I recently tried sending an international text message and it went through, I got an immediate reply from my friend. :tu: I would like to continue to use this method on some occasions and was wondering how much does it cost to send and to receive these text messages. Does sprint have a plan for it?
I currently have unlimited txt messages in my plan.

Sprint charges 20 cents per message sent to an international number.
AT&T charges 25 cents per message sent to an international number.
All carriers charge standard rates for incoming messages from an international number, so if you have unlimited text you only get charged extra for outgoing messages.
Sprint does not currently have any "discounted" plans for international text.
Sprint did recently update their list of carriers in other countries that they now have agreements with and it is greatly improved over the previous list of countries. The list and country codes can be found here:
Sprint could really get an edge over the competition by including international text as part of the texting package.

That would be a great feature to think about. Mull it over Sprint!

I have started to use International SMS and it work!
So it charges .20 per message to sent out?
I have the SERO plan and does that mean incoming is free as someone said?
I wish Sprint got a international SMS plan.

I don't think Sprint (or any carrier) could justify allowing unlimited international text. Remember Sprint has to pay when you send an international SMS. As it is they are cheaper than most.
One way around this is if you can obtain the mobile address of your friends phone and send an SMS to their mobile address instead of phone number, then it counts as a "regular" non-international SMS.
In other words, instead of sending to 011xxxxxxxxxx send to 123456789@carriername.xxx
Every phone in the world has a mobile address, the trick is figuring it out. Your Sprint mobile address is your phone number @ messaging.sprintpcs.com
You can obtain your friends mobile address by getting them to send an SMS to your email address (yahoo, gmail, or whatever). When it shows up, it'll come from their mobile phones address. Take that address and put it in your phones phone book and use it to send SMS to them and it will be counted against your regular (unlimited if you have it) domestic messages.
While i can not confirm that this is 100% true, it "appears" that currently SMS's to canada are not charged at the international rate. You may want to verify that before you get carried away with it though. When you log onto sprint.com and look at your usage it will show SMS's sent, and if you send international SMS's it'll show a seperate column for those.

Incoming messages are not charged at any special rate, regardless of where they originate. You can verify this by reading the information on Sprints website.
In other words, if you have unlimited SMS, then incoming SMS are unlimited regardless. You only pay for outgoing if sent to an international phone number. If you send to an email address of the persons phone it counts against your unlimited as well.

Well they kinda do, iDEN users international texts are not charged extra, they come out of the plan - for now, that could change any time though.

I know about this using SMS as an email format.
The trick is, most oversea telephone company have stop using SMS based email. They also want to be in to make money.
I'll ask my friend to to sent me an email from his/her phone and see if I can decode it. Thanks!

This is a somewhat related question, but what is the charge if I am abroad(international) and send a text to the US? What type of charge would that incur?

Depends on the particular country you are in, sometimes you will have text capabilities, sometimes not, depends on network and device type.
Are you traveling somewhere specific, or just asking for reference?
