Ok i am just wondering, i was told several weeks ago that if my M1 came down with a terminal illness and i had to get b replacement that i would not be able to get another M1. is this true? i am in a position to get another model but am not sure what would be comprable if i were to use insurance benefits. also opinions on what would be a good next phone for me coming from this phone would be great. i have really liked the m1 but i do kinda like some of the treo type handsets out there. i JUST have not had the opportunity to have in hand and play around with any of them.so any thoughts would be appreciated!thanks :)

I am considering getting this phone because I heard some good things about it, but I don't no many details about it.
1. Can you use animated gifs as wallpapers?
2. Can you send and receive text messages while roaming?
3. Can you use the internet on the phone while roaming?
4. Does the camera take good quality pictures, and videos?
5. Do you have to buy a cord to load songs and videos?
6. How does this phone compare to the sanyo 5600 and 9000

i have 2 questions:
1) how can i transfer/copy my contacts to my PDA through BT or otherwise? i have a lot more contacts on my phone than i have on my PDA.
2) is there a way to upload my voicemail greeting, as opposed to the traditional "speaking into the microphone" bit? i have a couple of recordings i want to use as a greeting, but when i listen to them they sound horrible. when someone calls i want the greeting to sound like the actual recording, not like i'm in a hall.

Is there a way to make the media player be full screen and/or sideways while in the browser? I am using the Orb software to share videos over the internet to my phone but the media player always comes up with the postage stamp sized window and a big ol' border.
If you haven't tried http://orb.com you really should. I can play all my mp3s and videos streaming to the M1. Wicked little phone!

Hi Chartung13!
You probably see this question alot. Sry if its a noob question.
Do you know how to backup contacts onto the pc with the Sanyo M1? Hopefully without having to buy software from some 3rd party company. Looks like Bitpm doesnt support the M1. I've been searchin all over online, but everywhere is buy software or its very hard to find threads that talk about it.
Even on sprintusers too. I even tried Handset ManagerV9.5, but it looks like it still wont connect. I dont have a way to use bluetooth card or anything either. :-(
Can anyone out there help?

The free phone to pc via cable option is not so "straight forward".
Search the forums for "QPST" - you use it can access further down in the phone's filesystem....You just need to know what you are doing when you use it...
Just out of curiosity- why not just get you a usb bluetooth dongle? You can pick them up for about around $10 bucks shipped - most of the time....(for example - this one is $6 until 2/15 (http://www.meritline.com/usb-bluetooth-v12-wireless-dongle-blue.html)....

Yeah I've had the same experience as you with BitPim. As the the Bluetooth method it was my understanding that the OBEX profile had to be there to do file transfer to a PC, which the M1 does not have the profile. At the very least I have had no luck being able to do access the M1 in any useful way via Bluetooth on all 3 PCs I have tried.

If any of your friends has a phone that can transfer contacts to the computer and has bluetooth, have them transfer theirs, then yours, then put theirs back on. Idk, that seems like the only other choice other than bluetooth
EDIT: Does anyone know if Wireless Backup lets you download the contacts to your computer? that could be an option...

Are you sure you two are using an M1? :) j/K
If I'm not mistaken the PIM transfer for contacts uses OBEX to xfer them.
I don't know about you all, but here's what I did/do with no problems...
1. Pair your phone with your PC Bluetooth dongle (make sure you set your BT device properties so you can find your contacts after uploaded)
2. Go to your M1 contacts, hit "Options"
3. Choose "Send Contact"
4. Choose "Select", then select your contacts OR just choose "All"
5. Choose the PC Bluetooth device you paried with in step 1
6. Hit "Send"
Depending on how you set your security on your PC Bluetooth device, it will automatically xfer over- otherwise you may have to enter your PIN code you used to pair them up.
Other than that, works fine for me on every PC I've paired it with (4 different machines w/ different BT dongles).
"Useful" enough to access your pictures, media, music and voice folders DIRECTLY on your M1. So you can send or receive any items from/to those folders via BT depending on the content type (i.e. mp3 goes to Media folder, .jpg goes to your picture folder).
Not as fast as a cable, but convenient and very do-able.
You cannot access the phone's system folders- so NOT so "useful" in that respect.

