Post your score predictions and why.
Ohio State 27
LSU 17
I think Beanie Wells will have another big game. LSU will run some trick plays that will back fire.
Just wanted to do a poll. :)
I would have to give the nod to LSU!

Gotta go with LSU in this one. I will root for OSU, but I don't think this is an even matchup. I have seen plenty from LSU to scare me, but I haven't seen much from OSU to scare me.
I'm not saying I don't want OSU in the game... (having OSU in the Nat Champ game gave Illinoi the Rose Bowl which gave Michigan the Cap One Bowl!) I just think that LSU has the better talent this year. It won't be a blowout, but LSU will win this one.

It's not like the poll changes the outcome of the game!
The polls are just opinions.
LSU crushes, Boekman drops a few balls like during the Michigan game, and the Big Ten cowers under the scrutiny of the media.
Except Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue, and Illinois will all win, of course.

Do you know college football at all? This year saw an astonishing number of upsets, and there's nothing to rule out the possibility of one in this game. "Rolling easily" is not really something ANY team can claim they can do this year.

OSU. Jim Tressel will be prepared. After last year they will be ready, even thought they were never supposed to be this good this year.Yep...Ohio States code to get into there new sports complex this year is 41 14. The Buckeyes lost a Heisman Trophy QB, 2 star receivers a 1,000 yard rusher but yet there offense is only scoring 3 less points then last years offense.
I think Tressel did some things in last years game that he usually doesn't do. Hopefully Wells can take some pressure off Boeckman early in the game. :fingers:

It will be a hard fight down in New Orleans but I have learned a long time ago some one has to be crowned the champion of the world. OSU will have to remain calm and drown out the crowd noise. LSU is basically at home for this game. Who will win is the question every body is wondering I do not think that it will be like the spanking they received last year to the gators but it will be a good game to watch. LSU prevails.

I think the "Speed" thing is not a factor as people make it out to be. I mean it's not like Stanford has a lot of speedy guys and they beat USC this year. The Buckeyes could surprise people and spread LSU out then once that's going good give them some beanie. lol
OSU video on "Speed" and yes I know osu is 0-8 against ssc teams in bowl games.

I don't know about that. Being in New Orleans this will be a distinctly Home Field advantage for LSU. LSU will be able to bring all of their Hard Core fans, casual fans and just pure locals who will root for the local team. OSU will bring its hard core fans and some casual fans, but very little local support.
Its similar to Big Ten going to the Rose Bowl... it seems that every year it is a significant majority of local fans and its a cross town trip for USC.
There is a good corolary story about West Virginia on ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls07/news/story?id=3171541
The gist is WV may have to pony up one million in unsold tickets just because it is far enough away that many fans won't take the time for the trip. Now OSU is not West Virginia but it is still a long trip from Columbus to New Orleans and many fans will just stay at home and watch on their own big screen at home.
tbakergobuck
12-29-2007, 12:51 PM
Not to mention some Ohio State fans won't be making the trip because of what happened last year and or they just went last year. I guess one good thing is tickets are a little cheaper this year. I would love to go but can't get the time off work.

I'll admit I am a Buckeye fan, but even through non rose-colored glasses, I will still go with OSU. I think last years game and being in an underdog position will certainly have the boys in scarlet playing with an added chip on their shoulder. Tressel beat Miles 3 years ago when he was at Oklahoma State and I am confident he can do it again. He is a much better coach, and would never lose to a Kentucky team that may get beat by a Florida State team with most of their starters gone!
Long post, but Go Bucks!

I don't see how tOSU can win this game. I watched USCTrojans front flip, run past and destroy Illinois. The same Illinois team that beat tOSU. Now, I don't think LSU is as good as USC but they are almost as good. This game should be a little closer than the USC/Illionis or UGA/Island College but there is no way LSU is going to lose. LSU D is not only fast, but big and strong.

