View Full Version : Just ordered a Q9C, still thinking about the Touch

Hey all, I jsut ordered a Q9C online after playing with one in the store today. Though I really thought it was cool and worth a shot (clearly, I ordered one...) I still can't help but think about the touch some more. There were instantaneous things I loved and hated about the touch (IE- the small form factor I loved, the lack of a keyboard, I hated)... does anyone who's owned both the Old Q and the Touch have any comments or thoughts?

I went from the Q (which I liked) to the Touch, with the thought that I'd return the Touch for the Q9c if I didn't like the lack of hardware keyboard.

The Touch is the best phone I've ever owned, and I'm not going to return it.

Why the touch? Just windows mobile 6? what makes it so much better?

touch screen, wm6pro, and touchscreenless smartphones for some reason to me just feel bogged down not only by there capability but software wise the selection just isnt there and the Q just overall left a sour taste in my mouth

Why the touch? Just windows mobile 6? what makes it so much better?

Q9c is also WinMo 6 (Standard).

Believe it or not, the Touch has better earpiece volume and reception than my Q did -- so it's actually better as a phone. I also like the bigger screen, and I'm appreciating the good touchscreen (much better than my old 6700). I can type faster on the Touch than I could on the Q, because the Q's keyboard always missed letters and couldn't keep up with me (I realize this issue is resolved with the much better keyboard on the Q9c). The Touch is blazing fast with plenty of memory -- far more than the Q/Q9c. I guess another issue for me is that I have a work-issued BlackBerry, and the Q/Q9c are pretty similar to it -- but the Touch is just a totally different device.

But don't get me wrong, if there were no Touch for Sprint, I would have upgraded my Q to a Q9c.

well i went the other way...i just returned my touch and got the Q9C.

My screen got messed up on the touch, and i just decided to try something new. While the touch is an excellent phone...it just needs to be developed more. all the HTC stuff works perfectly, but when it comes to all the OTHER programs it can be a pain. for instance the on screen keyboard may block the text your inputting in certain programs. but, as a phone, it works great. its plenty fast. the touch screen countrols are very accurate.

BUT....I'm loving the Q9C.

Having a real keyboard is a definate plus, and this one is VERY comfortable. The included GPS is great, and works well with Google maps. the battery life seems like it will be MUCH better than that on the touch, which was another one of my main issues I had with that phone. plus the camera on the Q has a flash! the only downside im seeing now is its harder to get to all the options to customize it...and there are fewer options.

it all depends on your choice.

So many people on here just switch their phones every 5 minutes like it's not even a thing. Seriously, just stick with the phone you've purchased, and enjoy it :-)

im at 10 minutes with the touch a new personal record!

hehe

im still looking for that 1 smartphone that does it all like i want the touch may be that im still deciding that

but i do have 2 lines for the very reason of switching phones all the time

so i can leave 1 constant, and swap out the other but even that main line got swapped mostly because my mogul crapped out and ecare offered me a touch to replace it

yeh same here i have a phone problem lol, 6700, 8830, 6800,q9c, touch all within 3.5 months or so. I jsut cant chose what i want or get bored of what i have. Nothing's really satisfied me yet Sprint has to offer PDA-wise. The Touch is the closest so far. Plus i like to keep up with technology and get the newest thing out

All of the posts above sound like they need phone addicts help...

And I do too...:scare:

I came from the Treo 755p to the touch and I am loving the touch. I can text and email but I use the standard touch keyboard...I have 2 applications on the phone and applied 2 hacks. Thats it..I use the automatic profile to silence my phone while I am at work in meetings 75% of the time. My touch have been very stable so for now it is my soul mate...

