn phone when I am not working I will always answer my radio.

Hey everyone I'm new to SU. I do post on HOFO under the name JStatus330. Anyways I wanted to post this here...

I got the Sanyo Pro 700 around 4pm today. One of my local stores had the Pro 700 and the Pro 200, but no other QCHATS. Since they did not have the others I will not comment on them.

For starters they didn't have the phones out on display yet and I was the first person to ask about them. They got them out of the box and let me play with them for a while. The Pro 700 is much smaller than I thought it would be. It has a nice rubber feel to it and I like knowing it meets military specs. It has a nice outside screen and great speaker phone. The charging port is great. Unlike Samsung phones, the flap that covers the port is easily moved out of the way when you want to charge. It doesn't feel like it will break off after repeated use. I like how the back of the phone locks the battery into place, so it feels tight and secure.

The screen on the inside is smaller than I prefer, but it looks gorgeous. I love the choices of preloaded displays and ringers. They give you many options for time/date display. It comes with several games. It has many tools like calender, world clock, alarm clock, stop watch, and voice memo. The keypad lights up a bright blue, very nice. The keypad feels of light rubber and they are raised above the surface for easy dialing. The worst part about the keypad is the ok button is sort of small, but it's not a big issue.

You can update your DC, update your profile, and I've seen pictures of PRL update but I actually do not see it on the final product. If there is a PRL update option I'd like to know where it is. I have not been able to test out of the DC because for some odd reason it says users are not available.

I spend over an hour at the Sprint store trying to get this phone and a new plan. Basically they couldn't add the phone onto the system unless I got one of the new plans. Then they had trouble getting the programming codes. The people they called had no clue what to do (probably cause it's new product and plans).

My only complaints so far is that after updating everything on the phone, I can't DC, and my wife's text are not coming in. I have sent her text, but I'm not getting hers. I'm gonna call Sprint and find out if something is messed up, probably is considering I waited over an hour to get the thing programmed.

**UPDATES** Texting works fine now. DC still does not work. I just got off the phone with Sprint. I spent 20 mins on hold, and the lady told me reason why my DC is not working is because there is a nationwide DC outage. She told me the outage number was 2187674, whatever that number means I have no clue. Anyways, would anyone care to comment on this "outage"? She told me to simply power my phone on and off several times a day until DC starts to work again.

She told me to simply power my phone on and off several times a day until DC starts to work again.

any one know what format the ringers need to be in???

I tried mp3 no good
tried qcp no good
tried mp4 no good
tried wav no good

QCP workin on my 700

One thing I'm not too happy about is that the Nascar app does not work on the 700 but it is listed to work on the 200. What the heck???

Thanks for the info about updating the PRL. I would have never noticed it. Now my wife's Nextel iDEN will not PTT. Her phone says "service restricted". My Pro 700 says "currently not reachable via Direct Connect". Is anyone else having PTT problems like Sprint said about the "outage". I thought Sprint touted their PTT reliability?

hay what format did you use?

I formated the ring to .wav 8000 mono 8bit (or what ever the nextel settings were)
then changed it to .qcp
loaded it to the phone and it would not play?

how did you do it????

I paid for the membership (7 bucks, cheap) but I make my own ringers.

On another subject I was surfin the web on my phone and was interrupted by a DC call, when the call was over right back to internet. Thought that was cool.

You know what's cool? If you are on 1 NDC call, and someone tries to alert you, you get a missed-NDC call notification.

I am a moto/iden person all the way but i wanted to see what all the hype was about, and you know sofar it was well worth turning my back on mot/iden
it was a shame my free incomming 300 was not able to carry over to the q-chat phones

I went to get my PRO-700. I liked the size and feel of it of it but I chose not to upgrade.

The location of the "back" button is unfortunate as it is to the center and right of the navigation buttons -- exactly where you'd expect the "next" button if there was one.

Ultimately what changed my mind is that Sprint charges and $18 upgrade fee. :(

I still don't understand why my QCHAT won't work and why my wifes Nextel doesn't work now. I don't buy the "nationwide outage" since apparently other peoples Nextels and QCHATs are working fine. ***!?

I am thinking about picking up the phone but have been holding off to see if any one has any problems with the qchat setup. I ran out and bought two IC902 and have nothing put problems with them. Mainly they loss d/c so when people try to call me they can't get though or I can't call out. So I thought about getting this phone but I don't want to get stuck with a phone with problems and on top of that Sprint is no help. I have talked to the tech people about the problems and they say the phone has problems but we can't do anything for you unless you sign up for two more years. So if any of you have bought this phone could you please let me know the following:
How loud is the ringers and speaker? I am around a lot of load stuff all day so the loader the better?
D/C coverage compared to other Nextel phone?

Aloha

I have thought about leaving Sprint/Nextel but since I am a truck driver a lot of my customers use d/c to call me and even on the job site everyone uses them so they seem to have the market cornered.

If you have a family plan with a QCHAT phone you will get charged $10 for DC. For some stupid reason Sprint decided to have individual plans that include DC, but family plans do not include DC. I can't figure that one out. You will also have to upgrade your plan to one of the new plans.

Deanwoof. Do you know if the SERO plan with my Mogul currently connected, will I get charged for DC/QChat if I connect my LX400 by LG on the current SERO plan? Or is DC feature included?

This is the newest copy of the SERO_details.pdf I've been able to find, and it is a bit out of date (published before Sprint DC).

http://tijil.org/SERO_details.jpg

Notice that it included Ready-Link service for handsets capable of it, so when the newer chart is issued it might include DC - but until i see something that actually says that, I don't know.

Yea it does but that is the Nextel SERO plans. I hope DC on SERO plans for these new QChat phones is free.

I went into the Sprint store Thursday and asked about the PRO-700 and for some reason the lady told me that they are not for sale until Friday but she could bring one out for me to look at. Online it has been showing the qchat phones for sale by my zip code since Sunday. The rep was nice compared to the ones I have talked to. She did not seem to know a lot of details about the phone it self and I was sharing some of the cool things I learned on here and on Sprint's web site. F.Y.I Sanyo web site is showing off the phones but they list an extend battery for sale but Sprint does not.

I am seriously considering the pro-700. The rep told me I can switch to Nextel from sprint and keep my incoming 300, but I am wondering how I can add PTT. I was so gung -ho about the instinct, but this phone looks like it rocks.

Some education of reps needs to go on, more than one of them told me it was just sprint to sprint. Never had DC tried to figure out the DC #, gave up called my brother and chirped him but the reps were telling me it wouldn't work.

well most sprint reps wold not know there ass from there face if you tore them off and put them in front of them.

They are told one thing at some centers and somthing diffrent at others.

the q-chat/DIRECTCONNECT> phones can DC between networks, may not sound all that hot over the speaker but it works none the less.
I have found some bug's and sent them on to the focus group via a rep in the office that ran these phones in the test stage and are in charge of over seeing the way these phones act in the wild.

Nothing diffrent from nextel/iden just the user can not be reached by direct connect errors when you just talket to this person 2 seconds ago. If you want these phones just remember there new and its just nextel in a cdma shell so just let the errors slide and its as if your on iden all over again
