ok - on my computer now... So what I am asking is if there are any meebo type things that would work on my cell browser/ opera mini...? I would not mind it on the web or a app. I don't wanna buy the aim, yhoo, and msn if I can just get one combined for free!

not sure but i got my msn and yahoo for free from laursifers site, you do have to pay for it, but you can download a lot of apps and games that are on the sprint website and you can just buy one months access.

I would try www.eqo.com
I got it to work on my Treo but not on my RAZR V3M.

It allows you to IM via an App with all of the major IM networks and if you use AIM you can SMS to people's phone (if they set them up on AIM).

Let me know if it works for you!

Sorry it didn't work for you.

Note however that it does NOT use SMS or text to communicate. EQO uses only data or Vision/PowerVision. It could be used to send SMS to phones by only using DATA by leveraging it's integration with AIM (and AIM's sending free SMSs to people who are not online).

something like this except for yahoo, msn, and aim all at once. and preferrably one that is in real-time - not where i have to keep reloading... (is it possible?)

There is no such program. You would have to get the AIM app, MSN app and Y!IM app and run all of them at once.

There is no such program. You would have to get the AIM app, MSN app and Y!IM app and run all of them at once.Actually there are multiple options. I think that many phones are not multi-threaded so you can't run more than one app at once and even if you could it is really tedious to keep switching back and forth.

I did quite a bit of research on this when we got a new J2ME phone (RAZR V3m). With Sprint charging for every feature (unlike before when SMS & PictureMail were bundled with Vision), I wanted to try to eliminate SMS and do everything over Vision (Power or otherwise). Knowing that AIM has the ability to SMS I wanted to find an all-in-one tool like I had on my PC and Treo.

I also do NOT like the html based ones as all of that re-querying over and over is lame and they are not real-time. I also will not pay a monthly fee for that kind of service but will consider a one time fee. Another key requirement was the ability to reach people when they were mobile (via SMS) withOUT paying for/using SMS...

The following is the summary of my research:

:headbang2 BEST: EQO: FREE: (if you can get it to work) www.EQO.com is the only one that does all of the main messengers real time (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, GoogleTalk and Skype). I got it to work on my Treo by downloading the JVM and thought it was good (but don't need it as I have other Treo Apps that do it better). It only partially works on my RAZR (I am currently hitting a bug that limits it to only work on AIM and EQO). Because it can do AIM it can also do SMS to phones for free (if the contact sets up an AIM account and links it to their phone which I did and it works).

 GOOD: MIG33: FREE* (*it uses $ make VoIP call & send SMSs@$0.10/each and I don't use either); www.MIG33.com 's production version allows both Yahoo & MSN & MIG chat rooms. New BETA 3.01 now allows AIM but if your AIM contact goes mobile NO SMS is possible; Also now allows Photo Sharing but it hit a permissions error on my v3m. If they get the AIM/SMS and the Picture Sharing working I would rate this higher than EQO!

:) OK:Talkonaut:Free: Lets you connect to Goggle, Jabber, & Talkonaut (like Jabber).

There were some other ones out there that did 1 or 2 main IMs but the rest I saw didn't appear to handle enough simultaneous IMs.

There were also some commercial ones that did multiple for a cost but I excluded those from my analysis because they weren't free...

Since EQO didn't work, let me know how mig33 works for you. On top of the many days researching and testing all of the programs awhile back, I just spent multiple hours testing the new MIG33 beta to make sure it works before I recommended it to you (My original tests were on the old production version before they had AIM). I really like the beta MIG33 (except that it doesn't handle the free SMS via AIM...).

If it works for you please consider donating SU$ :fingers: as I am new to the forum and don't really have any SU$ :deal:

First, REALLY NICE FIND for people who use stuff like this.

Actually there are multiple options. I think that many phones are not multi-threaded so you can't run more than one app at once and even if you could it is really tedious to keep switching back and forth.

Just as an FYI, messaging applications run in the background (more or less). All MIDP 2.0 devices, in the least, should be capable of running all 3 apps at once.

I'll agree that I'm sure it's tedious for those who like to, or need to, run messaging apps though.

I will donate a whole bunch of SU bucks to ya for going into so much detail.

