well you know my opinion on the Q, think the reverse on the Q9C IMO
so far i love it the screen is great, that backlight sensor was an added improvement the keyboard is nice to type on (although i wish they would of chosen soft rubber but it will smooth out over time) and the GPS oh the gps, so nice to finally have it on the a pda, something i have wanted for well forever lol

i've had my Q9c for about two weeks now and have just started to notice the dust collection under the screen at the bottom right corner. it is not as small a a fingernail like others have reported. it kind of takes up the entire lower corner area from the edge to about where the right softkey ends and the d-pad starts. what I want to know is if sprint will replace the phone, since I have the TEP plan? any advice on how to correct the dust problem would be greatly appreciated.

Noticed the same thing with mine after only a week. Started out with just a speck or two lower right side but is growing in size quickly. Hope it can by fixed not really wanting to trade it in.

I made a thread about this with my original Q which I noticed dust under the screen kinda quick but I just tried not to look for it. I had real bad dust issues with my LG 535 and Sprint had no problem replacing it twice. It happened a third time and a rep let me swap it for a comparable phone. Insurance probably helps but I would just be carefull where you put phone. I wonder if it comes through the ear piece holes? I doubt I would let a tech take it apart and clean it out if they even can.

I was thinking it may be coming through at the wheel or button below it. Bad thing is that if they exchange it ya gotta redo all your progs and configs. Not as easy as it was with dumb phones. lol.

I've just learned to not put a magnifying glass up to the display looking for it. lol
I guess we need to ***** and complain about the Q's dust issues like we complained about the battery issues. :thought:

That may be the hot tip lol. Still it doesn't effect my opinion of the Q9. It really is an awesome phone. Dust seems to be an issue with most phones today. You're right about that. If it gets too bad Ill exchange it but it would have to really bother me. Not to that point yet...........
I wouldn't put up with a phone that did that, but that's just my opinion. It would drive me crazy. I was debating whether to get this or a Centro, I posted this same question on the Centro boards and none of the users had any problems with dust getting under the screen. Needless to say this swayed my decision.

I think I would rather deal with a few dust particles under the display then a creaky phone. I had 3 centro's and all of them creaked. I put a business card under the battery cover and helped some.
Now this on the other hand is unacceptable. lol

You sure that's dust under the screen or did you just forget to blow the dust off that pic. Seriously though the Centro is a good phone but after using the q9 it just wasn't for me. Like I said if it gets noticable Ill just exchange it through the store or the warranty.

As a follow up to my previous post, has anyone successfully put in a warranty claim re the dust issue? At first, the dust was only about a fingernail's size. Now it is seeping up to the middle of the screen! I've only had the phone about 6 weeks! Normally wouldn't really mind, but I dropped $300 on this phone and I would expect better quality.

I have the same dust issue with my phone; I'm wondering if the Sprint repair centers can fix it without doing an exchange.

I just got my new Q9c for only a week (had to exchange my old one because the backlight was faulty), and there's already dust under the screen. I put my phone in my pocket most of the day, but I make sure there's no lint in my pocket. It has only been a week :( . I took it to several Sprint Repair centers and they all turned me down. They don't open PDA's blah blah. Insurance wasn't helpful either as this is not "defective" but rather wear/tear....
Sighs. I'm still within my 30 days so I'm gonna keep exchanging phones for now, but with me SOL later on.
I suggest you guys all email Sprint about this dust problem. Hopefully they do a recall or will pay more attention to it so the next batch will be better.

Returning mine tomorrow to Best Buy for Dust. I'm noticing it starting more around the lower left hand corner and slowly creeping outward (some reports have it coming from the righ tside). Since I'm returing it, I stuck an exacto knife under the left softkey and found it unsually easy to pull up the screen cover(Slightly). You guys notice that this keeps happening in the lowercorners? Coincidence? Maybe it's comming through the speaker area, but I have a feeling that it's coming from the area around the soft keys.
That looks like were the adhesive is the thinest and could explain why it takes a week to a month to start showing up in the lower corners? AKA dust gets under the softkeys while in your pocket, then by hitting the softkeys it gives a little allowing a slight gap in to the screen which lets the crap in. - Think I'm thinking about this too much
Has anyone had one for over a month without dust now? I wonder if you could find a sleeve for the phone that would lip over the screen slightly.
Motorola and sprint need to get this fixed. The Q9 is great for the $, but we don't want to have to keep returning the thing every couple months?!?

