the 9c has the oz messenger app installed and its free if you don't like that try slick frome lonelycat games

Indeed.

Someone mentioned Slick from lonelycat. I think it's in a free beta status, which means it'll eventually cost you, but it might fill your needs for now. I've never used it, so I can't tell you anything about it. I think it's an integrated client for IM and text if I read their blurb accurately.

OctroTalk is free. All 5 of the major IM networks + free GoogleTalk/VOIP from phone.

edit- sorry got confused by all of the IM discussion, this doesn't work with SMS.
