One of the phones in my account is being used by a friend of mine. He called me a few times the last month to tell me that he had a few incoming calls and that when he looked at the screen it was displaying his own number. How could this be?

Not possible it was the full number with area code.
If the incoming call was a friend, then they "spoofed" the number.
If you attempt to spoof with area code and number the call will go directly to voicemail.

that will happen if your checking VM and someone calls and interrupts your checking of it, then when you hangup your VM calls you back and amazingly with your own number
theres also a couple other events where it occurs, ask your friend if call waiting was involved chances are thats the culprit
