View Full Version : Accuracy of EVDO maps - SC?

CDH

I live in South Carolina and there is good Vision access in my area. The maps on the Sprint website indicate that EVDO is not in any of the major centers of my state, but is active in major cities of Georgia, TN, and NC.

Is this accurate or has EVDO possibly rolled-out here but just isn't shown on the maps?

Thanks,
CDH.

I don't think they update the map every time they add a city/tower to the network. Your best bet is to ask them at a local Sprint store, as they're more likely to know, and from my understanding they also have more up-to-date maps.

I was hoping that someone in one of the major centers of SC (Greenville/Spartanburg, Columbia, or Charleston) might know if EVDO was active in their area. Anyone, anyone?

If other state roll-outs are anything to go by it seems like smaller places (like Florence - sorry wBkM85) come later, if ever.

I would have thought that the online maps would be more up-to-date than the printed ones in the store, but I'm happy to be wrong. The staff at my local store seem to have a high turnover and therefore not a lot of knowledge about new products/services, but it is worth a try I suppose. If I get a blank look I'll know that I'll have to ask elsewhere.

Thanks,
CDH.

The Power coverage tool is the most up to date information any CSR will have, it's acctually what we use and has phased out IMPACT for determing coverage. Probably the only other dept. that might have more information would be level two tech with access to latest tower information.

I actually asked the rep in the store, and she seemed a lot more knowledgable than those at the same store in the past. The answer is "we don't know when EVDO will be available in SC, but there appears to be some legal trouble" whatever that means. She also said "we were told Q1 2007" but she seemed dubious.

Thanks for the responses,
CDH.

Once you fill in an address, you'll note it maps it with a URL that begins with http://coverage.sprintpcs.com/IMPACT.jsp? The coverage map uses Impact.

I asked level 2 tech support yesterday, and was told Charleston, SC would receive EVDO, albeit Rev. A, by "the end of the year". Very frustrating, especially since Verizon launched EVDO here last month and has EVDO in all the major SC cities. Alltel and has EVDO coverage in Columbia, and ATT has HSDPA in Columbia also. What is Sprint's problem?

Sprint allows data roaming. If Verizon or Alltel has EVDO there, use it.

I know there is no EVDO along 95 from when I leave out of NC, through SC, all the way to Hinesville, GA.

What do you mean by data roaming. I have the power vision pkg.

EVDO just seems to have been turned on in Charleston... I'm getting 600-800 kbps now instead of the 100-120 with 1x :tu:

Hmmm... in the upstate I keep getting the Ev icon on my Q but when I then use data services it reverts to 1x.

Sprint does allow EV-DO roaming with alltel, but only 1x with VZW. VZW has EVDO in my area and i have tried forcing roaming and setting my phone to EVDO roaming and i get nothing.

Columbia has EVDO, though the maps don't reflect it. Have for a few months now. I live near Augusta, GA, and travel I-20 to Columbia a fair amount. I get the EV symbol starting somewhere around the Pelion exit (exit 39) and on into Columbia. Might get it a little sooner than that exit, but I know for a fact it works there. For the majority of what I use data on my phone for 1X is fine, though EV would be even finer. (c: Not horrible for email, Facebook and the occasional MySpace visit.

I learned a while back that the EVDO map coverage, and Sprint reps can be wrong. When I looked at the coverage map, it showed I was not covered for EVDO in my area. I called Sprint and they confirmed this. I was wondering if it was worth getting the Sanyo 9000 if I couldn't get EVDO. Well, I got the phone anyway, and I'm glad I did, EVDO worked fine :headbang2 so the maps aren't accurate all the time.

Sprint has data roaming agreements with other carriers (Alltel being one, also the reason some get it in SC) and those agreements aren't noted on their maps. So you may very well have EVDO in an area that doesn't say it does on the map, but chances are it's most likely data roaming on another carrier's data network. No extra fee for that to worry about or anything, though.

Ditto for me.. I went to Myrtle a couple weeks ago, their EVDO is SMOKING. I had 1xx when I left, and I was disappointed when I was coming back here, only to find out we had it! WoOt!

Where abouts you at? Over here in Mt. P myself..

The real problem with the coverage maps is that they are probably only accurate to within 25 miles or so. This is especially true for the fringe areas.

i just got a moto q and it automatically picked up altells evdo. you need to check your settings and change it to data roam only. i talked to a local tower guy and he said sprint should have it here at the end of 07 or jan 08.

Yes, here in the Upstate EV-DO seems to be live (though I'm not sure if its Alltel or Sprint). I have a tower very near my house and for a week or two I got the EV-DO symbol on my Q but data connections were all 1x. For a few weeks now EV-DO seems to be working.

I talked to a friend and seems it is all roaming unless you are very close to charlotte, there u stand a good chance of being on a sprint owned tower with broadband. Seems everywere else in the state is roaming data, but due to agreemants you don't pay.

It all boils down to the big players..verizon, sprint, alltel are sharing in order to cover an area and play fair...seems like a monopoly to me. Pretty soon we'll have one cellphone company, wonder who the winner will be..

Ok let me rephrase that...It is not data roaming we get here. It is but isn't. We can roam on verizon and in some places altell. We don't see roaming on the screen for the simple reason they have an agreement. If you go into the phones diagnostic screens and see what tower it is, you can then see that it isn't an actual sprint tower there. Only place for sure has sprint towers providing broadband is up around charlotte area.