Anyone know how the battery life is when using the phone for media purposes? Talking about if one were just playing solely or a combination of MP3s, videos (QVGA .3gp or .mp4), Sprint TV, Sprint Radio, etc? I'm guessing since the streaming services use EV-DO, the battery life will be significantly shorter, but would it bring down the battery life to the talk time (~3.8 hours)?
Didn't find any results in the thread about this after searching, thanks.
sde780
02-24-2008, 08:55 PM
Mine lasts a day tops on an extended battery.
It's been thru a lot, tho, so that may be why. Sometimes if I take the battery out and put it in again, it'll go up a bar or two.
Lot's of other people on this forum say that the battery life isn't too shabby, so I might be just the odd one

Thanks for the quick info. I had another quick question after using the M1 for several hours:
Is there any where to change the full screen orientation when playing videos? Specifically, it would be nice if I could view full screen videos flipped 180 degrees on the default (having it in a left-handed orientation instead of holding the phone in a right-handed orientation), but I have not come across a setting that can do this...if it can be done at all. The reason I ask is because it would be handy if I could play videos with the phone being flush on the other side instead of leaning on the headphone jack. Not deal-breaking, but still.

It could be a couple of things...
Make sure that your BT that you are receiving on is set to "auto accept" or that you have your security set for what you are trying to do. One of the BT dongles I use has a setting for a secure connection every time - which I don't need on since my M1 is the only BT device ever near it...
See if it makes a difference if your M1 BT is set to hidden - even if you've already paired the device. One of the BT devices I've used will ONLY push/pull contacts if I've got my M1 BT visible when requesting to xfer(even if its paired)....goofy...
Also, some of the BT options work differently...it has to with the BT stack/software your device uses. For instance on my kensington BT I can push and pull from outlook- but on a generic BT device, it doesn't have a dll for outlook...
Can you connect via BT and do anything with the media storage of the phone (i.e. open the pictures folder, or media folder and xfer files)?
Or does it just say its paired? Are you sure that your BT device is capable of the BT services you are trying to use from the M1? Have you done anything else with the BT connection you are using other than attempt to xfer contacts?

Its not supported yet- I think that is what started this BT discussion a couple of posts up....
unless they've hidden the list they added the M1 to - on the bitpim site.....
from the bitpim site:
"Why did BitPim fail to detect my phone?
..If your PID/VID is not currently supported (or if you're using Bluetooth), you can still tell BitPim to detect your phone on a specific interface port. This can be done via the Phone Wizard from the BitPim Settings dialog. If that still fails, it means that either your phone is not the same as the model BitPim supports or BitPim code is wrong. In either case,
please report/post your result to the bitpim-devel list. "

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try those suggestions later today when I get home. I do have access to the media drive, and have sent/received mp3s to my phone, as well as taken some off of it for use on the computer. Like I said, I'm still learning the Macbook's Bluetooth options, so I'm not totally familiar with making sure everything is set up properly yet.
Thanks again.

How Do I Move Music files from file manager media playlist to media play my music folder? Sanyo M1

Why would you want them in your Music folder? You'd be limited to the Sprint Music app, which sucks IMO
But uh you connect the usb cable to your computer, set it to mass storage on the phone, and click on my computer. Then you move the files from your media folder to your music folder.

1. I'm not sure if I fully understand this, but are you wanting to get your mp3s into the Media folder? Or into the Playlist subfolder that is in the Media folder? Either way, it should be possible to move files anywhere within those four accessible folders (DCIM, MEDIA, MUSIC, VOICE) using the phone's File Manager.
2. As far as I can tell, playing through the File Manager will not allow for playing multiple things at one time. To get that (and more) functionality, you have to play stuff through the Media Player, which will only list things in the Media folder (not in any subfolders within as far as I can tell - the Playlist folder is for .m3u's).

Hello guys! I'm from Ukraine, so my Sanyo M1 have no Sprint services but i can make calls and can use the phone as modem. I want to ask u some questions:
1. My phone's harware version is 0103 software version - 1.001SP. I want to update them. So does anyone has a higher versions then mine?
2. How can i assign my mp3 as a ringer? Or maybe someone knows how to get access to memory where ringers and tones are stored?
3. does my Sanyo have an GPS reciever or it only has ability to get coordinates from base station(tower)? (coordinates of tower location not phone itself)
Thanks

1. Nope, that's the most recent
2. you'll have to upload them thru an uploader such as rumkin and funformobile
3. GPS works with applications like Telenav or Garmin, which are available for a monthly fee from sprint

Thanks for the few that replied. But Bitpm doesnt seem to support the M1. Just wondering if there is another way. Guess Bluetooth is the easiest.

