does anyone else feel like they are being taken for a ride with text messaging? I am a sprint user of 6 years, and i have had vision, and power vision on my phone for quite some time. I use the gmail phone application very frequently, and I can send and receive e mails for no extra charge. I also have unlimited picture mail.
So why am i still being charged pertext message!? I have a plan for 500 texts a month, but why are we still keeping count. Its 2008 baby. The internet on my phone is perfectly capable of sending messages if i were to use a website, like sprint users, to send a text.
If anyone has the tech knowhow, they should make an application which sends texts for free over vision service, something like the gmail app. The app should also import your address book
what a brilliant idea! youll save on at least half of your text messages, while simultaneously sticking it to the man.

First welcome!
We are glad you are here!
Second, if you have 500 text you can use SU to send text and only reveive and hopefully not go over you 500 text limit.
I'm sure if someone made a work-a-round that Sprint and other carriers would shut it down like the MMS work-a-round.
If you have unlimited picture mail I have heard of people who use that for sending short messages and avoid the text messages all-together.
However, some would consider that ripping off Sprint.

Someone wrote an app...4-5 years ago, it was a simple J2ME program, which allowed you to send messages over the internet.
I think the developer stopped working on it once SMS was rolled out.

hmmm... i know on my old 8100, i was NEVER charged for texts because it was a part of my vision service! I sure wish i could go back to that...
Just seems like such a ripoff... and i just found out i only have 300 text messages...
ugh
and it also stinks because using Sprintusers does not allow me to import my address book... so id have to memorize numbers and such.
The idea for an app is BRILLIANT, somebody that is smarter than me... do it!

A rip off? Everyone charges for SMS, regardless of what company you use.

My mistake, i didnt qualify my statement
text messaging is a ripoff if you have a power vision pack. The idea that you are paying for a service per unit, which should be covered by a service i pay unlimited for, is in fact a ripoff...
If it wasnt a ripoff i should be able to go back to the text messaging i had on my old sanyo 8100, which was web based and didnt charge me per text.

Hmmm...I can see your point, but everyone charges separate for web and SMS. I think it allows users to pick and choose what they want to use

I just discovered that when I send a picture mail, I use a text... I didn't think that was the case, but it would seem so. I haven't decided how to talk to sprint about this yet. Sure seems like double dipping on their part to me, unless perhaps my picture mail is not provisioned correctly...

Text messages are a rip off. If we where getting charged .20/ minute of talk time everyone would be throwing a fit.

so why are we putting up with it again?

Because people are addicted to text messaging. Supply and demand. Customers demand it, and the carriers can charge out the ears for it and people swallow it.

i know that this might not be of anything you guys are saying, but before i'd upgrade to my a900 I was never charge for text messages, internet, picture mails. However, after I upgraded, sprint wanted to charge me for those services. I just didn't understand why? they told me that because my new phone will only work with the power vision and not with the old vision plan that I had on my old phone. I was furious and so Sprint just gave me free 500 text mesg. for each of my lines and of course am still being charge for picture mails and internet, but am being credited every month for the services. which I was thankful for, but I still didn't like seeing that charge on my statements, cause it just makes it more confusing.

For you, but not for them. See unfortunately that's how the system works. It sucks but that's the way it is. But I do remember how it was when it was just "vision". My old Free&Clear plan already had free texting, picturemail and vision. Which I do miss, and how with our current plan (Fair&Flexable) I'm paying out my ears on everything! I would like to switch to two SERO accounts but don't know why I haven't yet. Sad. :(

but then what I don't get is that if an individual has upgrade their handset, they should be able to keep their plan that they had before. Because all they did was buy a new phone and extend their contract. And if the new phone only support the power vision and not the old vision, then they should be able to get it for free cause on their old contract they had the old vision for free. I understand if that individual make make changes to their plan but in my case I didn't do any changes other than extend my plan and buy a new phone.
gee, I wonder what other mess I will run into this time since I am upgrading my phone again to an mogul. I havent told sprint about it yet cause I havn't recieved it yet. But I should in by today or 2morrow.

It all depends on what rep does the ESN swap for you. If you had free vision, you may get a rep who will just change the code to the free powervision code, or they may want you to get a "pay" code. be polite, but firm in the fact that you dont see how a differewnt phone should cost you more for the same internet.
Sprint has codes for free vision, free picture mail and free unlimited texting. They can offer you those free options, or offer you to pay $5 more than you were before, as EVDO is much faster, and you will probably use alot more data on a mogul than any "flip" phone sprint has. Be reasonable and you will probably get a fair offer.
Edit: you have an a900, which uses the same powervision as the mogul. You should not have to change anything :D

no. "Power Vision" is sprint's name for EV-DO.
