Ok, so I went to check my minutes remaining, and It says I have used over 600 casual SMS's. I haven't changed my plan or anything, It even says I went over my unlimited SMS. W-T-F? Is the billing system just not estimating it right, or am I going to have to dispute it when my bill comes?

Could be a glitch in their system. I'd call or email.

I'd wait untill the bill posts. The website clearly states it's an estimate.

My usage estimate actually drops from day to day on occasion.

600 is a lot, so if you do call I would just verify that you still have unlimited text.

It could also be a Premium text so ask about that as well when you do call.

1. Make sure they are not premium text, those are not included
2. Make sure you had text the whole billing cycle, any text before it was added, will not count as unlimited.
3. Are you texting any International? Int text are not included, although there is a known billing issue with them right now.

If you can rule out any of those, wait til the bill prints and calls. CS can't give any credits or discuss unbilled usage.

Does "Unlimited SMS Text Messaging" show up under your plan details. If it shows under your plan details I wouldn't worry about it until the bill prints. If not, that could be a problem.

I've had it say that I went over my unlimited text plan before, but not that I had a bunch of "casual use sms". And I did end up getting charged for the ones I went "over" by. So watch it when the bill drops.

It's happened to me before a couple of times. It'll be corrected when your bill is issued.

I'd call and ask why this is occurring. I know a lot of people would wait to see if you're going to get billed - I wouldn't. I wouldn't get all upset at them, I'd just call and say you noticed something odd about the way your text messages are being counted.

Why now? Because if they need to fix a glitch, it's better for you if the glitch is fixed before you are billed. It's better for you if it never gets charged rather than having to get credited next month or the month after.

Do you have a business account, teh_toidi? I'm curious as I've seen many people writing about calling their reps, which I assume means they have a direct connection to the same Sprint Representative each time they call. Must you have a business account to get to speak to the same person each time? The reason I ask is because I have had billing issues each month for the past twelve months, which has resulted in my having to call up CS each month, sometimes multiple times a month. I'm considering leaving Sprint for the simple fact that I can never speak with the same rep, and I've had to argue too many times just to get a rep to simply look at the notes on my account!

I do realize that if I switch I will not get any more personalized customer service, but hopefully my billing disasters will be fewer and far between. However, I'd rather not switch, and having a direct rep to speak with would help out a lot. Long winded way to say not much, huh? ;)

I go through business customer care, but I have a 3rd party employee account(RS)

With my old phone sanyo rl 2500 i hada unlimited wireless web messages. I just got the M-1 (and love it except the battery) i noticed my account now reads casual sms messaging. Now when i ordered the phone in no way did I change my plan nor was i told any thing would change. If i am billed I will call and explain this to them then they can play the recorded conversation to thier hearts content. I have noticed that wireless web messaging was removed so i most likley will have to battle this out

wireless web messaging was short mail, the M1 has SMS (instant) text, they are different. You will get charged per message unless you get a texting plan

Something similair happened to me and I thought I had a plan to cover me.

I have 1000 text messages in my plan. Then when my bill came I got charged for 2 sms messsages. I ask what is the diffference between the two and i was told if you can not reply to a message, then it is a sms message and you will be charged 10 cents! Its that actially the case?

The difference between a text message and an sms message is the spelling. I assure you they are the exact same thing. If the rep you spoke to told you otherwise, it is because he had no idea and made something up.

As to the post at large regarding the person having unlimited messaging and getting charged, there is another possibility. If the unlimited messaging was added in the middle of a billing cycle it is only going to cover any messages that are done after the unlimited feature is actually added, anything used before it was added, [or like wise after it was removed if removed midcycle] would be charged the casual rate. At either rate, you will need to wait until after the cycle closes and your bill prints to make any disputes regarding the bill, as if there is a known issue, it is possible that it will be caught and corrected at the time the bill cycles.

I think dafydd is correct. I recently upgrade my phone and signed a new 2 yr contract, and the amount of text msgs i had before i re-signed has stayed the same. All txt msgs that I've sent and received since show over and as casual SMS messages.

We shall see when I get my bill next month.

Sprint Nextel hikes text fee again, ETF remains in effect

By Kelly Hill
Story posted: August 21, 2007 - 12:47 pm EDT

Sprint Nextel Corp. is upping its casual text messaging rate by five cents as of Oct. 1, from 15 cents per message to 20 cents per message. And the carrier said the change—which is permissible under its terms of service—will not allow customers to slip out of their contracts without paying an early termination fee.

The news is notable since Sprint Nextel increased its casual text messaging fee from 10 cents to 15 cents just 10 months ago. At the time, the carrier said the move would allow affected customers to get out of their service contracts without paying an ETF, as the changes affected service costs.

This time, however, it appears Sprint Nextel’s current terms of service do allow for changes to text messaging fees.

According to Sprint Nextel’s current contract terms, only a “material” change in rates would allow customers to abandon contracts without paying an ETF, and the carrier said the most recent change does not make the grade.

“This casual text messaging rate change does not qualify any of our customers for any kind of early termination fee waiver,” said Sprint Nextel spokeswoman Roni Singleton.

According to the carrier, casual text messaging fees starting next month will be 20 cents per message sent or received. Overage SMS charges for customers who have a texting package will also increase, from 10 cents to 20 cents per message.

Sprint Nextel was the first carrier last year to raise its casual text messaging fees from the longtime industry standard of 10 cents per message to 15 cents per message. Shortly after the move, the rest of the nation’s major carriers also raised their casual text messaging fees from 10 cents to 15 cents.

Sprint Nextel’s Singleton said that the company began notifying customers of the increase to 20 cents per message in their bills for this month.

I have always had unlimited, but 20 cents per message is just obscene.

casual sms is when you dont have a text messaging add on, on your plan. If you have sero you can get unlimited text messaging for free.

well signing up for sero now includes unlimited text messaging the last time I checked. If you don't have it now you may have to call sprint up and ask them what they can do for you.

Also check the SERO discussions as there is a lot more information on this and anything related to SERO.

If you have SERO, the unlimited text should be already on your plan. If it's not, just call sprint up and they'll take care of that for you.

last month. I just went to the store and got one of the reps to give me the SERO plan. He then told me to call customer service to add "unlimited text" to my plan, because he couldn't do it at the store for some reason.

Another thing to remember is even with unlimited SMS, you'll still get hit for a $0.20 charge per International SMS. It's cool that it works, but look out for the extra charge!

Not that it really helps the situation, but I had a similar problem. I had 4298 CASUAL text messages, at .20 cents a pop. That ended up to be about $1000 dollars added onto my bill. I had also noticed they had temporarily removed Unlimited TXT and Picture Message as well. A call to customer service changed all that though. I'm on the Sero 500 Plan by the way.

Dang, do you have your e-mail forward a copy to your phone? That is a lot for one month.