Not to sound like a jerk but...wow- I bet that was helpful to the original poster.
These forums are only as useful as the information posted in them.
Its obvious they were having trouble with using bitpim and their m1- or they would never have posted it in the first place.
I think what you're trying to say is ..bitpim doesn't support the m1 and you didn't use bitpim to pull them off of your M1 and save as a vcard...
If there really was a way to do it with bitpim perhaps a little more detail might be helpful to the original poster and everyone else that has asked in about 100 other posts... other than just answering "just pull them off the phone".
Three questions to enlighten us all on how you pulled your M1 contacts and saved as a vcard with bitpim:
Which version of bitpim did you use for this feat?
Are you sure you did this with bitpim and an M1?
What steps did you take to accomplish this?

Greetings
Is there a way to make the media player be full screen and/or sideways while in the browser? I am using the Orb software to share videos over the internet to my phone but the media player always comes up with the postage stamp sized window and a big ol' border.
If you haven't tried http://orb.com you really should. I can play all my mp3s and videos streaming to the M1. Wicked little phone!
Cheers!
Mikey-D
how does orb work ?

i used bitpim to pull them off another phone, then i saved them as a vcard and then pushed them onto my m1, now im having alot of trouble removing my contacts since it cant sync to my blackberry pearl via bluetooth, its really aggravating since i dont want to have to manually enter 200+ contacts

Okay that makes sense- thanks for the clarification....you didn't use bitpim with your m1 for contacts because bitpim doesn't support the m1.
As far as your blackberry- have you tried pushing your contacts over to a different bluetooth device (i.e. bluetooth dongle on a pc) then pushing them to your phone?

Forwarding your texts without a screen is a BAD idea. lol
Menu>Down>OK>Down>OK>OK>Right softkey>Down>OK>Down>TYPE IN PHONE NUMBER TO FORWARD TO> OK> LEFT softkey> LEFT softkey
That's to forward the most recent text in your inbox. To forward your second newest text, add a DOWN after
Menu>Down>OK>Down>OK>OK
Have fun!

how to make mass storage work?
I've purchased the proper data cable, selected mass storage in tools, connected the phone to pc. It just says connecting forever, ive left it on connecting for an hour and it still did not isntall the drivers. Just sits there, "connecting".
very annoying. tried on multiple pcs and it does not work. Says device not recognized.

You set it to Mass storage from the phone first, then connect the cable and it should work like a flashdrive, you don't need drivers

yes, thats exactly what i did. maybe the cable i bought is broken?
in either case, bought a bluetooth dongle and am using that instead.
so, a new question arises...
how to add .jar apps to the phone through bluetooth?

you cant, with the m1 the only way to get applications on it is using an uploader or downloading them from a site directly.

I take it by uploader you mean uploading to the internet.
I do not have a Vision plan, and have no intentions of getting one. It is completely pathetic that sprint must resort to such petty measures to squeeze every penny possible. What is the point of having a data cable, or a blue tooth device, if it is completely worthless? :frustrate

the usb cable isn't worthless at all, you can throw media on the phone no problem, which is the phone's primary feature. you can put movies, songs, pictures... take them off... that's what its really meant for. they don't want you adding software because it has to be specially written for the phone, and they provide it. otherwise, you could just download the program that someone originally paid for and just throw it on your phone. i have a version of telenav and its the trial but it never expired. i download it to my phone from sprint, and it stays working and i don't pay. i gave my friend my old phone, and she gets to use it w/out getting charged too... i mean, imagine if i could just take that program off the phone and give it to you... or everyone on here... and that's just one example. the phone does what it should, and there's nothing *wrong* with sprint protecting their investment.

for browsing/watching that mobile youtube content i find it best to use the M1's built-in NetFront browser instead of Opera Mini. Once the clip is done it will go right back to the browser where you left off. Since Opera Mini is a separate java app it needs to close before the media player will play.

as the previous post mentioned point your NetFront browser to m.youtube.com to access the mobile version and you should be fine. remember, you do not actually view the videos through either NetFront or Opera Mini. these browsers are just used to locate the content. once you select the video to play, you activate the media player which is separate from the browser.

