Hello, I got a Samsung m610 a while back, I have spent a considerable amount of time looking at how to do various things such as custom ringtones, getting youtube videos to play on it, transferring pictures from an old memory card to a new one, and other things. While researching how to do these things I did not find a place that had all of this information in one spot. I am making this guide so that people do not have to spend so much time to complete these seemingly simple tasks. One more thing: I do not have a data plan, so I wanted to do all this without using PCS Vision, all of the tutorials below use just the memory card to transfer data and do not use PCS Vision. Lets get started...

Before I start with the guide I'm going to tell you the things that I used to make this all work. I just used the free trial of Allok Video 3GP converter available from www.download.com (search for "Allok 3gp" and it will be near the top of the list). I don't know if the trial expires, but I do know that it will only convert the first 5 minutes, which works just fine unless you plan to have anything longer. You must also have a microSD card and a memory card reader so you can transfer data from the microSD card to your computer.

Also something you need to do is configure your m610 to save all pictures/videos to the memory card, and not the phone itself. Camera button>Settings and Info>Auto Save to>Memory Card. Also you will need the phone to create a Media folder for you. Menu>Memory Card if you do not already have a Media folder it will ask if you want to make one now, hit yes.

Another thing to note is that I got the software update for my m610 before I started any of this, so I do not know if these steps will work on the previous version. Settings>Others>Update Phone Software. I have read that some people cannot get this update, I do not know why, it worked fine for me.

Custom Ringtones:
This seems to be one that many people are interested in. I found a way to use any music you already have and to get it on the phone without having to use internet on the phone. So in other words I found a way to get these without incurring any data charges. The steps below might look long and tedious, but once you know how it goes it shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to complete them all.

Step 1:
On your m610 go to the camcorder and take video (I would imagine that both the long video option and the video mail option would work, but I chose the long video option). Take a video and make it less than 30 seconds. Now take a picture, I know that seems pointless, but you need to. The picture and video will be erased later, so don't worry about having a random picture/video stuck on your phone. Turn off your m610 and remove the battery cover, remove the battery, and take out the microSD memory card.

Step 2:
Plug the microSD card into your memory card reader (I don't know if other memory card readers have an actual microSD slot, but mine didn't so I used the adapter that came with my memory card. The microSD card slides into the back of the adapter, essentially turning it into a regular SD memory card, then I plugged that into my memory card reader). Bring up the contents of the memory card on your computer. There should be a folder called DCIM, if there is not, than you did not configure your m610 to save pictures/videos to your memory card, do that and then start over on these steps.
Open the DCIM folder and there should be another folder called 100SSMED, open it.
Scroll down to the very bottom and you should see that second to last is the video you just took. If the very bottom file is not created by the phone (aka it's the ringtone you're going to make) than the phone will get confused and will not see anything that is on the memory card. It will have a file extension of .3g2. You will probably notice that the all the pictures/videos seem to use the same method of naming, it is this: SSPX than the number of the picture or video. For example SSPX0251 would be the 251 picture/video that you have taken with your phone. This is important, you need to know what the video you just took is called. Minimize the folder, it is time to convert the music that you want to use as your ringtone.

Step 3:
I used Adobe Audition for this because I just really like the software, but any audio editing program that allows you to edit the start/end times of your song should work fine. Something else that I like to do is make the song snippet fade out at the end, it is not required to make this work, I just think it sounds better. If you found a free audio editing program that does these things please post its name and where to get it in the comments for others to see. Use your audio editing program and choose a section of a song that you want to use as your ringtone, make 100% sure that it is under 30 seconds (29 seconds works just fine). Save this section of the song as a new file, preferably in mp3 format (I don't know for sure what other formats that the Allok converter can convert, but mp3 files work fine).

Step 4:
Open the Allok Video to 3gp converter. In the upper left hand corner click the Add button, navigate to your shortened mp3 file, and click Open. Back on the main screen where it says profile choose the 3G2 profile from the drop down list. For resolution choose 320x240 VGA, for audio quality choose 128 kbps, for channels you can choose either stereo or mono (the m610 only does not have stereo speakers, but in my opinion stereo sounds better), set the frame rate to 14.985, and finally set the sample rate at 32000 Hz. Note where you put the output folder and then click convert. It should not take very long. Find that file and make sure that is is less than 512 KB, if it is more it will not work. If it is more you need to either lessen the audio quality or select mono instead of stereo and convert the file again.

