Looking at Sanyo over the last few years, the pros don't seem all that promising. None of thier highends had a shelf life of more than 9 months so if we even see these how long will they be on shelves. What's on display is hardly midrange so I guess that bodes well

I love the look of the black one with that aluminum bezel around the outer LCD. Sweeet! I'm a diehard Sanyo fan, and hope that this model is finally the step up from the M1 that i've been waiting for. Do you know if it is the uplevel version of the Pro series phones? Or are both models you show are the same phone, just different colors?
Thanks for the pics!

i have to agree with dubspoon, when the M1 came out it seemed as if most stores never even had it on display and a few months later it was replaced by the upstage as sprints new "flagship" phone and was thus never really promoted.

OK. So does that mean that if one is in the "Sprint Mobile Broadband" (orange) coverage area that they will in fact have EVDO Rev A coverage when devices become available? I've tried looking through the coverage site, but its never really been too clear on that. Or am I just missing it?

Please people don't risk your job just to tell us new phones are coming out. Most of us will not even buy the phones when they come out and we will not help you pay your bills when they are due.
You get nothing more than a "thank you for posting". Be smart

On the plus side it looks like they are trying to keep the good wounding external speakers which have been unique to Sanyo. They need to fix the keyboard so the whole thing lights up. And why can't they put in a bigger screen? I'm still waiting for a decent replacement for my MM-5600!!!

Going by the pics that have been posted the 200 and 700 look like a variant of the Katana/DLX's, we've speculated the 900 will be sidekick like. So does that mean the 800 might replace the M1

I would tend to agree with you - but wouldn't you think that as a user of a more feature full DC phone one would tend to look down at a simpler qchat device? I don't know that I would switch unless it was something that was at least comparable.
But then, I've never even really looked at the DC or qchat phones before because it's not a feature that I require at this point in time.

The lax attitude you are stipulating above is the very reason the Sprint Corporation as a whole is on the brink of falling apart. The days of waiting months to roll out the actual mass market phones people want to buy need to end. If they think they're going to be releasing "simple" phones with the very technology they are banking to save the ship, well, that's just a giant pipe dream. Aggressive action within the company needs to be taken to rid Sprint of it's current culture of laziness. That's great that you sell a lot of low end phones, have you looked at Sprint's finances and subscriber numbers lately? Spring is failing with it's high-paying business and consumer customers. Unfortunetly for them, not everyone is on subprime credit.

There is alot more involved in releasing phones than just reading about it on a web board.

And with all due respect, are you? Even Sprint's new CEO has acknoledged that their handset selection needs to be quickly ramped up. This "wait for 6 months" attitude that CEBU employees is why Sprint has the phone selection is does. I don't care how smart the marketing, finance and product development people are, becuase one look at Sprint's fourth quarter results tell me their not. Just wondering, but have you cared to look at them? Sprint Corp. is in dire straights at the current time.

With Kyocera's buyout of Sanyo, we may never see the Pro 700 & 800. I love my M1 for features, but I have to say that my MM7500 is by far the best built phone I've ever had.
What would be nice if Kyocera takes over where Sanyo wouldn't go. Build a phone with the ruggedness of the MM7500 (or how about the military spec 7050?) and all the best features of the MM9000 and the M1. Then they'd finally have a phone that was actually worth what they charge us.

See this is BS IMO Sprint keeps everything under such lock and key. It's people like Person51 who posted pics and info on phones that were coming that HAS KEPT ME WITH SPRINT. If there was no information on future phones (read: nothing to look forward to on Sprint's horrid line up of sh*t phones) I would've left a long time ago. Well, I certainly hope you're right, but it wouldn't really be a loss to Kyocera. Sanyo has already eaten the loss. Also, I was thinking of the patent wars that were going on. I'm not 100% up to date on that, but it might be possible that Kyocera will find it more advantageous for them to let it go and steer things in a slightly different direction.
I really hope that the Pro 800 does get released though, & soon, I'm ready for at least 1 upgrade.

While you both have great points, here's the thing though: The number of people that view this site and other "gadget" sites are so tiny in comparison to Sprint's subscriber base. Go out on the street and ask everyone you see with Sprint if they've heard of the PRO series.
$5 says if you do it for 8 hours, you will not find one person who has heard or seen of this phone.

The car industry is not the same as the cellphone industry. And you can come to expect a new Accord on a yearly basis, that is not the case with cellphones. Also the competition in the car industry is completely different. "Sprint won't release information on the successor to the Sanyo M1 as to not provide Verizon with ideas to improve their LG Chocolate"? Makes no sense, however Honda keeping info on their next Accord under wraps because it directly competes with the Toyota Camry is an entirely different and understandable situation. All I am asking is how do we [Sprint Customers] LOSE if we know more information about future Sprint devices?