Thats the problem I had. No place around here would do anything about it. Even at a Sprint service center. I could have dealt wit a little dust in the corner but it kept growing and growing. Loved the Q9 but the dust was a real bummer. Hope they can resolve it or at least train techs to clean it. Oh well lovin the touch..... :D

we have both a touch (wifes) and a Q9 and there is many differences, but the dust is really not that big a deal, certainly overshadowed by these things... speakers/Q, the size/touch, overall coolness/touch, battery life/Q, gps/Q, screensize/touch, touchscreen/touch, full qwerty/Q.... personally I dig the Q, but the touch gets props. with a slim battery the Q is same as the touch(bat life), I do wish the screen was bigger on the Q but i cant get into typing on the touch....I REALLY dig the Q's speakers, you can actually use this as a portable media device w/o headphones and you can make ringers to wake the dead....:headbang2

Getting in and getting out are two totally diff things. Imagine one of them piggybanks that hold your coins. You can easily put coins in, but when you try to get them out it's hard.
-----------
I think with the Q9c, it seems like there's the LCD screen and then there's another protective screen on top. So there's a pocket of air in between where the dust lays. It seems like that's what I'm looking at.

Do you carry your phone in your pocket? In order to see the dust, you have to look at the screen when it's off at an angle under a neon light or sunlight.
No dust under my screen, but I noticed the light sensor on the front has a bunch of dust.

No dust under my screen, but I noticed the light sensor on the front has a bunch of dust.I forgot to mention that I had dust in there as well. I would think if it's in there it's a matter of time to get to the display. Also if there is a noticeable amount of dust blocking the sensor I wonder if it will affect the sensor working like it's supposed to?
I would imagine if you have a noticeable amount of dust under the display/sensor and your phone is not to old Sprint should swap it out if they can't get the dust out but just don't go there with a attitude about it. Once they swap it out for the dust, if it happens again then I doubt they can say no to swap it out since they swapped it out before but who knows with Sprint.
I know if I get a q9c again I will probably put a small piece of clear tape on the top of the phone where the opening is. Also I might put a piece over the earpiece and poke some holes in it. I doubt anyone will be able to see it but I'll try to prevent the dust issues as much as I can.

The dust is a pain in the ass but I'll keep sending them back until I get one that's not a dust-leaker. At first I was pissed enough over the dust, problems with PRL updates, and problems calling *2 issues to go back to a Touch. But after a week with the Touch (gak! I hate that onscreen keyboard!) I've accepted the Q9c's little quirks and am quite certain the trade-off is a good one. Oh, and did I mention SlingPlayer and YouTube video sucks on the Touch compared to the Q9c???

I used to use the Samsung i500 (palm) and to be honest, I really miss the speed of writing on the touch pad, but have since gotten used to using a keyboard instead. I think your highest criteria should be whether you prefer typing, or are you willing to use a stylus, which will (in my opinion) soon become your preferred method.
I have, however, read threads about how the Q reigns supreme for video and stereo.
tbhausen

I couldn't disagree more. The "keyboard" on the Touch is horrible and that toothpick of a stylus is not fun to use at all. I'd cycle thru Q9c's until you get a good one (there won't be any refurbs in the pipeline for awhile so you may end up with extra accessories for your trouble).

I only notice it in bright day light when the screen is off. It is not enough to effect any of my screens - including a white word doc or email. Man, I love this thing - the kb is EXCELLENT! I don't really want to switch - so, I may live with it for another week and then swap it.
Did you try another one? Or did you just move to...well, whatever you are using now! ;)
And I will also have to say I don't like the cover over the screen and the softkeys. This cover seems to scratch very easily - I already have a few little "knicks" in it. I never had a problem with the old one which was nothing but the glass screen.

As much as I like the q I just really want something different since I've been using the q on/off for over a year now.