LSU's defense gave up 40+ to Kentucky and Arkansas. I know it wasn't great weather conditions but Michigan didn't even have 100 yds total offense against Ohio State. Illinois did beat Ohio State by 7 points but let's not forget that USC lost to Stanford. lol

Ohio State and LSU are similar "power" teams so I doubt the "speed" will be as big as a factor as many think it will be. In 1934 the SEC became the first conference to ever have two teams win bowl games in one season. In 1942 we became the first conference to ever win three bowl games in one season. In 1962 we became the first conference to ever win four bowl games in one season(I think you know where I'm going with this).
In 1983 the SEC became the first conference to ever win five bowl games in a single season.Last year(2006) we won six bowl games.....the first time any conference had ever done that and we equaled that this year. Can we become the first conference to ever win SEVEN bowl games in a season? Can we do it this year?

LSU doesn't run the WVU/UF spread type offense in the sense that they don't run it as much from the spread or use the read as a staple of their offense. However, they do like to spread the field with 3+ WR sets and both Flynn and Perriloux can run the ball quite effectively.
LSU's D is a lot different from UF's D last year so you really can't compare the two. Florida D from last year was almost a carbon copy of the 2001 Miami's D. Speed, speed and more speed with a couple of 290+ guys clogging the middle when they weren't in jail. LSU's D is a lot bigger and physical and much more complex. UF pretty much ran a rudimentary cover 1 man and chase the qb with blitzes. LSU has a lot more scheme and disguise when compared to UF's D from last year.
The X-factor should be Perriloux. tOSU has seen plenty of fast guys before so Holliday and his 9.9 100 shouldn't be too big of an issue but rather Perriloux sub 4.6 40 with a cannon for a arm. Perriloux is just a faster more athletic JaMarcus Russell. You really can't say he's a black version of Tebow or a poor man's Vince Young as he is much more comfortable passing the ball than either of those two. However, he also has wheels to go when he has to

9 minutes to go and will be Buckeyes ball after touchback trailing 17-31. They had two scores in the first quarter in nearly 3 minutes so I still have hope. Not to take anything away from a great LSU team, but OSU players are beating themselves up with all these absolutely asinine mistakes and penalties. Without them, this game would be a lot closer IMO, but I won't dwell too much on the what-if's because it could easily go both ways, and honestly winners don't make these kinds of mistakes, esp. this many.

Oh well congrats to LSU. I'm not really disappointed... the way the chips fell this season, OSU ended up in a much better position than expected. I'll take a loss in the NC to a great team over a 9-3 or 8-4 season ending in a non-BCS bowl if that.
Next year will be better for the Buckeyes I think. More development, more experience for the players that stay. They will earn a top 10 ranking rather than find themselves there due to a bunch of upsets from teams ranked higher than them. I'm hoping they can get a commit from Pryor because dude is a straight beast. If not, I don't really want them to continue with Boeckman. Guy's like a 40 yr old 10th year senior and still doesn't know what to do in the pocket under pressure. Of course I don't blame him, he was benched most of the time 3rd stringing to Troy Smith and Justin Zwick. If anything I hope they concentrate on this Henton guy who is a Freshman and a dual threat QB.

I think OSU will be as good if not better next year then they were this year only if what you (flipn0tic) said happens. The SEC & Big Ten are the two best conferences in college football in my truthful honest option. LSU will do well next year but with out Bo as the defensive coach it might be hard. Pryor is almost certain going to OSU. If he doesn't end up at tOSU, hello Michigan for him. OSU might be good next year, but everybody in the country is going to be loaded. Georgia, I hear, returns just about everybody. Texas has Muschamp as a DC so that is going to be a better D. Their offense can score, just sometimes not 50 points to beat a team. Oklahoma is going to be there and of course, USC with their sick, sick roster full of 5 star recruits.