:D

Thanks guys for the donates as, while it was kinda fun doing the research, it was much more work than I expected. I am mainly a Palm phone guy but now that I have a new J2ME phone in the family I really wanted to try to get the same functionality as I have on my Treo.

I am pretty impressed with what is currently possible with Apps out there though know there is much more that can and needs to be done.

I don't like that Sprint still can't do Voice and Data simultaneously and that you have to kill apps when you need to take a phone call.

Regaring Lausifier's comment:Just as an FYI, messaging applications run in the background (more or less). When I want to switch I have to basically shut them down and then restart the App when I want to switch back which kinda bites.

Do you know a way of running more than one app at a time on a phone with an OS like the RAZR V3m (kinda like ALT-Tab on a PC)?

tried it and it did not work with aim. It would time out (do I have too many people?)

Not sure why it would be timing out. I am not a big AIM user and my tests only had 3 contacts.

I would create a new AIM account with only 1-2 contacts and try that first. If that doesn't work then you would know it isn't related to contacts.

I would also try it a few times, at different times, in case some server or something in the middle was down, etc.

If still having issues I would see if mig33 has a forum and log a post there. Feel free to put the link to that post here and I will try to follow it and see what I can do to help.

Did you try creating a new AIM account with only 1 or 2 contacts?

That should allow you to rule out whether it is related to the quantity of AIM contacts.

If that doesn't point to anything I unfortunately did not see any mig33 forums.

You might try sending them a message using the following:

I'm surprised no one else has spoken up about this. I apologize for the delay in response... I've been away-ish for a little while.

Anyway, you're right... apps need to be shut down to do anything else on your phone. Except for messaging applications. When you "exit" them, they continue to run (i.e., you remain signed on). When a new message comes in, you receive a text that basically tells you to launch the app to read your new message. When you have the app in the foreground, these texts are disabled.

ajskhan: OK - at this point I would be happy with just aim. I need both my SNs on one aim app... any suggestions, that work?Sorry AIM isn't working on mig33 for you. It does work on my RAZR V3m using the AIM account I created to test for you (I only had a few contacts). AIM was just added to the new BETA version of mig33 so maybe it doesn't work on all platforms but it does work on some. Your original post wanted all IMs not just AIM and note that both yahoo and MSN worked well on both the previous version and the BETA for me on the V3m. Both EQO and mig33 worked on AIM on my treo after I downloaded and installed the JVM. I guess they haven't truely figured out yet how to make these java apps really port to all J2ME compliant phones...

Unfortunately I don't have any personal experience with any other IM apps don't require you to reload a wap page over and over... PaPPaSmuRf777 try http://mobits.com/jad/Ajskhan, did you try the link that PappaSmurf posted?

In addition to EQO that web-page lists "IM+ v3.5" which purports to handle MSN, Yahoo!, AOL, ICQ, Jabber and Google Talk in one client. It does indicate that it is "Commercial" which may mean there is a fee but if it is a one time charge (after a trial period) I would consider that.

If I had more time right now I would try "IM+" for you and give you some feedback but I am really buried right now. I guess that might be a waste of time as just because it works on my phone doesn't mean it will work on yours (as we saw with MIG33).

[note: I edited my post because I was asking in the end if Y! and MSN worked but then saw that they did. Two out of three aint bad...]

Does the Apps need a particular setting or need to be loaded to a particular folder to keep running in the background when you close or exit them?

All the messaging apps I have tested fully close when I exit them. This includes MIG33, EQO, Talkonaut, Yahoo (the full $2.99/mo appp), and a few others.

I did find that while in MIG33 on AIM and someone calls it rings in and I can answer it. When I hung up I was right back in the middle of my IM converstation and that was nice. The best I could do was leave phone signed into all IMs and still recieve calls but had to log out of IMs to make calls.

What I want to be able to do is launch and log into the multi client IM then put it to the background. That way I can use the phone to recieve AND send calls but be "online" for people to IM me.

Is that possible?

Is there an "Alt-Tab" &/or way to exit them yet keep them running?

Glad to hear it. :headbang2

When I tested Talkonaut about a month ago it worked fine but didn't support AIM yet.

Looks like version 2.0 now supports AIM and MSN, Yahoo & ICQ.

