yep title says it, i turned my phone off, plugged it in via usb and was able to pick up a satellite signal using both google maps and Windows live search
so it may be A-Gps but its the better form of agps that can also function as standalone gps as well
i picked up 8 satellites from my apartment too

put your phone in airplane mode and see if it still gets a gps signal

thats what i did, it was in airplane mode, plugged into my pc for data connectivity (because google maps and wls still need data to load the maps)

what do you mean it was plugged into your PC? Did your PC have a bridge to send data to your phone? I don't understand that.

When WM devices are plugged into a PC, they get all their data from the PCs internet connection, not the phone service.

and also contrary to popular belief, agps because of the tower assistance is more accurate then normal gps
just though i would state that fact

Whats a agps? how is it different from a regular gps?
So this GPS in the Q9C is not dead on accurate with in a couple of feet? isn't that the standard for regular gps units?
Im sorry... i have no idea about these devices...

Will this gps in the Q9C be able to find a signal in the middle of a UTAH?? or Montana??? or does it need EVDO to be present?

Gps is affected by the following
Ionospheric effects ± 5 meter
Ephemeris errors ± 2.5 meter
Satellite clock errors ± 2 meter
Multipath distortion ± 1 meter
Tropospheric effects ± 0.5 meter
Numerical errors ± 1 meter
so it can be off by up to 11meters or so if conditions affect it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS#Accuracy_and_error_sources
where agps i dont have similar data but
"Some A-GPS solutions require an active connection to a cell phone (or other data) network to function, in others [2] [3] it simply makes positioning faster and more accurate, but is not required."
"An A-GPS receiver can address these problems in several ways, using an Assistance Server:
* The Assistance Server can locate the phone roughly by what cell site it is connected to on the cellular network.
* The Assistance Server has a good satellite signal, and lots of computation power, so it can compare fragmentary signals relayed to it by cell phones, with the satellite signal it receives directly, and then inform the cell phone or emergency services of the cell phone's position.
* It can supply orbital data for the GPS satellites to the cell phone, enabling the cell phone to lock to the satellites when it otherwise could not, and autonomously calculate its position.
* It can have better knowledge of ionospheric conditions and other errors affecting the GPS signal than the cell phone alone, enabling more precise calculation of position. (See also Wide Area Augmentation System)
so in theory because its using cell towers and cpus to do some of the calculation certain conditions that affect GPS dont affect aGPS"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS
so when your using satellite and cell towers you get a more accurate signal

it does not need any coverage to locate just an active gps satellite signal and in such case either an extra data source such as a PC or maps preloaded onto the device (such as im getting mapopolis and US maps which ill load onto a separate 1gb card to have for situations where i dont have cell coverage and want gps navigation)

There u go Brett... u have hit this one out of the park... THAT was the answer that I was looking for :)
Gracias amigo :)
Now only if I could find these maps somewhere... hehe how much do they cost?

Very nice. I did play with this a bit today driving home from the football game. Worked will for me with google maps. I'll have to look into having maps. I wonder if they would fit into a 512 card since I have an extra one laying around.

with both tom tom (which i couldnt get to work anyways) and mapopolis the maps for the US were 1gb, but if you just want in-state maps you should be able to get it to fit on a 512 card

That is very interesting. I didn't know you could do this. I was debating between the Touch and the Q9c, and the GPS features on the Q9c seem much more solid than the "Rev A + GPS" vapor from the Touch/Mogul camp.
