View Full Version : You Can Swap Phones Online At Will

For anyone wanting to switch phones without having to deal with C.S. I believe this (www.sprint.com/activate (http://www4.sprint.com/WLSApp/esnswap/do/Welcome)) is the way to go about it. Years ago this was a link on the Sprint home page. Not a link on the home page anymore, but nevertheless I'm glad they brought it back.

Yes, that was put up after the migration to the new billing system. Basically as long as you are on the new system, you can do ESN swaps online.

While said jokingly, that's a valid question. Do they still charge the activation fee if you do it yourself?

PS: Activation fee for a new phone is a joke anyway.

they better not charge. if that's the case you may as well call them to since you are going to be charged.

For the activation fee.. you get charged 18 dollars you can always call up sprint and see if they can have that removed for you.. most of the time they can have that charge removed for you.

any idea what the turn around/ processing time is on the swap?

i have a my old & busted samsung a560 and my new hotness samsung i325 if i'm gonna be going out or hiking or something for the weekend could i swap it use it the weekend, then swap back when class and work began for the week?

assuming the swap is pretty instantaneous (even if a couple hrs to take effect would be useful) and assuming it doesn't incur any charges...

appreciate any insight..

okay, I hope I can shed a little insight on this as I have done many online swaps in the past month.

I wasn't ever charged to do it.
As soon as the information was in Sprint's system and I programmed the new phone to work with my phone number it was functioning properly. (matter of minutes)

No.

Once you enter the esn number the msl will be under the programming instructions. I've used the online swap at least 20 times in the past month or so.

it shouldn't be a problem....

Log into Sprint.com and as long as you're on the new billing system you should see a link next to your current phone to "upgrade/activate a phone"
Click that and follow the "on screen" instructions
The process takes NO MORE than 5 minutes to complete

it gives you an error and tells you to chat or call

same if you try to activate a BB on a non BB plan or try to replace a BB /w BB plan with a PV phone.

I just changed from a vision phone to a power vision phone on my sister in laws account. She broke her phone, so I gave her my old a900m but the reps would not activate it without changing her plan. So she got my really old phone. She used that for about 4 months. She is on the 1250 minute sero plan. So when I read about the online activation, I tried it. It did not give me any issues at all. I did not have to chat or anything.

Yeah, pretty much. And if both phones have your MSID and MDN programmed into them, you don't even need to go into the programming menu. Just switch off one phone and switch on the other.

If I was calling customer care to activate a phone, it would be good practice to actually program the device while still on the phone.

I'm not sure I understand your point.

I did program the devices while on the phone. I was given the wrong MSL for the 3 phones. I didn't know that the phones were improperly programmed until 2 hours later when I tried to place a call from my car. It would be good practice for reps to test call the phone. That's what they did when I called back in for help.

It's cool though. After I finish working on the cell tower, I'm going to get my MSL's tattoed to my hands, ok bushdiverq?!

Does this affect your eligibility for a discount on a new phone later?
I have TEP for my BlackBerry Pearl. Say I switch to my Sanyo 8400 and then lose my Pearl (for whatever reason), would my TEP be void?

ESN swaps have never affected TEP, but they could potentially affect handset discount eligibility if it has been a very long time since you used a handset discount and still on the old handset discount system.

Getting my mogul this week. My son's M1 and my daughter's A920 will both be "retired" in favor of their Rumor and M520. So if I can get the MSL for these phones, I can migrate from my Mogul to one of them if I want to "downsize" for a day or something? That would be really great! When we got to football games, etc., sticking my PPC6700 in my pocket has always been a PITA (and you can't read the screen in sunlight).

I saved the required numbers in my Outlook contacts so switching between phones online is as simple as cutting and pasting! I also saved the programming (##________#) and instructions as a contact in each phone... it is now a breeze!

I am a little bit worried about the upgrade rebate issue, though... However, as a longtime customer, I don't really anticipate major problems when my 22 months is up...

You don't need to reprogram the phones every time - once they're programmed, you can just ESN swap them online and power cycle the phones and you'll be set.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I have read all the posts on the ESN swapping thing and I am confused ...

We have three phone/lines, A, B, & C. C is an activated spare line the sprint people screwed me over with (long story), that I pay for. But we only use A & B.

Phone B broke today (hinge), but phone C is brand new. How do I swap phone B & C's phone numbers? Is this an ESN SWAP? I'll keep the broken hinge phone C activated and use for emergencies. But otherwise it's an extra line.

Can some one post an idiot's guide to do the Swap, i am unfamiliar with the acronyms and MS?? used.

Thanks

Go to the sprint home page. Next to phone B click on the activate link, you go to a page where you enter phone C ESN. Then do the same thing on phone C link " enter phone B ESN".

Since both phones are currently active, you'll need to call *2 from one of the phones to initiate the swap. They will assign one line to a temporary ESN and swap them. The online swap only works for a phone that's not currently active.

Thanks,

I guess I did not clarify, all three phones are active and they all work. Just the hinge broke on phone B, phone C sits in my car 24/7 as a bluetooth phone. Phone B is ancient, but does what I need it to, sans bluetooth.

