View Full Version : Help me understand: mono vs stereo bluetooth HS?

Am I understanding this correctly?

* For phone calls, the M1 (and all BT phones?) uses one BT profile, HSP (HeadSet Profile), which is mono.

* For music/video play, the M1 uses a different BT profile, i.e. A2DP, which is stereo.

* There's no crossover between the two profiles.

* Thus, it is impossible to use a normal (mono) headset to listen to music files.

* The only solution is to find a new A2DP headset, and use it in "one ear" mode for phone calling and/or one-ear situations such as a car or office environment. Right now, only the Jabra BT8010 fits that requirement.

I truly wish someone could show me where I'm wrong. It seems incredibly silly that I cannot find a way to simply use my normal BT headset to listen to music.

(PS: I have heard you can plug a BT adapter into the stereo wired-headset jack, and from there use your normal BT headset. What a waste, particularly since the phone then doesn't fit in any normal case :()

Please.... somebody explain that I'm wrong!

Otherwise... I hope the above will help others.

Have you tried changing the settings: Settings/Others/Headset Mode to stereo? I am not familiar with your headset but I get sound out of both my ear pieces while on calls and listening to music.

Well, that was an interesting idea; I didn't know about Settings/Others/Headset mode.

It came set by default to stereo. I own a mono headset. So I tried setting to mono. No change.

In detail, here's what happens for me. Sadly, I think all of the following gobbledygook adds up to the simple idea that mono headsets can't be used to play music on stereo (M1, etc) players. Silly, but there it is.

Gruesome Details...

Starting point: BT enabled, (Plantronics 340) headset is properly paired. BT indicator is green.

* I start Media Player, and choose a song to play
* Music playing through the built-in speakers
* Right-click Options->Use Bluetooth
* My headset shows up, pre-selected. Buttons are "Stop" or "Info"
* (Info shows available services on my headset are HFP and HSP; no A2DP since it is mono)
* I then click on my headset in the list...
* A message shows up: "WARNING: Some profiles cannot be connected at same time"
* After a couple of seconds, it then asks, "Disconnect from <my headset name>"? Yes/no.
* If I say "no" I'm just back to playing on the speakers
* If I say "yes", then I get a series of messages:
"<my headset name> disconnected"
"connecting..."
"Connection failed. Device not available"
* Then it waits for me to click "Done"... and I'm back to regular speaker playing.

So, it seems I'm stuck. That's why I posted this thread.

My guess is that it is trying to switch bluetooth profiles from HSP to A2DP to send music to my headset... and A2DP won't work with mono headsets.

I hope I'm wrong!

Oh I misunderstood you. Yeah then you need a stereo headset . Ive only used the Spider headset which I bought at Radio Shack for a $100. Its awesome for listening to music.

I need a one-ear headset with microphone, for the (majority) times when I'm working or driving and need to be listening from my other ear ;)

Hmmm.... may end up with one of those BT adapters after all.

I used a scala and jabra adapter before i got my bt phone. the jabra comes with a belt clip so you can use a case with your phone. bt adapters are good in the fact you can hear your custom ringers when you get calls in stead of the beeps and of course it gives you single ear music. i recommend the jabra, after testing 8 headsets with both adapters, the scala really only works best with scala headsets.

hope this helps.

in order for bluetooth devices to work together they must support the same profiles
(if both devices support hsp(hands free) then hsp will work)

i have yet to see a mono headset support a2dp(Advanced Audio Distribution Profile)
since the headset doesn't support a2dp it will not work

motorola has a stereo headset "ht820" that supports the a2dp profile and should work

whats really cool is that my car stereo supports the a2dp and the avrcp profile (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile)
so i can listen to the songs on my phone thru my car stereo

omg. I bought choose this phone thinking i can playback mp3s over a regular mono headset. It's so much more discrete than wearing those big wrap around headsets. but it looks like I wasted $150.....

so is there any work around??? please.......

I am also upset by all of this. :irked:

I am using a mono bluetooth neckloop designed for people with hearing aids and cochlear implants and the neckloop works with the phone but not with the media player. What I can not uderstand is that I can use my computer and my laptop stereo bluetooth to send audio to my mono bluetooth neckloop without any problems but not with the M1 media player. So much for accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing people.