Step 5:
Remember back when I said you need to know the name of the video you took? This is where that comes into play, so if you forgot it, check it again. OK, you memorized the name of that video, go to the ringtone-to-be and rename it to the exact same name as the video (Make sure the letters are capitalized and you leave the .3g2 file extension when you rename it). Go to the 100SSMED folder and delete that video. Then copy the properly renamed ringtone-to-be into the 100SSMED folder. Now in that folder you should have the picture you took at the very bottom of the list (when you paste the ringtone into the folder it will place it at the bottom, just hit the back button and open the folder again and it will be placed according to how you named it) second to last should be the ringtone you just made. If that is not true than you probably named the ringtone wrong, go back and make sure you named the ringtone correctly.

Step 6:
Remove the microSD card from your computer, plug it back into the m610, put the battery and battery cover back in and turn on your phone. Camera Button>My Albums>Memory Card. There should be the picture you took and the ringtone you made. The ringtone will look like a little white box with a gray X in the middle of it. At this time you may now delete the picture you took. Exit My Albums. Settings>Sounds>Ringer Type. You can choose how you want to use your ringtone. Lets say you want it to be Voice calls with Caller ID. Voice Calls>With Caller ID>My Videos>In Memory card> Choose the video in the upper left hand corner with the white box with an X in it and click Assign.

Congratulations!!! You now have a custom ringtone and it didn't cost you for any data usage. To test it you can call your m610 with another phone, or you can go to the contacts menu, choose any contact and hit OK, go down to Default Ringer and hit play. The ringtone you made will now play and repeat.

This is the end of Part 1. There is a character limit of 10,000 characters. This guide is 14,238 characters.

Getting YouTube videos onto your phone.
Step 1:
Find a video on YouTube that you want. If you are just using the trial version of the Allok Video to 3GP converter than the video you want to use should be under 5 minutes or else it will get cut off at 5 minutes.

Step 2:
Copy the URL of the video you wish to use. Goto www.youtubex.com (http://www.youtubex.com). In the Download text box paste the URL to your chosen video and click the Download Video button. It will bring you to a new page where you will notice a box that says the name of the video you want to download, a screenshot of the video, and some other stuff. To the right of the screenshot it says "Download" in small blue letters. Click that, and choose save to disk for Firefox, (if you're using Internet Explorer save it to the desktop). Wait for the download to finish.

Step 3:
You don't need youtubex anymore, you can exit it, or do whatever you want with it. Goto your desktop and find the file that you just downloaded. It will have an odd name with lots of random letters. Click on it once so you can see the file extension. Sometimes the videos downloaded from youtubex will have a .flv file extension, and sometimes they wont. If it doesn't have the .flv file extension rename it and add the .flv extension.

Step 4:
Open the Allok Video to 3GP converter. In the upper left hand corner click the add button, navigate to your saved YouTube file, and click open. It is my opinion that the Good setting under Video Quality is the best because when viewed full screen higher qualities will bring down the frame rate too much, and lower qualities will just look ugly. You may choose whichever quality that best fits your needs. Where it says profile choose the 3G2 profile from the drop down list. For resolution choose 320x240 VGA, for audio quality choose 128 kbps (or lower to save space, you probably won't notice the difference between 128 and 160 kbps on the m610), for channels you can choose either stereo or mono (the m610 does not have stereo speakers, but in my opinion stereo sounds better, and if you plan to use headphones you will probably want stereo), set the frame rate to 14.985 (for some reason it just seems to run smoother than 15), and finally set the sample rate at 32000 Hz (Honestly, I don't know what this setting does, but I have always set it to 32000 and have enjoyed the results). Note where you put the output folder and then click convert.

Step 5:
Find the converted YouTube video, right-click it, and select copy. Take the microSD card out of your m610, connect it to your computer, and find the Media folder. If you have put songs on your m610 before (from your computer, not the sprint music store) you have already been here. Paste the video into the folder. Do not make a sub folder of the Media folder and place it in that, you must put the video file directly in the Media folder. I don't know why, but if you have, say a folder called YouTube, in the Media folder and put a video in it the m610 will not be able to see anything on the memory card. You may place a song in a folder that is in the Media folder, but it cannot be more than 1 folder deep. In other words you can put music on like this: Media>[Folder] and you place the songs you want in [Folder]. you cannot put on music like this: Media>[Folder]>[Folder2]. There is only one way to put on video that has worked for me and that is this: Media> and you place all of your videos there. Whew, I hope that made sense.

