they're being discontinued pretty soon.

talk about a short run.

and what was sprint thinking making the phone more expensive when they took away the extra mail in rebate?

For the phone being discontinued its not surprising at all. the sanyo 9000, samsung a940, were discontinued relatively quickly as well.

If this is indeed true I am not terribly surprised. The MM8300 was discontinued pretty quickly as well compared to most other mainstream Sanyo models that stick around for 9-12 months. The PM8200 itself seemed to stick around forever!

Given that currently the M1 is only $70 more then the 8400 perhaps there will be a price drop on the M1 to somewhere around $150 to sorta bridge the gap between the two phones. Then come June there should be the Katana II to act as a thinner, updated version of the 8400 (much like the original Katana being a thin MM8300 with bluetooth and some other improvements).

All of this is just speculation but based on history it wouldn't surprise me to see the 8400 go EOL sometime in March which is a shame because it really is one of Sprints better phones in regards to overall function.

they were discontinued becuase they were never meant to be mainstream phones, more like the "flagship" of sprint's release of EVDO handsets

Subjective I know, but this is the best phone Sanyo has ever put out IMO. I might buy an extra before it goes out of production just to have it. I can't really find much not to like about it. Right now I think it's Sprint's best offering (excluding Smartphone devices.)

There were nay-sayers when news dropped that the 9000 would be discontinued as well. Regardless of any proof it seems likely that this news is true.

Just curious, why does it seem likely? You mean because Sprint lowered the price $30 or because the OP said so? Was there another indication this phone was being discontinued? The 3100 has been out for over a year hasn't it? As someone else already mentioned the 8200 lasted > a year as well. Why do we think the 8400 is a goner after only three months?

Geez. I just bought one of these Friday night.

I was about to buy the extended battery and special case backing for it. If it is discontinued in the next couple months, will the extended battery go down in price? I haven't been able to find the extended battery anywhere other than Sanyo and Sprint - both selling it at MSRP ($59.99.)

Historically, how long has it taken Sanyo to get out the successor model after it discontinues the predecessor? Since I just changed plans this weekend to a family plan and have the $150 rebate on my original phone, I was going to buy a second 8400 to replace my RL-4920, but maybe I should wait for the new model.

The 8400 has been out for almost 5 months actually so if it went EOL in March that would be a 6 month run. The reason I say its not out of the question is that the 8300 had a pretty short run itself (it was discontinued after about 6 months but there was so much extra inventory that some stores still had it in stock for another 2 months). Also with the potential June launch of the similar spec'd Katana II and the existence of the heavily talked about M1, it wouldn't seem out of the question that Sprint would want to start clearing inventory for larger pushes behind these two more buzz worthy phones.

The M1 is a direct competitor to the 8400 as far as features are concerned. Sprint doesn't need two phones from the same company competing for the same market. The 3100 nor the 8200 were ever in the same situation.

i think that the 8400 is the best phone for the $ ever made to date. the M1 doesn't have expandable memory which is a downfall to me. My 8400 broke (it was my fault not the phone's) and now i am getting a replacement in the mail. the cool thing about it is that i still have my memory card which i saved my contacts too. i can now upload my contacts to my new 8400 when it gets here. i just like the 8400 better than the m1 except the camera (which i personally dont use much anyway). its just the best for the buck if u ask me. sad more people dont have one.

Wow...maybe I should buy another one instead of waiting on the Katana II (especially considering there's no guarantee the K2 will fix the K1's issues!)

Loveshinesthru - nice name. Reminds me of the Michelle Tumes song. Great tune.

Group:

I'm surprised that neither the 8400 nor the M1 have more than 500 entry address book and the 8400 I'm using right now can't even hold 500.

I guess it comes down to how many average phone numbers you have per contact. My Nokia 6165i held all I had. The 8400 fell short.

I would consider a Katana II if the addressbook was bigger.

The voice recognition accuracy on 8400 degrades quite a bit when speaking the voice clip over Bluetooth. My other BT phones from Sprint (and my carkit) have not had this problem.

On the other hand, battery life is pretty darn good on 8400. I think it's the best of the EvDO phones.

And the Bluetooth connectivity features are as good or better than any Sprint phone right now.

I saw some new sprint adds last night on tv using the 610 and the 8400. I have a hard time believing this would be discontinued at this time.

Actually the 8400 will actually stick around a lot longer than the M1. The M1 is scheduled to be discontinued in April. If memory serves me right the MM8300 was in the lineup for a year so I think the 8400 will be with us probably up until sep 07. The M1 unfortunately will be replaced by the Samsung M620 the "Flipper". I still don't understand why Sprint replaces a model from one brand with another brand's high end model.

I don't see a reason to discontinue it unless there's another one on the horizon to replace it. As of yet we haven't heard of anything. If there was another Sanyo handset announced with BT, removable media, evdo, etc, I'd be more concerned. M1 doesn't compare in my opinion. Form factor among other things are completely different.

I don't see why this is inconcievable because after the 5600 only a few of the phones since have lasted longer than 6 months and the high ends have an even shorter shelf life
