Hi, I have a SERO plan and want to see if I can swap my 700P with someone's blackberry or Windows Mobile device (long story, but among other things my Treo just doesn't work with my email app since the firmware update).
Anyway, I'm wondering how easy it is to do this. Up until the time I joined Sprint in May, 2006, I'd been a Tmobile customer for 4 or 5 years. It was easy to just buy a new unlocked GSM phone and swap your SIM into it. I know with Sprint there would be some kind of activation required, right? Also, should doing this reset my contract? Just wondering if there are any hidden gotcha's when one wants to do this sort of thing with Sprint in general and with a SERO plan in particular...
Thanks!

to put a blackberry on your plan you need to add the blackberry data plan which, iirc, is an additional $39.99 per month, there is no way around that even with sero
a windows mobile device would require no additional service.
instead of finding an unlocked phone you need to find one with a 'clear esn' the esn is an electric serial number and it registered in sprint's system, so if the phone is reported lost or stolen or attached to an account with a balance you can not put it on your account.
once you have a phone with a clean esn, you call *2, tell them you want to do an esn swap, they will walk you through the programing instructions, and the new device will be on your account

Thanks! That's very helpful! So, the only way you can use data with a blackberry is through a blackberry plan? You can't just use your unlimited SERO data? That blows! $40 extra a month on TOP of SERO? No thanks. Guess I'll be going with Windows Mobile...

That is the price you have to pay for BlackBerry data. However, I have seen Sprint's T&C somewhere that for their BB data plan, it does include tethering (PAM in other words).
On another note, TMO offers the cheapest BB data plan for $20 a month if you have a voice plan together with BIS only. Sprint has no BIS BB plan.

You will be happy with a windows media device. I however had never used a treo, i've checked them out in the stores but I love my windows mobile device. As long as the esn on your new phone is clean then swapping it just takes a simple call to *2. You may be charged a $36 activation fee but whenever I do it I get the charge reversed. Stick with the sero and the additional BB plan is expensive, whether you can tether the phone or not you can do it with any pda phone and pdanet. Costs alot less too!
