So i bought a IC502 off of E-bay. Having purchased several phones through E-Bay i wasn't too concerned with it working. It arrived and had no SIM card. Luckily I had a SIM card from a previous nextel phone. I popped it in and it said "incorrect SIM card". I assumed this was because it had to be set up. When I called and gave them them the ESN they told me that the phone was active on someone else's account? I asked was it stolen? Claimed on insurance? Do they owe sprint money? Of course they "couldn't tell me that info" just that they were unable to activate the phone.

Anyone else been though this? What does it mean? I have e-mailed the seller hoping that it was his personal phone and he can clear it up with sprint. Any info would be helpful!

what this more than likely means is that his account with sprint is still open, and has not been finalized, when contacting him ask him to contact customer care and verify his account is closed, if it is not have them close it for him, as a personal tip whenever getting a phone off of ebay always contact the seller first ask for the esn and call customer care to verify that it is clear

When purchasing a used phone, I always tell people to get the ESN from the seller and clear it with the cell provider BEFORE paying for the item. You can call Sprint and clear an ESN. We'll run it and make sure you'll be able to use the device before you shell out the cash for the item. I assume it's this way with any cell provider but I can only speak for Sprint.

Unfortunately, unless the seller is willing to refund your money or clear up the account problems with Sprint, you're going to be stuck with a useless phone. Maybe the seller just forgot to remove the phone from his account when he sold it.

If an ESN/SIM card number has been reported stolen, lost, the device is still listed as active on an account or the person who originally owned the phone owes Sprint money, then you will never be able to use that device with Sprint until the situation is cleared up. In the case of a stolen or lost device, the ESN is flagged and it can NEVER be used with Sprint unless the original owner activates it on their OWN account.
