I used POP to get my Gmail forwarded to my Centro but I noticed Google recommends using IMAP instead. It seems the POP is much easier to configure - just email and password and that seems to work just fine. is anyone here doing IMAP and what are the benefits over POP?

I'm having a little trouble with Autosync, it doesn't seem to automatically update. Also if I set it to update every 5 minutes Sprint seems to warn that each time it call is a "data call" and my result in additional charges - a data call is different that a phone call correct? Is this just a warning for those without an unlimited data plan? I can't imagine that people would be up in arms if Autosync was cutting into their anytime minutes.

If given the option, I always prefer IMAP. It doesn't work properly unless you download the Versamail 4.01 build 77 update for Centro, which you can find at www.palm.com/versamail407. Just go there with your Centro and you'll download it OTA. Assuming you've installed that, it's pretty easy to set up. All you do is put in your user name and password and Versamail configures the ports and stuff automatically.

The beauty of IMAP is it will sync with your Gmail Inbox. Not automatically though. The Autosync will retrieve messages automatically, but to sync the box (which POP can't do), so that say, you delete a message on the Centro and it is also moved to All Mail in Gmail, you just have to select "Sync Server Folders" under the Options menu, in the Gmail account.

And yes, a data call is just that--a warning that if you don't have an unlimited plan (foolish with a PDA!) then you will be charged by the KB. If you have an unlimited data plan, don't sweat that message.

hmmm, not sure I want the emails on my phone to be deleted in Gmail since I might need to go back to them at a later date. Will this preclude me from deleting messages on my phone to free up space? Any other benefits of IMAP? Is it more reliable, quicker?

You don't have to sync the folders. If you don't do the manual sync, you can delete emails on the Centro and they stay put in Gmail.

If you want to truly understand the differences between POP and IMAP, I recommend you do a google search...there are tons and tons of discussions on it.
