I'm going to be living temporarily (for 6 months!) in a location where I will not have internet access. I did notice, however, that I get great Sprint reception on my existing phone (Samsung A640). I looked at Sprint's coverage map and noted that the area is covered by Sprint's new EVDO network (Mineola, Long Island, NY). Therefore, I'm thinking it would be nice to get broadband-like connections (I download a lot of stuff almost daily to my PDA - internet updates on drug compendiums, etc.). I know that my A640 is BT capable and exports the DUN profile. If I sign up for a data-access plan on my existing line, I can connect but at very slow rates (the A640 isn't EVDO capable). Alternatively, I can simply purchase one of their data-access PCMCIA cards and slap that into my laptop and voila - broadband access. It just seemed odd to me, however, that the price seemed to be the same regardless of whether or not I'm an existing Sprint customer since it's priced as a new line of service. So, if I am going to start a new line with the 2yr agreement and all, I was thinking why get just the data card - why not instead upgrade my phone (I'd have to pay for it, it's rather new so I don't qualify for the upgrade rebates) so that I can keep my existing line and simply add data access to it? My question, then, is:
What phone(s) can provide EVDO Rev A connections to a computer/laptop via BT/USB/etc.?
All I can find out is how the phone itself can connect, but no information on whether or not I can use it as a modem and have a second device, e.g. laptop, connect to the EVDO network.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