Step 6:
Remove the microSD card from your computer and put it with the battery/battery cover back into your m610.

Congratulations!!! You now have a YouTube video on your m610!

Transfer pictures from an old microSD card to a new one.
My m610 came with a 64mb micoSD card, that was much to small. I knew that the m610 was supposed to only support up to 1GB cards. I wanted more than that, so I looked on the web and found that sometimes a 2GB card will work and sometimes it wont. This guy in a forum somewhere had I think 5 Kingston 2GB microSD cards and 3 of them worked in the m610, while the m610 did not even see the other 2 when they were put in. I decided to take the risk and I bought a 2GB Kingston microSD card. I am happy to say that it worked, but there is no guarantee that all Kingston 2GB microSD cards will work in an m610. I had taken lots of pictures and they were saved to the 64mb card. I wanted them on my new 2GB card. When you first place a new memory card into the m610 you must goto Tools>Mass Storage>Format Memory Card there you must enter your lock (I think by default it is the last 4 digits of whoever ordered the phone's social security number).

Step 1:
If you haven't already formatted your new memory card you need to read what is directly above this step. Make sure that the phone is set to save pictures/videos to the memory card. To do that goto Camera Button>Settings and Info>Auto Save to> Memory Card. Now go to the camera and take a picture. Turn off your m610 and remove the microSD card.

Step 2:
Connect your old micoSD card that has the pictures on it to your computer. Copy the DCIM folder to your desktop.

Step 3:
Connect your new microSD card that you want to pictures to be transfered onto to your computer. There should be a DCIM folder, if there is not than you probably did not configure your m610 to save pictures/videos to your memory card. Instructions on how to do that are in Step 1. Goto the DCIM folder on your desktop that has the pictures and open it. Select ALL of the pictures (Edit>Select All), right-click them and choose copy. Go back to the DCIM folder of the new memory card and open it. Paste all of your pictures into it. If you did not take a picture with the m610 on the new memory card before you pasted your old pictures onto it your m610 will not be able to see anything on your memory card.

Congratulations!!! You have now transfered your pictures from your old microSD card to your new one!

I think that this will be all for today. I am getting tired of typing and I have a cold so I don't feel good. If you have any questions on how to do things on your m610 please feel free to post them and I will do the best I can (just search the forums first to make sure somebody else hasn't already answered them).

In Part 1 where it says "Also you will need the phone to create a Media folder for you. Menu>Memory Card..." it was supposed to say "Media>Memory Card" instead of "Menu>Memory Card.

Very nice. Thanks a bunch.

Now if some knowledgeable soul could write up tips on how to edit an mp3 clip into a ringtone that is loud enough to actually hear over the day to day noise. Just amplifying it with Audacity doesn't always do it. The Audacity wiki has an article about it here (http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Making_Ringtones), but it starts to go overboard on the technical aspects.

I tried mp3Gain which according to it's description will boost the volume of an mp3 file without loosing quality, but really it doesn't work at all. It sounds crappy with not much boosting at all. I'm not sure how to do it. It seems like such a simple problem, you'd think it would be easy.

dude, you rock, those ringtone directions are awesome. now the only question i have for anyone is if i can get pics from my pc onto my SD card for the phone. that would be awesome. and just to let you know, i have followed all these steps for my m620, not m610, the m620 is the upstage, but all your instructions worked, so they must run the same software. thanx again.

I tried your guide to getting the custom ringtone and it first said unsupported resolution then turned to video ringer failed to be set.

I cut the song clip ok and converted it on Allok fine (I made all the specific adjustments you included and the file size was 5.18 MB)

Here are the differences that could be the problem, please let me know what I'm doing wrong or if it can even be done on my phone.

1. I do not have the m610 i have an LG Fusic!!!!!! (This may be the big problem but shouldn't it work for this phone too?)
2. The name of the video file was not the S... it was V_00002.3g2 and the picture name was P something.
3. You said that when you paste the new ringer in the folder that it should be the second to last--before the picture...but this was not the case for mine.