Bought the centro and sold it on ebay within hours of getting it last week.
Q9c hasnt even peaked my attention...

yeh but the phone has been out 2 weeks they havent even thought software update yet. youll prob say the same thing about teh q9c though, i had that thought already since i got it and decided to return it. Theres things it wont do outa the box it should too. let alone they didnt include any kind of memory card, no headphones, and only a bulging extended battery (only included a data cable n wall charger). So youll have to buy a new format memory card (mini sd) and headphones on top of the $450 price. Like i said nothing is perfect.

theres always downfalls of any pda device they all have their hiccups.

i couldve walked you through fixing those links really fast too they were jsut paths to the programs in the registry. Live search that was included was the older version so if u upgraded it broke the link since the path was different. very simple to understand why and easy to change, about 30 seconds. same with the homepage and the IM icon for both the cube and the start menu, i have it working like that. Total id say under 5 min of changes.

If youre not willing to play with the phone a lil and "hack" or change things you wont like any PDA offered.

yep pda phones are like cars, theres allways a few tweaks needed to make it yours, in a car you adjust the mirrors, seats, etc, with a pda you have to tweak the reg, install some apps etc

One other thing I've noticed that the Touch FAR exceeds the Q in is re-acquiring a Sprint signal after roaming. My Q would almost NEVER go back to Sprint EVDO after I came out of the DC Metro tunnel and roaming on Verizon. Touch has no problems whatsoever.

Granted, this could have been fixed in a recent Q update -- not sure.

I noticed something completely different when coming from no signal to signal. When I come out of a tunnel on MARTA here in Atlanta the Touch would take ~30 - 45 seconds to re-acquire signal. The Q9C along with the Mogul seemed to get a signal within a few seconds with the Mogul being slightly worse. As far as roaming back to Sprint, the Mogul wasn't very good at it and the Q9C seems to be good at it. The touch was decent too at this but took longer it seemed.

I got the Touch and just didn't like it. It's a sweet looking phone no doubt, and the touchscreen is great - but I found myself having to use the stylus too much; however my husband *who was still with AT&T at the time, saw me with it, stole it from me and signed up for his own Sprint Sero plan. I got the Moto Q9C and love it. The keyboard is great - GPS with google maps and windows live rocks, and I don't have to worry about a stylus!

The perfect phone, in my opinion would be Moto Q9C with a touchscreen!~

I am surprised at myself... I am actually having trouble deciding which one i want. I do like the Q9 very much. I feel that i am in more control and can do things faster or get things done, faster. I like the Touch very much, also. I think the full keyboard on the Q is what my problem is. I am going from a Mogul, which is just to big and heavy. A couple other thoughts:

-Software for WM6 professional is plentyful
-Alot more accessories available for the Q, especially OEM.
-Touch is smaller and sleeker

what to do, what to do...

i'm still considering which of these to upgrade to

i kno i'd love both because it'd b my first smartphone/ppc...but i think i need the keyboard there. My hands arent small and because of that I also like the fact that i could probably still type one-handed on a Q9c...i cant wait to play with one.
Also, i just need buttons...feels like (without shortcuts) it'd be a longer process to get to things or around menus, etc...however it can go both ways.
touchscreen makes navigation faster, and pressing a button can do the same

my main thing though is needing to pull up a keyboard. i like thinkin that its right there...and i dont need to roll my finger over to the option.

call me crazy....

I'm in the same boat with the keyboard thing.
I have a treo 700wx and am thinking about the Touch and Q9.

I have messed with both and the lack of keyboard is the killer for me on the Touch.
yet on the Q9 it doesn't have a touch screen.

I am to the point now that I think the keyboard is a much bigger issue for me.
Just don't know.

Added: I looked at the Pearl and 8830 and would prob go 8830 if it wouldn't add so much to my bill. the Pearl keyboard is about as bad as the Centro as far as I'm concerned. there's no spacing and not enough feedback.

The Touch works for different people. The Q9c is the best blend of the Blackberry 8830 World Edition and the previous Q.

