Can anyone confirm this? This has me excited tonight. I moved into this non evdo area almost a year ago and have been waiting the whole time. Right now im in bed watching the three triangles appear but not solid yet. I will see in the morning!

I live in Fresno and I have been griping to Sprint about the EVDO service I pay for every month (though I actually get it free) that I can't use :td:

They always send me a generic response that says there will be a big hoopla when it is coming and we can't reveal a release date for competitiveve reasons.

Well low and behold today I woke up and my Motorola Q has the EVDO symbol. I think the phone is tripping and restart it. It still has it. I open a few webpages and they seem fast, but I'm still not convinced.

I go here: http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and do the test with a 1mb file and it shows a download speed of 488 kb/sec  :headbang2

The service has been on again off again all day, but I would say I've had it for the majority of the day (though I don't right now). I've run the speed test several times and it's been between 420-488 kb/sec.

I emailed Sprint to see if this is a testing phase or if it is release....we'll see, but I'm thinking Fresno FINALLY has it!!!

I work in Clovis, CA (Which is 4 miles from where I live in Fresno). Oh well. I guess Fresno coverage is enough for now. Cant have everything.

I called sprint tier2 support and a guy told me that im probably roaming. But off of who? We don't have alltel out here like in South Carolina. Who else has EVDO out here besides Verizon?

Confirmed. :D EVDO here on Blackstone and Nees. Speed tests are a little sluggish at times but they're probably either A) just testing or B) still fine tuning equipment. I was told by a rep at the blackstone/nees store when I bought my mogul that they would be testing in August.

I've had it all day today, even in Clovis (near Shaw and Willow)

Statikk did you get any kind of deal ont he Mogul? I have a Q and I like it, but I'd love to get the Mogul...I don't have much leverage (plan is only a year old and I got all kinds of discounts and freebies on my plan).

No unfortunately I'm on too cheap of a plan to get any kind of discounts on phones, so I've always had to buy my phones at full price. It hurt... a lot!

I don't think I can pony up $400 for that phone, that's almost as much as an iphone :icon_smil

Would you say the phone is worth the price?

My EVDO was good to go all day today, except in the court house downtown???

I suppose Sprint isn't the only carrier, but one hand sure doesn't know what the other is doing with Sprint. Here's Sprint's response to my email:

I suppose Sprint isn't the only carrier, but one hand sure doesn't know what the other is doing:

Dear *********,

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I will be happy to assist you regarding the EVDO coverage in your area.

I have checked in Fresno - CA and sorry to inform that there is no coverage of EVDO in your area as yet. However, I would like to inform you that our Technical Support Team is working for upgrade of EVDO coverage in your area.

I can not provide you with the exact date of a service launch. When we launch the EVDO service in your area, you will be notified.

I once again apologize for the inconvenience in this regard.

We value your business and always look forward to the opportunity to provide you excellent service now and in the future. Thank you and have a great day!

Question: I have had Power Vision service on my phone for some time, however there is no Power Vision coverage near me (Fresno, CA), so my Power Vision service has been useless. Today my phone showed throughout the day that I had EVDO service. I tested my download speeds and they were over 400 kb/sec (which is EVDO service).

My phone is now showing that it has regular Rx1 service (downloads about 100 kb/sec). What is going on? Is Fresno FINALLY getting EVDO? Am I FINALLY going to get what I pay for every month?

Is this a testing phase or is it released?

When all was said and done after buying the phone outright I think I ended up paying closer to $500 for it. :( Was it worth it? For me I'd have to say yes. Since I only purchase a new phone once every 4 years usually (ya it's a long time to keep a phone but paying full price sucks!) I usually like to get the best of the best.

After having the 6700 with Verizon as a business phone with the last company I worked for I was kind of hooked on the pocket pc thing. In my line of work I'm driving all over the valley just about every day and need a way to keep in touch with the office. They won't pay for phones for us so I have clients email me when they need to get ahold of me and I can usually get back to them in a timely manner then (this way I'm not giving out my personal #. Of course it's annoying when you live in a 1x mode and having your email check every 15 min drains your battery in like a short day...but I digress!

I use it to play music through the stereo in the car, and watch tv/movies off my SD card while waiting for slow computers, having lunch on the road, etc. Gaming and web browsing on it is also pretty entertaining even though the web can be frustrating on pocket browsers.

It also helps me out at work by giving me an internet connection while I'm out and about while tethered to my laptop. 1X speed isn't great, but it's still mobile and it's better than dialup. If wireless access is around and I don't have a working computer but need a file I just download it to my sd card, pop that in an adapter, and then copy it to whatever pc I need it on. The remote desktop is also extremely useful for accessing my home and office networks.

So now that I've rambled on about all this I guess the simple answer would really be yes, it's worth the $$ if you can see yourself using the majority of the features that aren't available in a cheaper phone.

By the way for those who are interested... I took a quick trip down 41 to 99 to American Ave today and I had EVDO most of the way although my signal has generally not been a strong one. There were spots where I switched into 1X. I'm not sure if the towers are switching in and out of EVDO or not. I didn't notice if I was on 1X at home this morning but tonight when I got here I was unfortunately. (Maple/Herndon area)

Hopefully we can get some clarification on what coverage will officially be like in the area and if this is "the rollout" or they're just testing. I'm also wondering if they are just going to roll out rev. A speeds right from the start or if we have to wait a few more years again. Definitely excited just to have 2 bars in EVDO mode and get to see the little icon light up for once!

I was just reading some threads a little further down the page about areas who also suddenly lit up with EVDO. I suppose it's possible that we may be recieving our EVDO due to a roaming agreement between Sprint and Altel for data service.

Considering many people are now reporting EVDO in Fresno within the last 2 days I would definitely say it's Sprint.

Maybe there's hope that Sprint will get EVDO further up the Valley.

I went to the sprint store yesterday and one of the guys there seen knowledgeable. Based on what he told me, they are currently "testing". that is why it takes so long for the reps to be notified in their system that there was a change. Sprint will be in this area tuning the network for probably the next 6 weeks. So by October sprint really will have a powerfull network in Fresno! Another side note is that the technician was wrong. There is NO! other EVDO coverage out here available for sprint. I was too smart to believe that so i temporarly downgraded to the oldest PRL just to confirm cuz I knew that if it was a native signal it would be picked up regardless of the roaming list unless it is a roaming signal. Sorry for the run on sentences but im posting from phone and wanted to get the word out.

Yeah I saw a sprint crew the side of 99 yesterday afternoon so I figured they were probably doing turn-ups on the towers. I would've loved to pull over and try to get some info from guys in the know, but I didn't want to be annoying, and there was a lot of traffic to.
