I currently have a Sanyo Katana and I think I'm ready to move up to a smartphone. I think I have narrowed the seach down to two: HTC Mogul or the Moto Q9c. I want a phone that I can easily sync with the Outlook on my PC as this is my primary source of email and where I keep my calender. I also text message more than I talk on my phone so I am looking for a messaging friendly keypad. Size is also somewhat of an issue, but during my research I have found out that both are about the same size roughly.

What are the pros and cons to each phone and which would you prefer for what I am looking for?

Thanks :tu:

Time honored debate.

If you have a bit more money and don't mind sliding the keyboard out every time you text, go for the Mogul. Its a better device in every way.

both devices have GPS, so thats a moot point

both devices run wm6 so thats a moot point

the mogul has a touch screen, the q9c does not

the mogul has wifi the q9c does not

the q9c includes an extended battery which gives it great battery life, the mogul does not but you can get one

both devices have a decent camera with a flash, so thats also moot,

to it pretty much boils down to whats more important

wifi, & touch screen

or

good battery life out of the box.

The major difference is the OS. There's less flexibility in the Smartphone OS compared to the Pocket PC OS. I find the Pocket PC OS easier to use and has more freeware programs available. The Q9c has a 1.3MP camera and the Mogul has a 2.0MP camera too.

You can also upgrade the Mogul to WM 6.1 right now for threaded messaging etc.

yea but in picture quality, the cameras take very similar quality pics (which are decent at best) the mogul just takes a larger pic.

and official 6.1 updates are supposedly confirmed for both devices.

the mogul currently runs a beta build of 6.1 via a hacked (or cooked) rom. (its not official final 6.1 because it lacks some of the newly announced features)

im just giving a comparison. thats all.

but my biased opinion is get the mogul, smartphones arent as easy to use or hack, and require extra effort to do alot of things that come easy to pocket pcs.

it should be mentioned too that the mogul screen and keyboard are bigger, but obviously have to slide out and by design that slide is an oppurtunity for physical failure. I would and did pick my Q9 over the mogul but if you have fat fingers the mogul might be better. and ive seen people post opinons otherwise but I consider the Q9 more stable. I think the mogul platform really deserved a ram upgrade to match the touch instead of (my opinion) trying to woo techies into the "new better" model (touch) which had so many upgrades but just no qwerty...

What are the missing features, out of curiosity? I just got done installing a hacked WM 6.1 ROM on my Blackjack 20 mins ago and I love it, its simply superb. Same with 6.1 on the Touch.

WM6.1 can't come soon enough for the Q9c.

in my experience, the mogul and q9c are just as stable as each other. but the mogul is quicker, only because it has a faster processor. and the true upgrade to the mogul is coming later, the touch is more of a counterpart then an upgrade which is why each device is receiving its own upgrade but theres another thread about that.

I've done quite a bit of research and think that my decision will be made when I can get into a Sprint store and play around on each model.

Mogul doesn't have Sprint TV FYI.

I'm debating the same issue. Let me know what you decide. It also makes we weary to buy a brand like HTC over a known powerbrand like Moto. I played with both at the store and still couldn't decide. I did notice the external speakers on the Q9c were very weak. Maybe I couldn't use it properly to get the volume maximized, but it was at 100% and barely audible.

The Q9c (and the Q) have very powerful external speakers. There might have been a setting misadjusted.

At first I really liked the Mogul but after some time the sliding keyboard annoyed me. I'm just quicker texting with the Q9c. Sound quality is subjective but the Q9c sounds better to me. I think the Q9C is a better phone and the mogul is a better pda.

People call in with way more issues pound for pound with Motorola phones than any other brand.

Being the Sprint phone junkie that I've been for many years every manufacture has it's issues. As far as durability, looks, and sound quality "I" think Motorola is at the top. If Motorola had Sanyo software or Sanyo had Motorola designs then that would be awesome.

LOL while I'm not trying to discredit your opinion I'm a Sprint technician. I work with the phones for a living. I've discovered the exact opposite. Sanyo is at the top with LG and Motorola being a close competition for the bottom rung.

LOL I really don't want to get into a manufacture debate. If it's true that more people call in about Motorola issues that doesn't mean the OP is going to have a issue with them. I just prefer a more clear earpiece (motorola) then a muffled earpiece (sanyo), Also prefer a thin design rather then a fatty (sanyo). As far as build quality Motorola is far better then LG.

Am I correct to assume that Sanyo makes HTC?

I did address this in your thread, but HTC is a VERY well know brand and makes MANY "OEM" phones, that it phones branded under a carrier name, including Sprint PPC6600, PPC6700, Verizon versions of both of those, the T-Mobile Wing and MDA, and the ATT Tilt among many others. I can understand that not personally knowing the HTC brand would lead you to that conclusion, but I assure you that HTC very much is a "powerbrand" as you describe Moto.