Rivals.com 2008 Preseason Top 25: Jan. 8
1. USC (11-2)
Putting USC at the top is a safe pick because the Trojans annually win their conference, earn a BCS bid and play their best at the end of the season.
2. Georgia (11-2)
Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will give the Bulldogs one of the nation's top quarterback/tailback duos.
3. Ohio State (11-2)
The Buckeyes' title hopes could depend on whether potential first-round picks Vernon Gholston, James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins stay in school.
4. Oklahoma (11-3)
Quarterback Sam Bradford will try to build on his outstanding freshman campaign while leading a team that could return as many as 17 starters.
5. Missouri (12-2)
The Tigers should return three 2007 Rivals.com All-America selections in quarterback Chase Daniel, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and free safety William Moore.
6. Florida (9-4)
You know that offense will rack up some points, but the Gators' defense must get a whole lot better.
7. West Virginia (11-2)
The Mountaineers hope the expected returns of Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine on offense will compensate for heavy graduation losses on defense.
8. LSU (12-2)
The Tigers lose tons of talent on both sides of the ball, but they have plenty of former four- and five-star prospects ready to replace them.
9. Auburn (9-4)
Auburn's biggest losses are on the sideline, as they must adjust to a new offense and find a replacement for departed defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.
10. Clemson (9-4)
With so much talent back on offense and defense, the Tigers can't come up short in a big situation again. Can they?
11. Kansas (12-1)
The Jayhawks could be even stronger than they were this season. They'll need to be better now that they no longer avoid Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech.
12. BYU (11-2)
If the Cougars beat Washington and UCLA in September, they might not lose all season.
13. Virginia Tech (11-3)
The Hokies' hopes of contending for anything beyond an ACC title rest on whether cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Victor Harris return to school.
14. Texas (10-3)
The Longhorns are banking on Will Muschamp's arrival to boost a defense that struggled up until its bowl game this season.
15. Wisconsin (9-4)
The Badgers have a big question mark at quarterback, but they look solid just about everywhere else.
16. Illinois (9-4)
Rashard Mendenhall's decision to enter the NFL Draft will make it tougher for the Illini to prove they're not just a one-season wonder.
17. Texas Tech (9-4)
The Harrell-to-Crabtree combination will give Big 12 defensive coordinators plenty of sleepless nights next season.
18. Oregon (9-4)
The Sun Bowl proved how dangerous this team can be if it gets consistency from its quarterback, but the Ducks must go on the road to face USC, California, Arizona State and Oregon State.
19. Arizona State (10-3)
Rudy Carpenter returns to work behind a retooled line that has to do a better job of protecting him.
20. Penn State (9-4)
The last time Penn State had a quarterback as run-oriented as Daryll Clark, Michael Robinson led the Nittany Lions to an Orange Bowl title.
21. Tennessee (10-4)
Uncertainty at quarterback and offensive coordinator prevents us from ranking the Vols any higher.
22. USF (9-4)
The offense should be better than this season's, but the Bulls will have a tough time replacing cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams.
23. Michigan (9-4)
The Wolverines could have some growing pains as they adjust to new coach Rich Rodriguez and his spread offense.
24. South Carolina (6-6)
This is a leap of faith considering how the Game****s ended 2007, but we're guessing South Carolina should have one of the nation's most improved teams.
25. Wake Forest (9-4)
Jim Grobe's decision not to go to Arkansas assures that Wake Forest once again will have the coaching edge in just about every game it plays next fall.

"Saban recruited 17 of the 22 starters for LSU last night and they clearly outclassed OSU (in talent level anyway) from half way through the first half forward.
I can't wait for that kind of talent here at Alabama."

"No, when Bama hired Saban they retroactively counted his championship at LSU as number 13. This makes number 14."

I rooted for the Big Ten too, though not Ohio State as Ohio State, if you understand what I mean.
And I think Florida will finish in the top 10 next year.

Congrats to LSU. LSU had some well designed plays which Ohio State's defense didn't have a clue what they were doing. I think it might be time for a new defensive coordinator at Ohio State. It probably wouldn't have mattered but Ohio State needed to score more points in the 1st quarter when LSU came out dazed and confused. That blocked FG was big which I thought Tressel should have went for it because our kicker has been blocked a few times this year. I don't understand why Ohio State didn't throw more screens or at least something different then Wells up the middle. Ohio State aided in their own demise by committing a spate of personal-foul penalties (7-83).:td: I don't know how the Ohio State player didn't block that LSU punt. It didn't really matter but I thought the LSU sack when they almost ripped Boeckmans head off on 4 down, could have been a personal foul. For some reason I think the NFL rules protect there QB's more.
I realize the Big Ten is not as good as the sec but it's not Ohio State's fault that lately they haven't been challenged all that much with conference play. Hopefully other Big Ten teams get better so that will make Ohio State better.
I agree flip Ohio State should be better next year even if a few of them leave for the NFL. Heck no one thought Ohio State would be back in the National Championship game this year. I think Boeckman could be a good QB but I think most people prefer a dual threat type QB (Henton). One good thing for Ohio State is that next season people can't say that Ohio State doesn't play anyone because they play USC Sept 13. If they win that game they can start gaining back some respect.
All in all I think most college football fans would love for there team to win 30 games out of there last 33, 3 Consecutive Conference Championships, 3 National Championship Games in 6 years, not to mention beating Michigan 6 out of the last 7. :D Go Buckeyes!