On the plus side it looks like they are trying to keep the good wounding external speakers which have been unique to Sanyo. They need to fix the keyboard so the whole thing lights up. And why can't they put in a bigger screen? I'm still waiting for a decent replacement for my MM-5600!!!

right, but i think sprint is considering price of these devices more than the technology. Its sad because there are people out there willing to pay for these devices that have the technologies we want, but then you have the cheap people who want the world for free, and they ruin it for everyone.

Don't get me wrong it's great news but sadly enough it seems like PTT is on it's way towards a downward spiral....seems like the crowd has moved on to Smart phones. I wish Sprint had marketed Ready Link much better along with DC and who knows the interest for PTT would have stayed high but in my opinion Sprint killed it. I walked into a Sprint store yesterday in Orlando (Sand Lake and OBT) and as customeres were entering I saw a majority of them showing an interest in the following phones 1. Black Berry Pearl, Moto Q9, Palm Centro, HTC Mogul, HTC Touch and the new Samsung Ace...oh well.
PokerFace23
02-22-2008, 10:56 PM
WELL
it seems like PTT may be going out.. for consumers.
you have to think about the big businesses and group connect. it is more expensive and time consuming to have your secretary call 20 employees to tell them the exact same message or set up a separate land-line so they can call in to listen to a conference call.
and blackberry is going to putting out a phone on the direct connect side, finally.

I still think the approach is wrong. If QChat is supposed to replace Nextel's DC, then Sprint's first order of business would need to be QChat <--> DC connectivity. This would help get people to start rolling off of nextel phones and onto qchat phones, without missing a beat, eventually phasing out the iDEN.
Instead, QChat is QChat only. And Nextel just released 4 new DC phones a month ago. QChat is just gonna be ReadyLinkv2... and fall flat on its face.
The Pro 700 will sell since it does have Rev A and people will be interested in the novelty of QChat... just like people were into RL when it first came out. But a year from now it will just be another "Thick" sanyo with a "memo" button
I really hope they don't add QChat to the 900 if it ever comes out... That ship has sailed

Found this link in another thread, but it pertains more to the phones discussed in this thread:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Sprint-will-launch-several-new-phones-in-April-article-a_2489.html
So looks like Qchat does have interoperability with current Nextel DC... thats what I was unclear about. So that's good for keeping existing Nextel DC customers. But it appears QChat is functionally no diff than DC... so there's no real draw to non-nextel users except that they can DC their buddies with Nextel now... that gets old after the 2nd time your buddy chirps you in the middle of a work meeting and says "CHIRP... WHats up b!tch!.. CHIRP"
So it will keep existing Nextel'rs happy, but there is no real interest (or functional difference) to those who have already tried DC or RL.. its basically RLv2 with DC crossover support, and the actual patented nextel "chirp" (sans the 10 sec idle wait when done using RL, before you could make calls again)

Yes, but you don't realize how big Push-To-X really is. There is a huge user base, and it is growing by the day. There are alot more features coming down the pipe I believe, other than just 'chirpin'.

Well I dunno how big it is to normal users... I can see construction and elevator operators using it.. And dispatch based businesses. Basically any business that needs to be able to Blurt emergency information freely over the airwaves without waiting for your consent to answer the phone.
the "NEED" doesn't extend much past that. Mostly its the "Where you at?" urbanites that just like to annoy people on the train while their girlfriends sing "Happy birthday" to them over the walkie and the rest of the train gets to hear staticcy garbage.

yeah, i'm all about hating on nextel users. its one thing if you are running a business, but i see no purpose in walking around <insert random store/public place> and screaming into your phone like my unamericanized greek father does whenever i hand him my cellphone to talk to a family member. i seriously hate having to hear people talk, especially when the other party is coming through a speaker on their phone with so much static that i don't even know what they're saying, which makes me wonder how the intended listener even knows. and on top of it, i don't know about anyone else, but i hate being on speakerphone, and i really hate having other people listen to my calls. i don't even like to talk on my bluetooth in public because it looks like i'm talking to myself, and i feel as though i can talk lower through the mic on my phone than my headset. i really hope that one day we can get away from the speakerphone walkietalkie bull****. its an ancient idea. its my understanding that these people can use the ptt thing on their phone through their phone's internal speaker, which leaves even less reason to have it come out on the speaker. its one thing if its a cop or something, to have random calls coming through a speaker attached to their body.....or a taxi driver. but the average person just isn't important enough to bother everybody else with their conversations.

