Cingular to take AT&T brand, but new name not allowed on car

WELCOME, N.C. -- A sponsorship dispute is pitting one of NASCAR's most respected team owners against one of its biggest revenue sources, leaving officials hustling to work out a compromise two weeks before the start of the season.

Richard Childress' No. 31 car, which is driven by Jeff Burton, is sponsored by cell phone service provider Cingular. But that company has been bought by AT&T, which is phasing out the Cingular brand name.

Under normal circumstances, that wouldn't be a problem. The team would just slap a few shiny new logos on the car and hit the track.

But when it comes to selling cell phones to race fans, it's not that easy.

When Nextel signed a 10-year, $700 million deal to become the title sponsor of NASCAR's top series before the 2004 season, it lobbied NASCAR to ban rival telecommunications companies from becoming sponsors. An exemption was granted for existing telecom sponsors such as Cingular and Alltel, which were allowed to remain in the series.

But with Cingular changing its name, Nextel officials say Richard Childress Racing isn't allowed to put AT&T logos on its car.

"If the name changes, then that changes the game," said Dean Kessel, Sprint Nextel's director of NASCAR Nextel Cup series marketing. "Cingular and Alltel were grandfathered in and everybody knew the rules of engagement early on."

But even if the name changes, isn't it still the same company? Nextel, after all, has merged with Sprint since signing on as NASCAR's sponsor. The series name remains the Nextel Cup, at least for now.

"We are still working closely with the folks at RCR," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's vice president of racing operations. "We are in the process of working with them. They understand the rules that we have in our partnership with Nextel. We are positive we will be able to come to an amicable relationship with those guys and look forward to 2007."

When NASCAR struck its deal with Nextel, team owners complained the telecommunications sponsorship ban was far too restrictive. O'Donnell said NASCAR is sensitive to owners' needs.

"At the end of the day, we need team sponsors," O'Donnell said. "The team realizes that and NASCAR realizes that."

Childress, a longtime friend of NASCAR's ruling France family and former car owner for the late Dale Earnhardt, isn't one to air his dirty laundry in public. But he doesn't want to be left scrambling to find a new sponsor on short notice, either.

"All that's being handled right now with NASCAR," Childress said. "I can't really comment on it. It's just [up to] NASCAR right now. Nextel's a great series sponsor, and we can work this thing out."

But they haven't told you no, right?

"All I can say is they're working it out now," Childress said.

Burton said his sponsor wants to stay put -- if allowed to.

"We have a sponsor that wants to be involved in the sport, and they want to try to find a way to do it," Burton said. "They're extremely committed to being part of it, and it's going to require some finesse."

Lenox To Sponsor No. 31
Lenox Industrial Tools announced today that the East Longmeadow, Mass., based company will be the primary sponsor of Jeff Burton’s No. 31 NASCAR Cup car during the newly announced Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at nearby New Hampshire International Speedway on July 1.

Lenox, a leading manufacturer of premium band saw blades, power tool accessories, and torches, has partnered with Richard Childress Racing and driver Burton, New Hampshire’s all-time race winner in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, in a multi-year sponsorship agreement beginning with the 2007 NASCAR Cup season.

In addition to the Lenox Industrial Tools 300, Lenox will also serve as the primary sponsor of Burton’s Chevrolet for the May 5 NASCAR Cup race at Richmond International Raceway.

Lenox will be represented throughout the season as an associate sponsor on the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet as well. The Lenox logo will appear on the rear quarter panels of the car just behind the rear wheels.

"Becoming a sponsor of the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing team and Jeff Burton is an exciting step for our company,” said Eric Pinkham, Director of Motorsports for Lenox Industrial Tools. “Both Richard and Jeff are proven winners on and off the racetrack, and we couldn't be happier about joining forces with them. Lenox has been involved in NASCAR since 2003, and we are looking forward to strengthening our commitment to the sport and its fans through this partnership with RCR. There are certainly no teams more committed to quality, innovation, and extreme performance than Lenox Industrial Tools and Richard Childress Racing."

I think you're maybe missing my point here :deal:

Ok, great! So he has a sponosr :indiff: Why the hell is NEXTEl pushing out paying sponsors. They shouldn't care if RCR feilds a AT&T car or if it is sponsored by SPAM! Sponsor $ are sponsor $ how exectly does it hurt SPRINT/NEXTEL to have AT&T on a car. Esp since it's only a name change. Dumb! Dumb! Dumb! So, I guess if Burton would have won the championship last season Alltel would have been banned too :irked:

I wonder the same thing, In the Busch Series from time to time you see a miller car but it's not a full time sponsor.
But if you have ever looked close at Burtons and Newmans driver suits the Nextel badge is in black and white, other drivers have them in the yellow.
I guess it's all part of big business and I don't understand that stuff.

I yjink you start down a slippery slope when the series sponsor starts telling team owners who the can or cannot use as sponsors. Esp when the team owners have no say in who the series sponsor is. I call BS :irked:

That's often the way with corporate sponsorship. It's BS yeah, but that's the world we live in now.

i would ban them from being a sponsor too. its a conflict of interest for them. why let cingular get promotion on YOUR series?? Especially when you can get the same amount of money OR MORE, from another company that doesn't conflict with your interest in the wireless phone industry.

To quote Austin Powers, "Are you Mad"

Let me break it down like this:

1-It is very well documented that NASCAR team negotiate and in general sign long term deals with sponsors

2-Who the hell is NEXTEL to decide who provides money to make sure there cars to fill the field.

Think about it, If you are spending money to sponsor a sport. You not only have an obligation to spend money to keep it going, but you also need to make sure that you look at the big picture. Banning a big name sponsor, hurts the sport. What would happen if Lowes' Motorspeedway decided that Tony Stewat wasn't allowed to drive the Home Depot car there. Let's say that happens, and Home Depot petitions Atlanta Motorspeedway (Home Depot is based in Atlanta) to ban the Lowes' car. This is krap! If you are the title sponsor, you get more coverage than any car in the race!
