The 8500 is no where near what the 9000 was. I'd send it back. They have refurb 9000's.

Yeah send it back or request a 7050. Apparently those phones are tough and have good reception. Remember the day when Sanyos weren't plagued with "software bugs" It's a phone. How hard could the software be to write?

I personally think the Katana DLX or SCP 8500 is one of the better phones that has been available in the past year.
I have had the MM7500, which was a fairly good fun, and couldnt stand the MM 8400 or M1, neither of them had good reception.
The reception of the Katana DLX very good, and it seem to be a solid phone.. However, there is no phone that compares to the MM 9000. The MM 9000 is the flagship phone that Sanyo produced, and there has been nothing close to that phone since. The only thing that it lacked was bluetooth, otherwise the MM9000 has been the best phone..

The 8500 is not, in my opinion a replacement for the 9000. It's not a bad phone, just not something I'm comfortable with. I actually liked the 8400 more than the 8500/DLX.
i never owned a 9000, so i really dont know what all the hype is about. i have the dlx and the M1 and i like them both. the dlx's battery last a while longer than the M1, and that is the reason why i am using it as my main phone right now.

I have the 9000 again, and LOVE it. Comparing it to the DLX is not fair.
The 9000 is a Lamborghini, while the DLX is a Taurus.
Sports Car vs common Family Car.
I wished the 9000 had BT, but I can swap to my A900 when I need that!
I too am dissapointed in the current lineup of SPCS phones. But I'd rather have function than flash.
While I am an AVID user of ALL of SPCS functions, I want it all to WORK, not just look good.
Kinda like me, rough to look at, but I can do just about anything.
NO, I cannot build a ThermoNuclearDevice! But I could try!

The 7050 is a great phone......and that's about it. Definetly not even close the features that are available on the 9000.

Give it some credit. The DLX is more than a taurus. Give it at least mustang status over the 9000's lambo status if you will.
What's your problem with the DLX? Name me a few things more you'd like it to do (maybe besides transfering ringtones, because we know sprint cripples most of its phones.)
I haven't had a 9000, but have played around with a few, and I think the DLX is a great alternative to a legendary phone. It may not be the flag ship phone the 9000 once was, but right now, it's the best sanyo phone IMO>

I just did a side by side comparison and the katana deluxe 8500 blows the 9000 away. the only thing that the 9000 has and 8500 doesn't is ready link, which is useless any way. the 8500 has more on board memory, better screen quality, internal antenna, sprint navigation, sprint tv, louder and more clear ringtones, and a faster os if you asked me.

Better screen quality? Are you kidding?
They have the same resolution and the 8500's screen is smaller...how is that better?
There's another thing the 9000 doesn't have that the DLX does...NAI. ;)
I'll stick with my 9k.
I had a 9000 for almost two years until I fried it with an iGO adapter which was plugged in backwards on the cord (ARGGH), and decided on the DLX to replace it about a week ago.
Advantages of each. Note that I don't care about Sprint TV (do people really pay for and use this?) or ringtones (never had a problem with the volume of the 9000 ringer):
9000:
- Flash (therefore probably better camera - haven't compared picutres yet though - also has 'macro' switch which I rarely if ever used - actually I've had this be on accidentally so may even be a negative);
- Much better speakerphone (louder, on front of phone - also the ringer comes from the speaker so I've already missed a text on the DLX by having it sitting face-up on my bed (speaker on back of DLX));
- Flashlight;
- bigger screen;
- can transfer pictures directly to computer using USB cable;
- better exterior buttons including volume position;
- more exterior buttons (including speaker and voice memo/call record, which the DLX does not have)
- better games, which I discovered a couple weeks before I killed the phone (DLX has no free games). Not a big deal (plus a battery killer), but I did enjoy that ball-shooting breakout game on a plane once!
DLX:
- Thinner;
- Lighter;
- Bluetooth (I've never used but important for some people)
- I think the earpiece is a bit clearer on the DLX (I found myself saying "what" more than usual on the 9000, which always bothered me a little)
- Couple of minor software tweaks with text options and settings but nothing major
Not much but the first two are big plusses to me, and it's nice to have a clearer earpiece. Miss the flash/flashlight and loud speakerphone but I do like having a thin/light phone, finally. We'll see how it holds up. The 9000 was rock solid.
I haven't compared music player functions since I don't use them now that I have my Walkman that I take with me everywhere (which I love).
Obviously not a direct replacement for the 9000, but nothing is. Not sure about the M1 (haven't seen it) - maybe it has more features, but there are reports of flimsy build quality on here (plus the guy at the Sprint store I went to said "good luck finding one"). At least it's thick like the 9000! :p

It's a matter of personal opinion. I think my Katana DLX was a wonderful and fair replacement for my Sanyo 7500. PERSONALLY I think the direct, fair replacement for the 9K is either another 9K or the Sanyo M1, which isn't a fair replacement either because it has no memory card slot.

although I've never owned a 9000, it seems to be better IMO because
1.speakerphone is much better
2.disabled NAI

I love my Sanyo 5600. Basically the exact same as a 9000 except no power vision and I think some clicky differences when you open and close the phone. I've had it for over 2 years now and it's still a beast. Batteries are getting harder to come by. Basically my phone is the jock that kicks everyone elses ass and all the other phones out there are a bunch of wussys that cry home to mommy!

1st, i have to question your age
2nd, its quotes like this that give ky a bad name
3rd, the 9000 can expand up to a 2gb card, the 5600 can not, plus the 9k has alot more internal memory