I for Sprint IT, as a lot of the people here already know, and I find PTT perfect for asking quick questions to my other guys, or trying to coordinate a client meeting.
I think you deal with a lot of those 'urbanites' but there is a huge market for it.

Hmm i thought nextel was only in USA. Then it would be useful for a normal user. Tho assuming you meant nationwide, then i guess it could still be useful if you can have just D/C and pay only $10/mon to talk to families from NY to Cali... but i thought you needed to have a plan as well, and i think the basic plan these days includes nationwide coverage or at least free mobile-to-mobile... at least they should. Even the landline phone companies have switched over to a region free plan now.
But sanyo does force us to have those devices :) Since they seem to include that feature on their higher end models with other features that we love so much.
I'm not saying they are bad.. there is certainly a market for them. I'm just saying those of us who have tried RL or had Nextel in the past aren't likely excited to try qchat, as functionally its identical to existing DC, just basically doubling the amount of users with sprint & nextel being able to use it. That in itself might be a reason for people to get it if their phone supports it. But we've gone this long without it and its useless still for calling friends on other carriers. (I think I have only one friend with Sprint, one nextel, the rest Tmobile or AT&T), and the low-end phones would likely be a good replacement for the low-end nextels that exist now for businesses who are giving just basic phones for talkin to their staff.

I liked RL.. What was the main performance problem? I was doing tests with my friend who worked for nextel (pre-merge).. he had a nextel and his co worker did too, I had RL and my friend did too.
RL was about 1 sec slower. Still not what I would consider a performance issue, as that could still be considered "instant". The biggest let down was after the first week of hype, there was no one else to talk to. At that time I had 3 nextel friends... if the 2 sprint people could talk to the 3 nextel people ... RL might have won us over.
QChat appears to be that answer... but now i'm down to 1 nextel (cuz nextel had that text-messaging problem and people left) and 1 sprint friend... maybe i just need better friends :P
What "other" features can there be? Instant video? IM? Are you referring to "other" features of qchat or DOrA? I think the "chat" in Qchat goes about as far as it can.

I really like the PTT and I think it's a great feature that not only are great for business but can be great for consumer too. This 'Push-to-X" idea is great. It's great for people who need to be in constant communication without the wait. With Rev. A and Push-to-X the possibilities are amazing. Pushing a picture instantly with the push of a button, pushing a contact information, an address or a LBS coordinate. We are all about instant gratification. You need to send a picture but don't want to wait up to a minute for the other person to get it. You pick the picture, pick the person you want to send it to, push your DC button, you hear that infamous chirp and instantly that image appears on the other persons handset. Same could work for e-mail or an attachment. I think it's great and its something that can set Sprint apart from the competition. It has immense potential and as long as its developed the right way then it can be revolutionary.

Push-to-X is the idea behind the possibilities of Sprint DirectConnect. It's more than just push-to-talk its push to _____ fill in the blank. This is whats going to differentiate Sprint from the competition. That and WiMax. :)

Well lets pretend I "get" the concept. Does D/C currently do that stuff now?
Assuming the answer is no, is this only going to work with phones that have QChat? or will this work for any phone using DOrA? Since really qchat is just an application that runs on DOrA.. I would think that DOrA would be the backbone, not the qchat application.
Deval

well by that logic, our voice calls are also over the DOrA backbone.
Qchat allows iDEN < -> CDMA PTT...it is basically a software and hardware IP gateway between the 2 technologies.
Since it is over CDMA, there are alot more data-intensive applications which can be developed for it.

That's my point.. which is why I'm asking.. is "Push-to-X" only available on QChat phones or all phones that use Rev A? I mean Push-to-X is basically the equivalent of Instant Messenger on the computer, which should be based on the DOrA backbone and not the QChat middle bone.

Sprint has already said that they are branding push to talk as Direct Connect on all platforms. It was Direct Connect before the merger and the branding was changed to walkie talkie now it is back as DirectConnect. QChat was the application developed by Qualcomm. Sprint is branding it as DirectConnect. DirectConnect makes sense because it is not just about walkie-talkie its about having a direct connection to the other user. Push-to-X is the possibilities behind DirectConnect. Push-to-Talk, Push-to-Send, Nextmail and other future possibilities.

Sanyo needs to stop screwing around and make a phone that combines all the modern features of the DLX and the style, mil. spec ruggedness, battery, and reception of the 7050. Who else is tired of these girly thin phones that have no battery life or reception? I was talking to a Sprint rep who said if they made a rugged 7050 with all the features of the DLX, Sanyo phones would go flying off the shelves--and i believe him.
