View Full Version : Will a 2nd SERO line affect my credit if s/he defaults?

My grandmother wants to get a SERO account like mine and get rid of her phone. My line has a few perks that a regular SERO line doesn't have, and I'd like her to have it. My question is, if she gets a 2nd line under my SERO plan and then gets it terminated, will that affect my line or my credit in any way?

Yes. If the account is in your name, you are responsible for ANYTHING that happens on that line.

In other words, get grandma her own Sprint account under her own name.

Yea getting grandma her own line under her name is the best option because when grandma calls in for support you don't sprint to notice anything on your line if you guys are on the same account and strip those features off your line.
Plus if you add a line for her under your account they may run another credit check under your name because the account is under your name.

Thanks, everybody. I have no doubt that if she gets a Sprint phone, she'll have it cut off, and there's no way I'm going to be left holding the bag. My SERO deal is too sweet to risk, even on Grandma.

Why do u think once she gets it she will terminate it if you already have the feeling that she will why take the risk in the first place knowing thats what she might do.

Is that any of your business, ShadowX? What I do doesn't affect your phone line.

1st, if someone offends you with their post, don't reply. It just starts flame wars :(

2nd, if you fear she wont pay the bill and she may not need texting and data, see how she does with a prepaid AT&T phone. You can generally pick one up on line for about $30 and it comes with $10 worth of air time and a Sim card.

Prepaid may be the right choice for her, or a "pick your plan" type option on boost mobile, at&t or verizon. In that way, you pick up an inexpensive phone and their is no contract for her to default on.

Just some suggestions :)

don't ever get anyone including family something, anything in your name unless you already plan to pay it for them forever, this goes along the lines of don't lend anyone more money than you would give to them, and is just good advice for everything financial. I do have my mom and and step dad on my plan but I pay it for them because im hoping for an inheritance someday  but I would never put it in my name (on my credit) if I expected them to pay, even though they are by far wealthier than I and seemingly more responsible. getting your grandmother an AAP on your plan or getting her her own line on SERO in your name and paying it for her would be a great and wonderful thing to do, but just remember its your line, your responsibility. and if you cant afford it don't do it. and if none of this was my business than never mind and do what you will but you asked. :tu:

I guess the question is why do you think she'll get it cut off? Non-payment? If she is on your account then you are paying the bill. If she wants the plan to save money, then just have her pay you and you take care of making sure it is paid timely. Unless yours is really different, I found Grandmas usually don't want to shortchange their grandchildren - their kids maybe but not the grandchildren. :hee:
I carried my father and father-in-law on my account for years mainly so THEY could NOT cancel the phone service. I wanted them to have the phone for emergencies. Their viewpoint was it is a luxury that they do not use much so why keep it? My compromise was to carry the phone in my name and to pay the bills. They never used too many minutes and it is not abused.

Chilidogtampa has good points - if you can afford it and she needs it, pay for it. If you can't don't. I pay for my father-in-law's phone because I want him to have it. I decided it wasn't worth trying to get my brother/sister-in-laws to kick in for the service. He was my husband's dad so he deserves it - though it bugs me sometimes that his kids don't even consider it.

That is what I was trying to say I apologize if I wasnt clear. I was just saying if u feel that she may do it why take the risk thats all.

Honestly, yes. I figured that putting her on my plan would mean I'd be left holding the bag, but I wasn't sure, which was why I asked first. Some people have to act like self-important douchebags and put their two cents in, of course, but at least I got my answer. I'll tell her she's going to need to stick with her prepaid until she can get an account in her name.

"Is that any of your business, ShadowX? What I do doesn't affect your phone line." Well yes YOUR the one who brought it into a public forum :-) hehe

anyway there IS a way to handle this. My brother wants a phone. He is VERY unreliable has burned many people. SO I said SURE I will get you a phone under THESE conditions.

#1 I will pay for your new phone but I KEEP IT and you get one of my other phones (I have quite a few and I know he wants my A900)

#2 you provide to me up front $250 in cash

#3 the terms are this. YOU do not default. if your account is late more than 30 days on the 31st day I use the $50 to pay your late bill and the $200 to terminate your account by paying the ETF. (I confirmed with sprint this would have ZERO detrimental affects to me my account or my credit/rating with sprint.)

I might budge on the new phone being mine thing but I won't budge on the $250 cash up front. That protects MY BUTT :-)

Depending on your grand mom you might want to have her pay a year up front. its only going to be about $426 apply your $25 Referral to it and you now have almost 13 months covered.