Ah! I'm on my second Q9 and I have worse dust with this one then the original one. You guys notice that a majority of the complaints state that its happening on the right side of the screen where it looks like contact area of the screen cover to the phone is the thinest. There absolutely must be some form of a defect with the screens seal to the phone.
FYI - According to the sprint store by me, they will not open up smartphones to clean the screens. If you have TEP they will give you a refurbished phone instead. At this point the Moto is so new that I doubt you'll get a refurb.
I plan on trying to hold out as long as possible to see if newer batches of the moto clear this up. Maybe even a refurbed model might have this corrected in the future as well?!?! Wishfully thinking since I think the refurbs are from people returning within their 30 day period because they don't like the phone or they are having software related issues.
Keep this thread alive and anyone with a moto older then 1 month without dust please post!

Has anyone let Motorola/Sprint know? If so what did they say? You might what to let them know about the dust and soft key threads. Probably won't do any good but at least they will be aware of there design issues.

I would think that with all of the units coming back with an issue ("dust under screen") that this has probably moved back to Moto - however, at what percentage does it start to matter is yet another issue!

There's a link to a Hellomotoq survey over at everythingq. One of the issues listed on the survey is dust so Moto is aware. Everybody fill it out and let Moto know we don't like this dust issue one bit. I did.

I have major dust issues on my Q9c, which is some two months old.
Not having TEP, am I pretty much out of luck and will not be offered a replacement? I am planning to stop by the Sprint Service Center this week but wanted to be more informed...

Yes, it may be difficult to get Sprint to do anything - they may tell you to send it back to Moto. I say "may", cuz ya never know until you try. I went ahead and added TEP last week just for this issue. I'll drop it after 6 months once the "newness" has worn off.

Todd/Indy
I guess I should have clarified, that I meant using the stylus for grafiti, and not teeny, tiny clicking on letters on the keyboard. I would surely agree with that, too. But I used to be a whiz writing with a stylus - much more so than typing on a miniature qwerty.

Even if you have TEP on your phone, wont the Sprint store charge you $50 to replace/exchange the phone. Even if the dust issue is wide spread and known?
I know that my Sprint store here charges for EVERYTHING, even if the phone rep from Sprint tells me they'll do it free. I needed a software update on my A900 that couldnt be done through the phone (some error/sprint problem) and they wanted to charge me $15. Took it to a store 2 hours away (dallas) and they did it on the spot for free.
Also, has anyone noticed that this screen scratches way too easily? My Q was great, it seriously took a fair bit to scratch that screen, this one gets a spec of dust on it, you wipe it off, and you have a perma scratch.

regarding the charging for stuff, was that a corporate store or a third party? I know some third party stores will charge no matter what it is. If it is corporate, they should do the cleaning no problem if you have TEP. At least that has been my experience.

I honestly cant tell the diff between a corp store and a third party store anymore, at least with the store here. All they do is sell Sprint in the store, nothing else... But yet, when I've tried to get things done there before, they act like they are a 3rd party store (like bestbuy or something). So I'm not quite sure what the deal is with them. I would assume that they are a corp store for the reason thats all they sell, and Sprint phone reps point me there. But again, any time I go in there, its like pulling teeth to get anything done, let alone getting it done at no cost.

Well I dropped by my local store today and the tech there had no clue how to go about cleaning it. I got the asst. mgr., who was very nice, but he acted like he had never heard of the issues. They took the phone apart, I could see them do that, but didn't have any idea how to get under the screen. He called another local store that he said has a much bigger dedicated department for repairs and they didn't know how to do it either. He mentioned calling Motorola and see if they could do it. Not really an option as I would guess that Moto would put it back on Sprint, could be wrong.
So, I'm at a loss here. Could try *2 I guess. <shudder at the thought> Anyone locally in Kansas City have any luck either getting it cleaned or swapped out?

I cut a small piece of scotch tape in 1/2 and put it over the top part of the phone over the holster opening. If anything it will prevent dust from getting in there and you can't really see it. I also put a small piece over the long parts of the ear piece opening but took it off because it looked tacky. I was going to poke holes in the tape if I needed to.
I would take a picture of it but I don't have my camera.

However, they scratched up the back of it in the process and I made them replace that part as well. I've been thinking of getting a q for awhile but now with this dust issue I'm not so sure. How bad is the dust with the screen lit up. With the light on, it is hardly noticeable but it also dependent on the amount of dust you have I think. As I have picked up more, it is gradually becoming more noticeable. However, the dust is a minor issue when making pros/cons for the phone. The phone itself is excellent, IMO, and not a deal breaker.

