View Full Version : New Ringer SMS Alerts from DBRingers

Ok, I've been working on a new feature on DBRingers that I now have in beta form. I'm not sure if I want to totally go public with it yet, but a friend has been asking for this feature for a while so I figure what the hell. Its instant SMS alerts whenever a new ringer is added to the site. The reason I'm hesitant to do this is I'm sure that at some point down the road someone is gonna sign up and turn around and accuse me of text spamming them; I've already been accused of stuff like that in the past (I guess from people sending ringers to their friend's phones without warming, I dunno…), so I know this is could open up the door to more of that foolishness. Anyhow, I'm posting here because 1) I was testing the waters to see if there's a real want for this type of feature, and 2) to see if the service works as expected.
The sign up process is easy, you go to a page and put in your number to sign-up. Then in order to prevent people being unwillingly signed up a confirmation text gets sent to that phone number with a activation link. When you click on the link in the text messages it goes off to my site and validates your phone model and then finishes the registration for that phone number.
Then whenever a ringer is added to the site you will instantly receive a notification with a link to the ringer.
Since I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link directly to my site and its sign-up form please PM me if you'd like to help me test out this feature.
Also any feedback on how useful you think this is would be great. Do you think it would be cool? or would you rather just check the site on your own or use one of the existing "stay-updated" features like the RSS feed or the MSN LIVE alerts.

yeah, point taken. i've done a bunch to make it work with blackberries; and i'd like extend the site's support to palms and treos too but dont' know enough about them yet. the hardest part so far is it seems very hard to detect what type of device it is. PDAs that run Windows Mobile seem to report themselves as just being Windows browsers; so they look just like a PC from the server side; which makes it impossible to do special handling for them.
perhaps if i get some Treo and other PDA users willing to help and try stuff out for me i can get them to work like BlackBerries (Which i only got working because a friend of mine has one)