i was cheering for the OSU the whole way (Big Ten pride)....
this is why they need the +1 system, so the big ten has some chance to redeem itself...all we are going to hear next year is how the SEC is the most dominant conference in the world
Yea I'm sure we'll hear it all (SEC is the best CFB conference, SEC dominates all, SEC is better than the NFL...), but we need to keep those SEC sycophants honest... they have a 9-9 bowl record against the Big Ten over the past 5 or so years. If the SEC is so dominant, why can't they beat us all the time... remember that the Big Ten is 'over rated' and 'weak'.
As for the Plus one system... I like it. To bad the Big 10 and Pac 10 are standing in the way. I can understand their position... to give up the Rose Bowl and its 100+ year history is a bitter bill to swallow, but to move on to a true champion we have to give away some of the past. I also like it because it will eventually lead to a 8 team playoff, and finally a 16 team playoff.
...I realize the Big Ten is not as good as the sec but it's not Ohio State's fault that lately they haven't been challenged all that much with conference play. Hopefully other Big Ten teams get better so that will make Ohio State better...
I disagree with your first point. The Big Ten is just as good as the SEC. Bowl records prove it, head to head comparos prove it, national championships prove it. Was the SEC better than the Big Ten this year? I would begrudgingly say yes (the only measure we have is head to head and they got our number 2-1 in bowl games). But they are not better over the long haul (or even the short haul).
I also disagree with your reasoning (OSU is good, but Big Ten is bad, if Big Ten gets better it will make OSU better). If the Big Ten is bad, then OSU's only true test was LSU (non conference proved nothing this year). If that is the case, then it looks like OSU was a bad team.
Now I don't agree with this logic as I believe OSU had a very good team this year. Their pedigree is just fine; Quality wins at Washington, at Purdue, over Michigan State, at Penn State, over Wisconsin, and at Michigan. Their only loss? against a very much improved Illinois team.
To continue the point if the Big Ten 'improves' OSU must continue to improve and keep up. Keep an eye on Wisconsin, Illinois, Penn State, Michigan State, Purdue, Iowa and of course Michigan. And we still can't overlook Indiana (lets just not mention Northwestern or Minnesota for this discussion).
LSU is good and LSU is mighty, and of course LSU is the champion but they don't have that much better of a pedigree... Quality wins at at Miss State, over VaTech, over South Carolina, over Auburn, over Tennessee. Close wins over Florida, and at Alabama. Losses? Kentucky and Arkansas.
...All in all I think most college football fans would love for there team to win 30 games out of there last 33, 3 Consecutive Conference Championships, 3 National Championship Games in 6 years, not to mention beating Michigan 6 out of the last 7. :D Go Buckeyes!
Yes.. everyone would like to have that record against Michigan :D

Oh really? OSU wouldn't be 11-2 in the SEC? I would take OSU over Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. I obviously concede LSU, and I believe it would be a good game against Georgia. If Georgia would win, that would put OSU 11-2 in the SEC.
alabama is 2-0 against osu, both both games, '78 and '95
And lets not forget that Alabama is 1-2 against Michigan (GO BLUE!)

