Unless you have a PAM plan it won't work,ever.

You can't just tether it for casual usage like you could with other, older sprint phones?
edited to add: it worked great with my sanyo 5500, but I get a "username/password" error on my computer with the m1"

No it won't work with newer Sanyo phones unless you pay for a modem plan.

That explains why I can't even get it to install the driver for the phone when connected via cable, only via Redtooth.

you can get the USB drivers anywhere, but the PAM is a requirement
