Okay, I browsed the forum for awhile here and I think I know the answer at this point, but I want to double-check with you folks first.
I just purchased the Sony VAIO SZ750N/C laptop, which has a Sprint EVDO data card built into the laptop itself. I would like to activate this on a SERO plan, but I need to figure out if it's possible to registry directly with SERO using the data card. (I will obtain my own email address from a local Sprint store, I know the rules about asking for one here and I don't intend on doing that. ;) )
From what I can tell, if you order online, you MUST purchase a phone (even a free one). As I have no interest in keeping a spare phone around, I'd prefer not to do this. Nonetheless, it looks like I seem to have two primary options:
1) Order the free phone and do an ESN swap as soon as I can.
2) Registry via my laptop to activate the modem (and the free month's service), then call Employee Accounts and have them switch the rate plan to the SERO one.
Option #2 seems to be the least hassle to me. Am I correct here? (Also, is this kind of card even eligible? I would be surprised if it weren't.) Thanks for the info in advance!

sero is for voice plans, for data plans you would just need to activate a data card plan

Aye, I know, I meant a data plan. :) From what I see on SERO's website, there ARE data card plans under SERO. Am I mistaken?
Edited to add: Also, if I have to do the buy-and-switch route, would I have to order a data card in order to be able to ESN-switch to the internal card?

sero offers data cards, but not data card plans (dunno why) if you try to check out with a data card it will give you an error saying there is no compatible plan. if you somehow are able to order off the sero site it will offer you the standard $50 plan.
at least thats how it was when i signed up back in january for my nextel sero plan, i tried to do it for kicks and it did the above.

Copy that, thanks for the info. I'll check with my friend and see what he got (I know he's on SERO and he has a data card as well as his phone.)
Appreciate it!

yea he probably has a sero plan for the phone, and a basic data card plan for his card, i know about a year ago there was a glitch that let you get a $30 data card plan on sero but that has been fixed, now it either denies you totally, or just prompts you to get a normal data card plan.

Several days later, I'm happy to report the plan IS available. :) Lemme explain.
I went ahead and activated on the free month offer from Sony on Sunday and talked to the rep about the SERO offering. She confirmed to me that there was a $49.99/month unlimited data plan available for data cards, but before we could get into details, I had to be switched over to the credit department for an unrelated problem (nothing serious). However, in the shuffle, the data plan activated was the standard $59.99/month consumer one.
So, I called back today, as this was my first real chance, and talked to customer service. I explained the situation (meant to be on SERO, that request was lost in the shuffle to the Credit department) to the rep I got called over to Employee Service, and after a few questions confirming my referral, they were able to change my rate plan to the SERO one. :)
So yes, it does exist and it's quite available, and oh man is this connection sweet! Nice perk with this laptop is that I'm a button press away from switching between the EVDO network and Wireless-N. :)