I transferred a song from computer to phone. Both devices indicated transfer successful. Unable to find though. When going to media player, it seems to keep wanting to connect me to the Sprint music store. I don't want a stinking store. I want to transfer audio files, then play them. Is that impossible? I find the users manual, though lengthy, to be lacking plenty of information.
Anyway, sorry if the question is too dumb. It is sincere, however, as I have been unable to figure this one out. I checked the My Content folder also, where one might expect to find custom stuff ala My Documents. Nothing.

when transfering from pc to m1 be sure to drop your music files in the MEDIA folder. open the Media Player (not 'Music'), and then choose 'Media Listing' and your tracks should be there.

Unable to drag or copy and paste files. So I try Send File To, then choose Bluetooth, then the device. It then offers me no options, only saying it is transferring to FILE MANAGER.
Afterward, unable to find.

Or to be exact, open the phone, press the Menu/OK button, right d pad, then up d pad, then press ok. Press down once, then press ok again, choose your song from there

Only place I can find them is File Manager, then Media. They appear beneath the folder icon. Perhaps there is a clue, in that each of the songs listed has a question mark on the left side.
At any rate, I also uplaoded an audio file, a movie clip recorded on an MP3. It works fine. I am wondering if perhaps the format of my songs is incompatible.
By the way, thanks for the help.

Those songs were RAX, I think, in Real Player format. I transferred some that said MP3 and did manage to get them working. Cool. Also, I found a converter software online that got some others converted, though fails with the RAX junk.
At any rate, I am doing rather well with the uploaded audio stuff, though have found a new issue. Will write of it in the next post.
Thanks.

New problem: While charging, both the screens remain lit up the entire time. What a waste, especially the inside one sitting there sucking up charging power for no reason. And that's with the phone closed even. Oh, same with while playing an audio file from the Media folder. If playing something from the Music folder, the lights do go off though.
Gosh, this phone sure is proving to be an effort figuring out how to operate.
One more: A couple people have complained about the actual phone quality, both while using speaker and regular. Today I called a friend and went back and forth. For her, each sounded fine. I was at her house and traded handsets. Both ways were fine for me also. Still, I did get those two complaints yesterday, one of them from my sister who is on a land-line. Wondering if others have experienced issues.
Also, sooooo much quieter if using Speaker while the phone is open. Too bad they didn't go for the 2-inside, 2-outside speaker arrangement of the Motorola IC-880.

Well at least I know others get to endure the wasted lighting phenomenon. Thanks.
As for speaker volume, I can find that one (though wish it had a volume bar or produced an audible chime). It's the individual on the other end of the phone who is complaining about my voice fading in and out while I talk to them with the my speaker on.
Reading my previous post, I can see how my wording needed more clarity with regard to who was having trouble based on the speaker being used.
I use the speaker on my M1. Person I am talking with complains that while listening to me, the voice tends to fade, going in and out. One of them I know for sure had been using a land line.

I really need to test the phone with more people before reaching any conclusions on that end anyway. As noted, it sounded fine when talking with my friend at her house, both of us taking turns switching phones with the one on speaker. So... time will tell.
At any rate, you and one other person have helped me become a lot more adept at using this thing. So thanks again.
The reason for purchasing is because by Sanyo VM4500 (sometimes called a 5500) broke, leaving me with need to get anything. All the stuff at the store failed my test of worth paying for. Actually, the IC-902 is terrific, though has sucky roaming capability where lots of regular Sprint phones work terrific, including my 4500 and the M1. I also like the Mogul quite fine. But it has no TV capability. Too few of them have MP3 buttons on the cover, which is a feature I think is wayyyy cool.
Therefore, I reverted back to memory, knowing of the M1 and the Samsumg A900, then tossed around deciding. I bid on both at eBay, ending up with the best deal getting the M1. I originally figured to just bide my time till the Instinct became available. But the M1 is taking care of so many needs that I just might keep it and wait for the Instinct to go down in price maybe 6 months from now.
Oooh, just noticed Sprint is mentioning the Instinct on their website for the first time, right up top in a picture and mentioning a competition with the I-Phone. Guess they feel pretty good about the comparison.

You can attempt to "reset" by deleting the device from the detected/trusted device in the blue tooth area of the M1 - or the PC/MAC bluetooth settings.
Just delete it and then re-discover/pair it again...just remember your code this time! :)

if your pairing to a headset it tends to be 0000, if your paring with another phone the PIN is something you and the person your pairing with choose when pairing (to keep it simple i usually choose 0000 or 1234) and both you and the person pairing enter the same pin on both devices.