So I guess that they will charge me a "swap"/"activation" charge if I call them?

I guess the local sprint store can do the same for me?

Deval

The only problem with online swapping is if your plan is not compatible with the device you are swapping to.

And yes, the local sprint store can do it for you.

This is good to know.. i was in BestBuy upgrading my wife's phone... the BB rep didn't know I had SERO at first so he called his normal activation line who transferred him a few times. Then we got some real winner.... the poster boy for all the bad customer service reports on sprint... this guy was like talking to a robot with only 5 possible sentences... And he wouldnt allow the service rep at BB to talk to him, only me. Then BB has an exlusive color of the rumor Blue/Silver.. but the guy insisted that I had to have one of the other 3 colors before he could go to the next step.. finally we transferred to another guy.. and after an hour at BB mobile, we finally got her Rumor activated on the SERO acct.

I just bought a "Touch" on ebay so I will be upgrading my katana dlx too.... but it looks like it can't be done with SERO?? or was it just because of the EVDO to Non-EVDO phone?

The system doesn't give me the link to activate my new phone. It just keeps cycling and telling me to log in and go to phones. When I do there is no activation link, and yes I've been migrated. I HATE ENSEMBLE, I can't view my e-mails on line anymore, only through my phone and it's a major pain to have to sift through on the handset.

Guys,

I just wanted to report an interesting issue that popped up this weekend. I have been using the new online do it yourself swapping that the new billing system allows us to do top change my phones to "weekend phones" and this weekend and I had noticed that the screens had changed in that the system had asked my to verify my billing plan?

I had noticed today that my voicemail box was reset back to factory defaults??? did anyone else notice this??? :frustrate

Does anyone know with the new plans if it got rid of the Non-PV /PV online swap issue?

Before when swapping from a PV to a Non-PV you had to call and have them do it manually and hope that they would still honor your retentions or special internet pricing.

If we switch to the new Unlimited Data plan, can I swap on line from my Treo 700WX to my LG Rumor or is it still an issue?

Next to each individual phone - it says upgrade or activate phone, and in there is "already have/want a new phone" .. so.. yeah, somehow I didn't see that all this time. :tu: d'oh!

So, in effect, if I can get them to just affirm that my current rates as they are now, in total- will not go away I could get a phone on my own, eBay, etc- and just swap to my hearts content?

.. does swapping the ESN do anything to any rebate status?

It used to, even if you switched 'cause of bad equipment, when your two years came up they said "sorry, no rebate, you have not had *the current phone* on the acct. for more than xxxx months'

Here's my deal and I hope it's not redundant. I have an older LG phone and am just fine with that. My daughter (a minor) wanted the Instinct. We went to the Sprint store today, but her phone (Razor) was too new to upgrade, so we upgraded to the Instinct on my number. So, now my LG phone is inactive, the Instinct is active with my phone number, and her Razor still has her number attached to it. Can we activate my number back to my old phone, active the Instinct with her number leaving the Razor inactive thru the online process?

Oh, and we changed our plan when we did all this - we now share the 1500 minutes. Guess that wouldn't change?

And what is MSL??

For anyone wanting to switch phones without having to deal with C.S. I believe this (www.sprint.com/activate (http://www4.sprint.com/WLSApp/esnswap/do/Welcome)) is the way to go about it. Years ago this was a link on the Sprint home page. Not a link on the home page anymore, but nevertheless I'm glad they brought it back.

This is only good if your not upgrading to a PDA where you have to change your plan. Does any one know if you change your plan online will you lose your perks or not?

I just renewed my contract with a new Rumor. I got to keep my old free incomming plan and I added unlimitted data and messaging.

I know that the rumor is a vision phone but I want to buy a Mogul on ebay which I believe is a power vision phone.

Since I already have unlimitted data would there be a problem swapping between these 2 phones?

I have not yet got the mogul I want to be sure before I do, as well as I don't want to lose my free incomming plan since it no longer exists.

Deval

Yesterday I ended up going back to the Sprint store and exchanged my Rumor for the Mogul. I was still within the 30 days of the purchase of the Rumor.

I am a computer tech/computer geek and the rumor just didnt cut it for me.

Thanks to you all here at the forum I was able to make a better decision on what would be right for me. I only wish I had found it before I purchased the rumor but luckily it wasn't too late.

So for now I don't have to worry about swapping phones :)

Unless you are on one of the SE or Talk/Message/Data plans you can NOT switch from PV Mogul to a Non PV, phone, Rumor with out having to call *2, and have them change your data plan, pro-rate the usage and then call *2 change back your data plan (impossible if on a retntions plan) and pro-rate the usage.

I've tried. I want to swich at will from my Treo 700W and my Rumor. Hence why we gave up our old retentions plan, plus the bill was so screwed up each month, that I'd rather pay a few $ more and not have to call Sprint each month.

Can we activate my number back to my old phone, active the Instinct with her number leaving the Razor inactive thru the online process?

Oh, and we changed our plan when we did all this - we now share the 1500 minutes. Guess that wouldn't change?

And what is MSL??