Advantages of Q
Rubberized, responsive keyboard
Extended Battery

Advantages of Touch (http://www.cellfanatic.com/2007/11/19/htc-touch-review-youve-got-the-touch/)
RAM 128MB, 256MB ROM
Windows Mobile 6 Professional

Both devices have a nice sleek look and excellent design appeal. The Q9c is larger, but its a sacrifice you make for a full rubberized keyboard. Typing speeds are excellent and it feels better than typing on the Blackberry 8830.

The Touch keyboard works, there are several options (TouchPAL, PocketCM etc), but it still isn't a real keyboard. This is the deal breaker for many, but if you can make it work the Touch is a nice compact device that gives you one of the fastest Windows Mobile 6 Professional experiences to date.

I personally, couldn't handle the Touch after using it for the past month and ended up selling it. I had the iPhone and was able to handle the onscreen keyboard, but the web browsing with a shared keyboard is just an overall pain. Sorry, SPB fullscreen keyboard does not cut it on a 2.8 inch screen. If you plan on doing a lot of web browsing and data entry get the Q9c, you get the long talk time (over 7hours) and you get a sleek device.

I used the Q for 11 months which is a long time for me. In the last few months I tried a Touch and loved it at first. After a week using the Touch I returned it because I need a physical keyboard. I then tried a centro and decided to give it to my wife. Then tried my first BlackBerry (Pearl). I liked the Pearl but prefer a full qwerty keyboard and a bigger screen so I returned and bought another centro. I really like the centro because everything works good and fast out of the box. It's nice to have threaded text messaging and picture mail. I have big fingers and at first I didn't think I could use the centro because of the small/tight qwerty keyboard but really it's not bad at least not for "me". I was going to get the Q9c but after playing with it for several hours I just didn't think it was that much different then the Q and I just wanted something different.

Well after about a week. I'm pretty satisfied with the Q9c. There are things I wish I had a touch screen, but for the most part I'm really happy with it, especially the keyboard and the GPS. I spend a lot of time in the car, so it's a feature that I love.

My wife has the centro and I can't stand her keyboard plus I just don't like palm OS.

It's fast for what it does though.
My 700wx just hesitates too much and I'm not a power user.
I think the only thing I would miss about my wx for the touch screen is solitaire ;)

I exchanged my Touch for the Q9c and it was the best thing I ever did. I am a big emailer/texter and I have big hands:hee: The Touch was just too small for me, everytime I tried to hit a key on the keyboard 2 keys got pressed. I HATED IT!!!

Got the Q9c and Im happy again. I needed a regular size keyboard and now I have one.:headbang2

I agree with the above poster. I too tried the Touch and it was a good phone. BUT, if you do a lot of texting and emailing the Q9c is where it's at.
I don't have big hands either but I STILL prefer using the keyboard and the Q9c has the BEST keyboard I've encountered on a smartphone to date. It's my favorite Sprint phone yet. I will probably have it until a new revision comes out OR a better Touchscreen type phone. The Touch is a good start though, but still needs a bit more developement.

I'm with you. i'm coming from the mogul. great pda/phone. i'm just too active to keep opening and closing a keyboard everytime i get a text or email. i played with the touch but the mogul did all of what the touch does. now i have the Q9c and I'm loving it!

I have had my Q9c* for a week and, of course, have a similiar lingering thoughts of trying the Touch. I guess that's why Sprint offers a 30-day swap.

My attraction to the Touch are larger screen (right?), slick interface (but is it just a gimmick?) and smaller form.

I will say that after a week I am VERY happy with the Q9c so current thoughts are to stay with it. Why?
1) + It appears to be a very solid, quality device...both physically and with the software.
2) + GPS works great.
3) + Keyboard
4) + It is leaps and bounds better then the prior Q.
5) - Size (Although I don't find the bigger battery a distraction)

Touch
1) - If it had GPS (and not just a promise) this would be a more difficult decision.
2) + Size . I am more of a "toss it into my pocket" person than a belt holster type.
3) + Comfortable feel.
4) - Software interface...is this an advantage or just something like "Microsoft Bob" (remember that?).
5) - I swore never to go back to a stylus device again.

