View Full Version : $40 a month for EVDO (datacard)

Ok, we all know it's $60 a month to get Sprint's EVDO service; $50 if you're on the SERO plan; however, I have heard that several people have been able to get their EVDO for only $40 a month; one guy bought two cards and had them both for a while; he called in to cancel one, since he no longer needed it...the result? Sprint cut the price to $40 a month for each card.

Have any of you had any success with this? I'm definitely interested, as my formerly stable EVDO connection is now being shared with someone else in the area. :(

I just use my BB as a modem when needed :) I got the BB plan for $30/month for unlimited use, including web, PAM and GPS. A much better deal IMO

not for me; since this is a total replacement for DSL/cable/FTTH (none of which are available in my area), I want the best speeds possible; this can only be done with EVDO Revision A; and no phone currently out has that yet (though the Mogul supports it).

My girlfriend got a family plan from Sprint, then I signed her up for the 500 SERO plan. When she called in to cancel the old (within 30-days) plan, retentions saw her SERO plan and offered to turn her old non-data, non-SERO plan into a data card plan for $40 per month. I clearly heard that and realized that's $10 cheaper than the original offering for SERO data cards. Of course we didn't need it and so we denied it.

It seems the only way to get such a deal is through retentions with a "threat" to cancel... And as bad as it may sound, it helps to be a cute-sounding girl talking to a guy in retentions.......

could this be a possible sign that Sprint will slash their EVDO card's monthly price to $40 in the near future (to coincide with the WiMAX release, possibly)?

I pay $29.99+$7 for insurance a month. I got that deal thru my bro's SWAC plan.

We have our Air Card that bills at a little less than $40.00 a month with Unlimited Data. We love it!

How'd you manage to pull that one off?

See my sig. I have my $30 SERO 500 plan and my $30 Unlimited Data Connection Card plan. Coupled with my discounts, it's a pretty sweet deal.

what, exactly, is the SWAC discount, and how does one get it?

or for employee's willing to give it out, correct? (not that I'm going to ask for one, I just wanted to confirm this).

its a true "friends and family" plan for sprint employees. Its better than SERO, but the employee is limited on how many lines he can have on his SWAC plan.

Unless you have a cousin or a best friend working for sprint, its not a plan you will be getting anytime soon!

ok, thanks; yeah, I had heard of this plan earlier, but I didn't know the name, so I was just confirming it was the same thing.

Just called in and asked how much an Air Card would cost and we were quoted a little less than $40.00.

We have been with Sprint since 1999, never had our line turned off and monthly bill has always been around $100 beofre taxes a month.

Their 40MB plan is $39.99 /month, so that's probably what they quoted you.

The SWAC connection card is in my name. I am not employed by Sprint.

lucky you; I wish I could find someone willing to give one out to me (I pay all my bills on time)...especially since someone in the area has also evidently pulling from the same tower I am....so, the service really isn't worth the $50.00 to me anymore *sigh*.

Anyway.

I'm confused.... Are you suggesting that sprint can only support one data card at full speed per tower??

Most any data connection will slow down during peak times. Its more an symptom of the internet having more traffic during the daytime in your area and less at night. DSL, cable modem..... They all get a certain amount of speed to the network switch and then after that they can slow down.

The net is like the freeway system in california...... fast at night with few people using it, slow as hell at rush hour! The more people that want off at one exit, the slower that area will be.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm suggesting. You see, I live "out in the boonies". DSL isn't available (won't be until 2008 at the least..2009-2010 at the latest). Cable will never deploy (they went through with a petition twice years ago before broadband even existed and both times, it failed....now everyone in my area has satellite, so trust me, they wont' deploy). Thus, you have 2 options: satellite (ICK!) or dial-up.....or, if you pay close attention or you heard something; EVDO.

So, basically, I got EVDO and was getting consistent speeds of 1270-1280k down and 400-500k up (except for the occasional slow-down in the evening/at peak times).

however, 2 weeks ago, my speeds were very unstable from around 12PM to 1AM. (after 1AM, it was extremely stable). My speeds went from a consistent 1270-1280k to 400k, 500k, 600k, 700k, or 1000k (it varies so much, it's not funny). I ran a number of tests; definitely not my router, card, or computer....then I did a test on my Mogul (normally around 1000k)...same results; unstable, inconsistent speeds.

I called up Sprint; nope, no tower problems.

thus, I'm 95% sure someone else in the area heard of EVDO and is using it heavily.

Since the towers in non-dense areas only have one data-only T1 line and Sprint keeps about 256k for themselves (I'm not just going by my results here; many have also noticed this), 1288k is the max you can get, down...(in the city, it's not much better; they have two data-only T1 lines, and they keep 256k from each...thus making the max speed 2576k down).

So, basically, you split that 1270-1280k between two people who are surfing/YouTubing/campaigning/e-mailing/gaming/FTPing/BitTorrenting/what-have-you, it becomes very unstable.

I might also add it totally wrecks my latency in online games...normally I'd get around 150ms in this one server I like....when the other person is on, it rockets to 170-200ms+.

If the guy wasn't around, I'd be happy with the service, as it was a true blessing compared to dial-up....but now? Heh...definitely not worth the $50.90 a month I pay for the service.

I got Sero plan with Mogul. It is great. I can use the unlimited data plan that comes with the sero and use my laptop to surf the web. I canceled my Comcast high speed Internet. It was $39, It covers my cell phone bill now. I’m not certain if I’m getting charged for the data? It is my first month. I guss i will find out soon.

you're using your Mogul as a PAM (Phone as a Modem), which you're not really supposed to do without a PAM plan (normally $39.99 IIRC).

still, you can only get around 1000k down and 128k up with the Mogul; it's still only EVDO Revision 0; data cards are nearly all EVDO Revision A now.

As long as I don’t get in to a trouble with Sprint. Checking email and surfing web if pretty ok with 700 down and 120 up. Thanx

It seem like you didn't know the old SERO, it around a year ago the regular data plan was 70/months but SERO only 30/months as promoted 65% off. Even I did not need but I still wanted it, I know it will be raise some how and I do have laptop to put that card in. But my account limited I couldn't open any more line. Now its 50/months and regular is 60/months. I wish I could open back then.