PLEASE HELP!!!

thanks.

I found that this method works to get a ringtone to my m610 (as opposed to paying for a download).

But how can we get a text description of the sound to display and/or an image so that one can pick and choose between multiple sounds created this way?

Would it not be nice to just select a sound by it's descriptive name?

Any tips/tricks/pointers would be appreciated....

Hello experts,

Is there a way so sync my phonebook, downloaded ringtones and screen savers on my new Samsung SPH-m610 and my PC?

I want to be certain that if my phone is lost, stolen or broken I won't lose my phonebook or the ringtones & other downloads I paid for and that I can put these back on a replacement phone.

Thanks in advance...

I was thinking about that and the m610 shows the first frame of the video when you are just browsing "My Albums" right? So if you had some video editing software (like Microsoft's free Movie Maker 2) you could on the first frame of the video put a picture that you made with Gimp (also free) or even Paint that was just like a black background with some text that had the name of the song you used. I'm making a guide now and will post it here (It will probably be a new thread) and I'll post the link when it's done.

Alright, I've spent quite a while working on this, and getting the song name to appear kinda works. When you're browsing your pictures on your phone there is still the white screen with the black X on the ringtone, BUT when you play it I've gotten a picture to appear with the song name. Seeing as how that's not very useful (if you play it you're going to know what the song is anyways) I don't think i'm going to make a guide for doing it. It really doesn't take very long. The basic idea is you create an image with the song name on it, open up Movie Maker, import your song and image, save the video, then convert it with Allok (using 176 x 144 resolution). Then you save it to your phone just like my guide says at the beginning of this thread.

if anyone has gotten something like this to work then it would be really cool if you could post how you're doing it.

Also, if what I've gotten to work actually seems useful to anyone I'll make a more detailed guide (I just don't wanna make it if no one is going to use it).

Thanks for the how-to on the ringtone. Works great. I was wondering how I can customize my message alerts. There isn't an option for video ringers. Is this possible the same way as customizing ringtones?

I tried to figure something out that would work like that, but I never made any progress. I would assume that if you had a way to hook the phone up to a computer via a usb cable or something and you were able to view all of the phone's files and folders than you might be able to figure something out, but It would probably be more work that it was worth.

If you want to get pictures from your PC to your m610 just put the micro sd card into the computer and drag any picture you want (jpg or even png) into the Bluetooth folder. Then turn on your phone and go to Menu>Tools>Mass Storage> File Manager>Memory Card> then go to the Bluetooth folder. That will launch the piscel file viewer, which you can google for more info. You can also use the file manager and go into the DCIM folder to look at your pictures, I like the piscel file viewer about 100 time more than the one you get when you go to My Albums or something.

My wife has the LG Muziq which is probably close to the Fusic if not the same for software and we could not get ringtones on her phone. I found a way to do it through Bitpim. I put all kinds of rintones and pics on her phone and she loves it. You have to download Bitpim 1.0.2 or whatever the newest version is from www.bitpim.com. On your phone you will have to use music composer to make music and it will be saved. you will have to do this for each ringtone you want on your computer. Once made you can edit it to what you want on your phone. You have to have the driver of your phone installed on your computer and plug the cable into your phone and computer. Open bitpim and have bitpim auto detect the phone. It should come up as com5 or com7 and then click on view and select View Filesystem. On the left side in the window click on Filesystem the click on the folder that is blue in the top of the middle screen and it should open the file system. then click on melody composer and look at all your files that are in there. Right click on the *.Mid file (whatever it is named) and then click overwrite. It will bring up another dialogue box and search for your MP3 ringtone you want to put on your phone. It will overwrite it and then you can set that ringtone to whichever caller you want to have it as. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Use this site to upload mp3's as ringtones to your phone.

http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/

Im not going to explain how to cut the mp3 because its not rocket science and was explained already, but you can use this site to upload the mp3 to your phone and the mp3 will be placed in your ringtones folder.

Now I have a question of my own, I am using a samsung sph-m610 and im trying to access the file system, I have found bitpm and QPST do not work with this phone, can anyone help me?

To clear up some confusion as there are other 610 phones out there that people report to have working with QPST the phone i am using is listed below.