I am not sure what the following means but will try to check it out:free IM chat using your existing Jabber or Google Talk account to all other IM networks, including MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and AIM. http://www.talkonaut.com
Sounds like you use your Google Talk or Jabber account to reach the other IM networks. Smells like there is some sort of pass-thru from Google talk or Jabber to the others IMs. Until I hear that the Google privacy issue is no longer an issue, I would NOT do it through Google. If I get a chance I will try it out again and maybe play with Jabber.

Glad you are fixed up and that you are happy!

EQO WORKS FOR THE SAMSUNG A920!! its so awesome, thank you so much!!You are more than welcome and glad to share the research. I also tested the following from http://mobits.com/jad/:

- MobUP 0.5; Flickr uploader. Free: I was unable to get this, nor any other picture App, to access the camera or stored photos on the Sprint V3m. Don't know if Sprint has different APIs or setups on the phone OS. I was hoping to figure out a way to make paying for Picturemail unecessary due to using Flickr or other Alternatives...

- Morange 2.7.0; Remote desktop, Mobile Surveilance, Mobile Blog, file sharing, push email, RSS, mobile IM, PIM Sync: I couldn't easily figure out to IM to the main IM networks and thus it might only work on its own proprietary IM network (if someone can verify main-IM network functionality please reply to this thread). Overall I really liked it's innovative interface and the way it switched to the many "sub-Apps" it contains (think an "all-in-one app" so you don't need to run multiple apps for email, IM, PIM, phone, etc). It included a PUSH email sub-App (I only briefly tested it with only Sprint Mail but it seemed promising). It also gave the V3m a basic PIM sub-App with calendar and ToDos. I didn't try to go to their site and do more with PIM sync nor work with the file sharing sub-App but if these work with your PC it has the awesome potential to make a phone much more like a full PIM if the sync works (think free Business Connection-Personal for non-PIM phones). I also didn't test the remote webcam sub-App or "desktop" capabilties (not sure what that meant or provides but suspect that it might integrate with a person's desktop like BC-Personal). I really liked that I could also use it to subcribe from my favorite RSS feeds. The RSS sub-App's features could have been better and hopefully will improve over time but to have all of that in an "All-in-one" app would be very powerful, especially if we can learn how to have it run in the background and allow you to use your phone for outgoing calls. It has the potential to fulfill my ideal goal of one (or a few) App(s) in the background notifying you of IMs (and even push for emails) yet also allowing you to use your phone... Looks like the best I can get so far is App(s) running and can recieve calls but if you want to call outbound you must shutdown the App(s) and then call and then restart App(s). I don't think it is too much to ask that a phone be always on and ready to recieve from multiple sources (phone calls, IMs, SMSs, emails) without all of this App switching...but this only works with the IM's you buy from sprint. Correct?I don't know if an app has to be "from Sprint" but if so, I would imagine that (if this was the case) there would be something different about the way the "Sprint Apps" are coded or how they are registered into the OS. It would be good to understand what is different between one type verses the other and hopefully it can be imulated in other apps.

I figure Apps running in the background should be possible as when I was testing at least one of the apps (I think it was MIG33) I tested calling in and the V3m notified me a call was coming in and allowed me to answer it. The App was either running or suspended in the background as when I hung up the call the IM app continued running and either the messages were coming in while on the call or they were batched and held and quickly transfered when I hung up as they were there when the App switched to the foreground. There was no delay and it did not go through a re-start of the App nor a re-login. I just wish I could figure out how to move an app to the background myself and make a call then when I hang up be back in the app ready to recieve IMs and emails.

Morange is absolute love. I installed it onto my A900M and it really unlocked some more use out of it that should hold me over until I get my Moto Q.

It has the ability to connect to your home webcam and remotely access files from your computer(if you alllow this) Morange also gives you 10mb of space for free to upload text documents, pictures, etc..

The destop app can also sync Morange with Outlook and update your Tasks, Calendar, and Contacts.

I am very impressed with this program, both the mobile and desktop versions.

Thanks for confirming that MoRange does indeed do the Outlook sync and accesses your local files.

From the documentation that is what I assumed but didn't really have the time to fully test. I guess I didn't really have a need to test since all of my phones have PCS Business Connection (personal edition) which gives me access to all of my files plus syncs with outlook, etc.

If anyone is able to get MoRange to access the major IM networks (yahoo, MSN, AIM, etc) please reply because then we can nuke all other apps and just use MoRange !
