This was on our server today, I didn't see it mentioned so here it is. If it's a duplicate, I'm sorry.
On March 30th, EVDO PRLs 20227 & 60608 will be available via over the air (OTA) servers and direct push tool. These PRLs will allow Sprint customers (with wireless data roaming capable EVDO handsets) access to Mobile Broadband roaming services in the Davenport, IA market. This Mobile Broadband roaming coverage is expected to launch in early 2Q07.

Well giggity giggity goo... I've called support every month badgering that I have to pay $25/mo for Power Vision service that I can't even use. I figured it couldn't be too much longer, they've built like four new Sprint stores in the area in the last year...

This has been going on a while. In many markets Alltel has turned on EVDO and many sprint customers think sprint turned on EVDO. There is no real way to tell what network you are on. In Columbia, SC and Florence, SC we have EVDO thanks to Alltel. The only way I found out was a very smart district manager with Sprint.
Alltel also turned on EVDO in some mid sized markets in Louisiana. Great news since Sprint delayed their EVDO rollout til 08 with Rev A.

I assumed it was part of the Alltel contract, but I think Alltel only has two towers in the Quad City (Davenport) area.. EVDO may be available in the area, but I'm willing to bet my signal won't be any better at home :^(
Sprint's been trying to push US Cellular out of this market for awhile, hence all the new stores. The only thing I miss about US Cell is that you get coverage damn near everywhere. Sprint needs to make some improvements to their network in the area if they're going to have a prayer. US Cell has about 8 towers compared to Sprint's two (which are on the far north and far south sides of town) Roaming EVDO is a step in the right direction.

You would not believe the fight USCC puts up against other carriers coming into areas they serve and tower request. The spend a lot of money on trying to keep others out. I remember alamosa had a lot of problems getting the St. Joseph, MO market due to them.

I'm still waiting for EVDO from our Alltel towers here in the middle of Kansas. I thought they'd be in effect when the roaming contract came into effect, but I guess not.
Is there anyone I can call about this, or do I just have to wait?

Update your PRL. If Alltel EVDO is up and running in your area your phone should pick it up if you have the latest PRL.

I can't EV-DO roam in an Alltel area anymore, whereas I used to be able to. If I force roaming, the PV arrows show until I try to use a data connection, then they become the 1x arrows and I only get 1x speeds.
I used to be able to force EVDO in my ##DATA menu and would get EV-DO anyway, but even that doesn't work now.

To be honest, I don't know, I'm in Oregon. I was just passing that information along. All we have in Oregon is 1x roaming, however we don't have Alltel too. Hold out hope, it may come on when you don't expect it, or it may not go into effect until later on in April. It said early in the 2nd quarter.

I see there are a few fellow Quad City users. I was told 2 years ago we would have EVDO within 6 months and still nothing. After talking wtih a representative from IPCS, they told me by the end of Q1 of 2007 they would roll out EVDO REV A and now a store tells me in a month but I would not hold my breath. My A900 phone has the 20227 PRL but this phone does not support data roaming so I can not test it. I used to have access to a few data cards but I don't anymore. Once or if we do get EVDO then I will get the card for myself and I won't go with Verizon because of their TOS and limits. It would be nice if we could EVDO data roam on Verizon's network here but I don't think we can.

04-13-2007, 12:23 PM
What is a PRL?
Short answer: It stands for "Preferred Roaming List", and it is used by the phone to locate different cell systems.
Long answer: The PRL is a list of bands and channels in order of preference which the phone uses when it attempts to locate and connect to a cell system, such as when you first turn the phone on.
Among other things, when your cell provider makes a deal with some other cellular provider to give you a roaming discount, the PRL will be updated to include that second provider's systems. Your phone can find a system which is not on the PRL, but it will try to find a system on the PRL before it uses one which isn't on it.
But the PRL is more than that. It's also used to find your own provider's systems. That's because your provider may not be using the same band in every market.
In 800 MHz cellular, each market has two bands called A and B. When the 1900 MHz PCS bands were opened, there were six named A, B, C, D, E and F. These have been auctioned off in groups by the FCC, and even providers trying to build nationwide systems have ended up with different bands in different areas. When you travel from one city covered by your provider to a different one, the PRL tells your phone how to locate your provider there.
If you have an 800 MHz dual-mode phone or a 1900 MHz dual-band phone, or a tri-mode phone, then you have the ability to use AMPS if your phone can't find CDMA coverage. The PRL tells your phone how to locate AMPS coverage.
And even when you stay at home, the PRL helps. CDMA uses two spread-spectrum carriers which utilize 1.25 MHz each, but each of the licensed bands is actually much larger than that. Initially, most CDMA providers have deployed to use a single carrier system-wide in any given coverage area. But as traffic levels rise, they can and do deploy a second or third carrier frequency within the band, in order to increase capacity. The PRL helps your phone to find these.
The PRL is stored in your phone, but it can be updated. This can be done at a phone store with proper equipment, but increasingly it is becoming more common to do it over the air. To make that happen, you would dial a certain phone number. The process takes a couple of minutes. Not all providers support this capability. For more information about this, consult your provider.
Typically, if you are not having trouble with coverage, you don't need to concern yourself with PRL updates. But it doesn't hurt anything to ask about it every six months or so.
Ah nice I see. I just called up Sprint and dialed *2 and was told my phone needed and update and it was automated.
Thank you.
Penny

PRL updates are only done OTA on sprint service, or at a sprint store (if you want to wait, and likely you need TEP)
Sprint has EVDO roaming with alltel, and now 1xRTT with verizon, so data is available just about anywhere you have a digital signal and the right device.

I've had EVDO roaming on Alltel on my treo700p for about 2 months now... Unsure what PRL version I had... But I recently got a brand new 700p (dropped the old one a few too many times), updated to 20227, and now my data roaming is no longer working... (It didn't work before the PRL update either).. I get "Sign in failed"... At my house, there's little/no Sprint service, so I have to use roaming exclusively. I called sprint and they said they're going to have a tech check the towers around here and call me back... which is retarded since it's clearly my phone, not the network.. and it's roaming so it would be Alltel if it was a network issue. Since I have the latest PRL, there's not much they trouble shoot on my phone I guess..
With my old phone, I'd get solid full bars on roaming and semi-fast evdo at my house.. Now I get about half bars and no data roaming at all...
Any ideas? Thanks guys.

I am getting a full EVDO signal now but if your on a connection card you will need PRL 60608 and you will have to manually update the card. If you have an EVDO phone you will need 20227 to get EVDO. This started about 2 weeks ago and at first I didn't get a huge signal but from what I've heard is that they are testing it and it should be official soon. I see a REV A on my S720 card but I do not get REV A upload speeds but then again they are just testing.