*coming from a previous Q and 6700 before that and a bunch of palm devices before that!

Yeah I'm also in the same boat. I just got my Mogul yesterday but the QC keeps staring at me in the store. Although Sprint is having a problem porting my number over from Helio. 2 hours last night with Sprint on the phone with no luck. Man when people say Sprint has the worst customer service they weren't lying. I guess since i have 30 days from the time my lines get activated this just gives me more time to play with the Mogul before looking into the Q9c.

Yeah im kind of debating about just sending the mogul back to sprint and going into a store and picking up the Q9c and getting a new number. Sprint said porting will take a few days and they will call me back.

You're new to the forums so I'll cut you some slack... Once you've been here for several months (for some like me it didn't take that long...) You will soon become a phone freak too. What makes us a phone freak? Well, the bastages just can't make an all in one phone that we want, so we try every single one out in hopes it fits our every need. But then again, there's also those phone freaks who just want the newest stuff (ie. me and about 95% of this forum) lol

this is all very accurate and the reality is it only becomes a stronger and stronger phone addiction. It will eventually come to a realization that there is no perfect phone, but all this will do is give you the patients to wait for the next phone release. Unfortunately you will still be buying the phone on release date haha.

battery life on the TOUCH is terible you cant go 1 day without charging it unlike the q it lasts alot longer.

q9c takes mini sd and the touch takes micro sd.

i too switched from mogul to touch now im using q9c im just waiting for touch to be updated and have gps enabled then im switching back to it. dont get me wrong but the q is a very solid device you can recieve and make calls without no problems unlike the touch it sometimes doesnt wake up when you are getting a call.

yes and you and the poster above you are missing a very key point- the q9c battery is EXTENDED and the Touch's is a regular normal. If you put a hump battery on the Touch too itd prob have just as good battery life. Trust me the slim Q9 battery last the same as the Touch's if you wan an even, real comparison

At least make it an apples to apples comparison.

I'd rather not make an apples to apples comparison.

We're comparing what you get out of the box, I would assume.

HTC/UT Starcomm devices are already bulky, ask anyone who stuck an extended battery on their 6700 how much they liked that? I firmly believe better engineering could reduce the size of the HTC/UT devices.

My 6700 now serves only as a PDA/Wireless EVDO modem, having been replaced by a Sanyo M1, and that replaced by my current Q9c.

In my opinion, you won't miss your touch screen. Except for copy/cut/paste.

The out of box battery life, yes with the "extended" battery, is amazing, even with Bluetooth on and using Data throughout the day.

GPS and a real keyboard was the deciding factor for me.

I have little faith Sprint will ever enable it on the Touch, and I use it all of the time on my Q9C. I travel a lot and just be able to find the nearest gas station, bank, etc with Live Search or Google Maps makes a huge difference.

I use Vito CopyPaste (http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/products/download.php?ID=1867&BID=24) and it takes care of this problem very well.

I missed the touchscreen (had a T650 for a year b/f I got a Q) for about 3 minutes. And for me, the Q9c's keyboard is the best out there - I just could not get used to an on screen kb. And, IMO, the actual phone radio is better on the Q series than the HTC or Palm devices.

Im with you Bubba... Q9c's keyboard friggin rocks, and believe me I have tried every PDA phone Sprint has had. I also agree with the radio. Ive even gotten reception in an elevator with my Q9c. My old Touch and my 755p would both drop the moment I stepped into the elevator.

I'm actually surprised about some of the items mentioned. For instance, those who were touch screen freaks said they missed it for only a few minutes. I hope that is the case for me. I've had the Mogul and currently using a Treo 700wx. Hated not being able to use the Mogul with one hand. I love external keyboards. I'm glad the copy and paste question was answered.