Finally exchanged my Q9C for another one today because of the dust issue. It started really nagging me about a month ago and I was angry at dropping $300 on a phone that had this issue. The Sprint rep actually accused me of dropping the phone in sand which pi$$ed me off but they ended up exchanging.
Hopefully the new one won't have the same problem, although I am not holding out much hope. On a side note, it was nice to see the backlight issue fixed on my new Q9c (the portion at the top of the directional pad is actaully illuminated on the new one)

I believe it's a design defect that affects most q9c; I hope your replacement won't have this issue but I'm pretty skeptical. The dust seems to be getting through the bottom right corner where the right soft key is located.

DON'T try to remove the screen overlay on the Q9c unless you have a replacement!!! The original Q was different... it had a glass screen overlay SEPARATE from the buttons and d-pad. I wrote the tutorial at pdaphone.com and I can assure you, if you try this with the Q9c, you will most likely ruin the overlay since it's plastic and integral with the buttons.

I noticed the red and green keys can allow dust to enter when pressed. Here's how:
If you press too close to the "top" of either key (near bottom edge of screen) you'll feel some internal structure under there. The pressure levers the screen overlay up which can cause a small gap to appear along either edge (adjacent to the chrome bezel). When the screen levers up, this increases the internal volume of the phone, meaning the dusty atmosphere wants to enter (momentary pressure differential seeking equilibrium).
I've been careful to press near the bottom (near keyboard) edge of these buttons. No dust in 2nd Q9c and it's been a few weeks now.

i can buy that.as i had mentioned somewhere in this thread,i had got a dot of water at the lower right of screen when i used some small amount of water to make my screen protector to slide and give time to adjust.the only place i would of had water is at the crome bezel and i was using pressure to get air bubbles out.this would cause the flexing at the suspected problem spot.

I've had my phone since about january 11th, and its primary location is either a pant pocket or wool jacket or hoody pocket (its my mp3 player) and it is still DUST FREE.
I dont want to ever exchange this one, cuz it seems to b great compared to all the complaints. Its my first and only q9c, and i'm loving it...about time for a master reset though. clean sweep

As the previous poster mentioned, the dust is coming through the right soft button area; on my phone I can see the cover is not totally flush over the right soft button area, thus allowing dust to seep through the contact area between the right button and the screen. I think it's either a quality control issue or just a bad design. This is unacceptable for a phone that retails for over $500. Motorola/Sprint should offer a free periodical cleaning of the screen through their service centers, or come up with some kind of long term fix for this problem. Every time I notice the dust I get pissed.:mad:

Well I am another q9c owner that has dust under the screen and the more i keep it in my pocket the more dust seems to accumulate. While inspecting the phone i did notice that the gap between the crome accent and the cover seems to be farther apart on the right side (side were dust is accumulating) than the left side.... mind you this isnt a very noticieable difference. I then performed my own unscientific experiment by blowing in that gap on the right side with my mouth against the gap... air was able to get in and was evident by the moister that came in under the phone, but then went away. I then tried the same thing on the left side and was unable to blow any air under the screen. Im just guessing that there is a defect with how the phones were sealed? who knows....What i do know is i can decided to exchange this for another q9c as i love this phone or just swap it outt for the samsung ace?????????

You can actually just open it up and clean out the dust.....then put a brand new face plate on there.
I bought a new face plate (entire LCD cover to keyboard, and all the way down to the chrome 'trim') and replaced my old one.
I believe that stopped the dust on mine.

I'll be damned! I'd love to buy one of these, remove the foam, and all a little extra sealent around the screen to make sure theres no leaks. I've been taking compressed air and blowing in the cracks around the screen to ride most of the dust but I was looking for a more permanat solution
How did you access the screws? Thanks for the link by the way!

four of the six screws are acessable by taking battery cover off,the top two are acessable by popping up the back above the battery cover using your fingernail (or something scronger if you dont want to break a nail)

Yep it worked perfectly. Here is what I found.
There are 3 screws directly under the battery cover around the edges. There is no screw under the sticker with the IMEI etc..
There is a 2nd cover on the top half of the device, what I did to remove this was gently pry the endges until all 4 corners popped up (using a small jewlers flathead), then with my fingers, I slid the cover toward the top of the device and that removed it. Under that cover was 2 more acrews along the edges.
Once all scres were removed, I genly pried the device apart at the edges, removed the circuit board, then popped the screen out of the front casing. I then used a lint free cloth along with some electronics screen cleaner to wipe the dust off of both the cover and the screen. Repeat the steps to re-assemble and you now have a dust free Q9c.
One note, the screen is held in place with a ribbon cable to the main circuit board, if this comes off, simply pry off the top layer circuit board (it is just plugged into the main board), plug the screen back in and then put the top board back on.

