View Full Version : Speed of Vision & Sprint Network in General

Hi,

Just now considering getting a PDA phone for internet access and I'm curious as to others' experiences with regard to web and email access over the Sprint network in general. Fast? Slow? Any complaints?

I ask because my employer has recently gotten a little jerky about internet access while at work and, while this is understandable, I do need to have occasional access to my email. I'm defintely a geek in the computer sense of the word, but really don't know very much at all about PDA's, smartphones, etc...so here I am.

That said, I was just checking out a friend's phone, the Samsung Blackjack 2. He has service with AT&T. He's using a pushmail client that, to me, seems to snarf up his email very quickly...almost at broadband speeds. Since I have Sprint and not AT&T, I decided to check out a couple of PDA phones at a local Sprint store to see what was available, and have to say I was pretty disappointed. I looked at twoTreos (700wx and 700P) and another phone and, to me, both of them seemed a lot more difficult to use, with a speed that was much more sluggish than what I observed on my friend's PDA. Not sure if this is attributable to the phones (beat up display models), their location, or the network itself (GSM vs. CDMA) - but it seems to me the web access I saw was pretty slow and cumbersome. So, I ask:

Have other people had this same experience and, if so, have you determined the cause?

Any recommendations for phones that'll give quick access to the web and email that'll get me there without having to punch a bunch of keys the size of atoms (Treo) and with a speed that'll be at least tolerable for someone used to using a PC?

Anything I'm missing here?

Thanks very much...

Z

The Blackjack 2 is 3G I believe. UTMS is pretty damn close to EVDO (GSM vs. CDMA data) so if you get a Rev 0 phone it will be pretty comparable. I'm not a big fan of Treos. I have the Sprint Mogul and I love it to death. I have it synced with my exchange server and emails come through real time. Since the Mogul does EVDO Rev. A the internet speeds can be second to none. As a reference I used my Mogul to play on Xbox Live the other day and I even hosted a match! I usually see downloads upwards of 900 kilobits/sec and uploads around 400.

That looks a lot more like what I'm looking for, and I'll definitely have a closer look. Thanks!