After listening to all the SEC crap I start to believe it but this is a good article explaining that there good but not the Goliath some make it out to be.
The other day, like millions of Americans, I watched college football's national championship game. Alas, I must have been watching on a broken TV.
I saw a team, Ohio State, outgain its opponent by 2 yards per play. I saw that same team lose anyway because its opponent, Louisiana State, played a much more disciplined, fundamentally sound game.
I saw LSU commit only one turnover while Ohio State essentially committed four: three that were official and one on a roughing-the-punter penalty that allowed LSU to keep the ball. I saw a Buckeyes field-goal attempt blocked. I saw Ohio State commit five -- yes, five -- personal fouls.
Based on all that, I had no doubt that LSU deserved to win.
Now, two days later, I'm still annoyed by that stupid broken TV. Apparently, I didn't see the same game as many of my colleagues around the country. They saw:
1. Conclusive proof that the Big Ten's best teams do not have as much talent as the best Southeastern Conference teams.
2. Evidence that Ohio State, which got creamed by Florida in last year's title game, does not belong in any championship game. The Buckeyes, they say, are an inferior team that steamrolls a weak conference every year, simply because the Buckeyes have almost learned to run on two feet while the rest of the Big Ten still crawls on all fours.
Well now. Maybe they are right. The SEC, after all, is 11-4 in Bowl Championship Series games and the Big Ten is 8-9.
But I don't think they are right.
I think they have all bought into the SEC Myth.
Before I explain the SEC Myth, let me explain what the SEC Myth is not. If you think the SEC is usually the best conference in the country, that is not the SEC Myth. That's a perfectly reasonable, rational opinion.
No. The SEC Myth is the argument that the SEC is far superior to other conferences; that it is the best league in the country every year; that the best SEC teams are always better than the best Big Ten teams; and that the SEC is always deeper than the Big Ten.
The SEC Myth states that Ohio State does not have the talent to beat teams such as Florida and LSU.
You probably know some SEC Mythologists. They are all over the place -- except, apparently, in the NFL.
Since 2000, NFL teams have drafted 59 Ohio State players. Twenty-eight were first-day picks -- guys drafted in the first three rounds.
No SEC team can match that. Not one.
The top talent producer in the SEC (by draft picks) is Tennessee, which has had 50 players chosen and 27 on the first day.
Since 2000, the 11 Big Ten teams have produced an average of 26.8 draft picks per school. The 12 SEC teams have produced 27.3 picks per school. That is half a player per school over an eight-year period. So it's basically a wash.
Over those eight years, the average SEC team has produced 12.6 first-day draft picks. The average Big Ten team has produced 10.6. In other words, the typical SEC team has produced one extra first-day pick every four years compared with a typical Big Ten counterpart.
Does that sound like a huge talent gap?
Did you know that Michigan State, a second-tier Big Ten team since 2000, has produced as many NFL draft picks (28) as SEC power Auburn? Hey, it surprised the heck out of me. But it's true. (All draft stats are courtesy of drafthistory.com.)
Propagators of the SEC Myth point out that Ohio State is 0-9 against the SEC but fail to mention that Michigan's Lloyd Carr was 5-2 in bowls against SEC teams. (This lends a rock-paper-scissors quality to the discussion: The SEC beats Jim Tressel, Tressel beats Carr, and Carr beats the SEC.)
SEC Mythologists don't mention that the top three teams in the Big Ten all played road games this bowl season: Ohio State faced Louisiana State in Louisiana, Illinois faced Southern California in southern California, and Michigan faced Florida in Florida.
The logic behind the SEC Myth is self-perpetuating. When Kentucky beats LSU, it is held up as proof of SEC depth. When Northwestern beats Michigan, people say the Big Ten is weak.
If you believe in the SEC Myth, you believe that SEC teams face an unfair path to get to the national championship game because their conference is so demanding that it's almost impossible to get through it unscathed.
But if you believe that, you have to ignore this:
The Big Ten and SEC play two bowl games against each other every year, in Orlando and Tampa. This is where the conferences send their top two non-BCS teams. If the SEC is really so much deeper, then that conference should dominate those two games.
Yet in the BCS era, the Big Ten has won 11 of those games, the SEC nine.
Remember: In that era, the Big Ten has sent 17 teams to BCS games, while the SEC has sent 15. Three times, the Big Ten sent its third- and fourth-place teams to Florida to play the second- and third-place teams from the SEC. The SEC only had to deal with that once.
Anyway, congrats to Louisiana State, the 2007 BCS champion.
And congrats to the SEC, which -- I mean this sincerely -- is probably the best conference in America, by a small margin.