So it comes apart in 3 pieces? The faceplate/keyboard, the LCD screen, and the circuit board/back housing; is this correct?
Do you have to detach the screen/LCD from the board to get to the faceplate?

Yep pretty much 3 pieces like you described.
No you don't have to detach teh screen/lcd however when I was moving it out of the way so I could get to the screen, that is when it came unplugged. If you are careful you can do it without unplugging the screen from the board but if it does come unpluged it is no big deal getting it back together.
The entire process took me about 10 min...

You need a torx screwdriver; you can find these at hardware/electronic stores.

Its going to be a T-6 torx, I believe....it was a pain in the butt to find it cause it was such a small size.
I had to buy an entire set to get that size.
By the way I have an extra screen/keypad cover that I bought, if anyone wants to buy it from me.

I have had my Q9c for about a week now and I already have a few dust particles coming in around the bottom of the screen and more to the left side. I'm a bit disappointed as this is my first smartphone. I keep it in my pocket without any kind of cover for now (waiting on an InvisibleShield complete phone cover in the mail).
Reading over the other posts about taking apart the phone, I started taking a closer look at mine. Once you remove the battery cover, you have 3 of the 5 screws revealed. The other 2 screws are underneath another cover that also covers the camera, flash, and back-side light sensor. This cover slides off just like the battery cover does only in the opposite direction. You slide the battery cover down towards the bottom, so the camera cover slides straight up. The glass that covers the camera & flash is part of this piece.
I plan to try to remove the 5 screws this weekend and take a look at the screen area. At the very least, I'd like to be able to clean the screen area on my own, but maybe I can find a way to seal the screen better to prevent future dust. I'll take detailed pictures of the dis-assembly.

so is there a consensus yet on what the expected result is of taking the Q9 in to a service center (with TEP) and getting it cleaned? I try to stay out of sprint stores because I get mad and frustrated at the lack of interest once its established that im not buying a phone....

I took mine to the sprint service center in Irvine, CA. They cleaned it for free even though I don't have TEP.
The clean-up was not perfect though, I noticed a couple of dust particles in the middle of the screen after I picked up my phone from the service center.
As long as you're under the 1 year warranty period, Sprint should clean the phone for free.

may b interested...PM info like; how old the cover is and how much, etc.
also, is this a whole cover? or just the front faceplate piece? (keypad and scrreen)
btw, had mine since January, still no dust and I keep it in my pocket, had a screen protector on it for all of 2weeks back in early January....
But i've got a couple nicks/scratches on it from some drops...otherwise its held up very well.
p.s: when u take it apart and put together, do u notice any difference? weaker build, looseness, creaking keys, etc?

just found my first bit of dust. got this phone two weeks ago and was worried about dust after reading this thread. I was very careful and made sure to wipe the screen clean a few times a day. today was a sunny day and I noticed some dust on the bottom right of the screen, right next to the back button on the side of the phone. is the dust coming in from the scroll wheel? I also noticed a bit of dust on the light sensor and some dust forming between the keys on the keypad. im really disappointed with this as I love this phone. but I dont have the time to go to the sprint store every 2 weeks to have it cleaned. I had my last phone for almost 2 years and only had a tiny bit of dust after those 2 years. I do keep the phone in my pocket, but there is no dust or lint in my pockets at all. and I don't want to get a belt clip for this huge phone

Might be the invisishield that you have on yours. Did you install it as soon as you got your Q9c or did you wait a little bit?

Have started getting dust in my second phone after 6 or so weeks. Not bad enough where I feel as though I have to get it replaced but there nonetheless. This second phone has dust coming in from the SD Card slot area as opposed to the bottom right portion on my old phone. However, this second phone looks as though it has dust in the light sensor. As a result, the phone does not light up as much as it should when I am in dark areas. What crappy phone quality.