Your situation is similar to what I am contemplating doing...I have a second line that has been "on vacation" for almost 6 months, with no phone assigned to it. It's out of contract and due for a $150 upgrade discount-I've been waiting to see what new phones come out. I want to get an Instinct and assign it to my primary line and hand down my current Muziq to my son for the second line. I'm hoping it will be possible to do an ESN swap with the phones, but am nervous about switching the plans between the 2 phones and having them get screwed up.

How do you know you're on the new billing system? If you get an invoice that looks totally different than what you used to get last December? If when you login it takes you to the Nextel payment system (by looking at the URLs)?

You will see a new account number from the past as well.

I am thinking about switching from my Razor (I've had it for probably about a year, give or take a little) to a Blackberry. Does anyone know if this will require a plan change? Say I try it online and it doesn't work....when I call CS, will they try to charge me and make me change my plan since I tried switching?

Quick question (sorry dont have time to go to another thread)....does anyone have a cheaper text messaging plan? For unlimited, it's $15/mo. My friend has t-mobile and they give her 300 minutes for $4. Does Sprint do anything like this or is there a way to negotiate it?

bush, i would other than that i have to cancel my a900 line before i try? and i dont want to pay the ETF and find out i cant even use the phone. the question i guess im asking is, would going from A420 to A900 be going from vision to power vision or whatever the requirements were talked about earlier in this thread? I really dont use web/data so to me, its not a big deal, i just like the phone better and has all my contacts already. thanks for all the help !

Touhy,
Did it work for you. I have a similar situation. I have a great retention plan with Vision. If I upgraded to a PV phone, could I switch it online and keep my plan the same. I dont want anyone touching or even looking at my plan. Check the sig and you will see why.

2 hours on the phone and talking to several reps.

I have been told over and over that I cannot activate my new Rumor on my line. My old phone was power vision and the Rumor is regular vision.

I've called back a few times and they said it can't be done. One guy said he could do it but in the end he said the system wouldn't allow it.

I wonder if that is why my wife had such a hard time changing her phone over. We were at Best buy exchanging her PV phone for the Rumor. After 2hours of the BB rep trying to get a CS agent that knew was SERO was, he finally got it switched over. I was really afraid they screwed something up but a month later and it still says "SERO" on the account page.

But it sounds like her next phone will be a problem now that SERO is gone and it forces an account change.

Well I think as long as you keep either a PV or V device, you are ok.

For example, I tried activating the Pro 700 on my employee line, and I was unable to do it online. I had to call employee care to do it. Once I went back to the M1, I was then free to activate a M610 with no problem online.

I went from Katana DLX to HTCTouch online without calling so you should have no problem.

ok, so im a new registered member to this site, but i've read around this thread and mostly want clarification, so if anyone can help me it'd be greatly appreciated.

I have the instinct and was wondering if it would be possible to swap it with my old sanyo scp-8400.http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:aI8Q0YzTOZTMGM:http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/scp_8400_fan.jpg i believe it is a power vision phone, but i know it has vast differences from my current phone. *i have the simply everything plan that came with the instinct, if this helps at all.

sorry if this has been addressed already, but any clarification would be helpful. thanks

Hey, I'm new to the forum here, but I had a question. My current phone (an LG Fusic) accidentally went through the wash and it's been acting pretty funky, so I've been thinking about just getting an LG Muziq since there is one listed on my local craigslist. What I'd like to know is how long the swap takes. What I'd like to do is meet whoever is selling it and do the swap right there to be sure it's not stolen since I've heard stolen phones have their ESN's blacklisted or whatever. Anyway, thanks!

For anyone wanting to switch phones without having to deal with C.S. I believe this (www.sprint.com/activate (http://www4.sprint.com/WLSApp/esnswap/do/Welcome)) is the way to go about it. Years ago this was a link on the Sprint home page. Not a link on the home page anymore, but nevertheless I'm glad they brought it back.

even thought the link is old thanks alot for this.

Yep...as long as your plan doesn't need to be changed, you can do the swap online. I tried to swap a push to talk phone onto my main line, and it requested I call customer care.

What kind of plan is needed for PTT? I'm wanting to buy the V950 when it comes out but I dont want or need PTT and my plan is too good for me to want to change.

I believe it does require a plan change, to the newer PTT plans. I could be mistaken though.

It may not go through, since it does the account maintenance. If the ESN is bad, it should most likely show an error message that you have to call customer care.

I just wanted to add to this tread. I have a Palm Centro since it first came out, and so I purchased a HTC Touch Pro last week. I like to play on my phone a lot, and I talk to my long distant girlfriend all evening (as well as other friends/family). For the past week, I activate the Palm Centro in the evenings, so that I can talk on the phone (which I still love), and I am able to free up the Touch Pro so that I can play with it, installing applications, hacking, tweaking, modifying it. Before I go to bed, or in the mornings, I just re-activate the Touch Pro.

The activation is instant. After I enter the ESN and click to confirm activation, it only takes a few seconds for the page to load up confirming activation of the new device.

I have been checking my account to see if I have gotten any charges, and everything looks good so far. I do love both phones, and I like being able to swap out between phones whenever I like. I do swap a lot.

The only thing I have noticed is that the internet still stays active on the previous device a decent time after I complete activation of the new device.
