Harvick calls Teresa a "deadbeat owner that doesn't come to track"

CONCORD, N.C. -- After a rival driver called Teresa Earnhardt a "deadbeat owner,'' Dale Earnhardt Jr. was put in the uncomfortable position of sticking up for the stepmother he's often at odds with.

At a Tuesday night media session designed to outline Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s 2007 season goals, Junior was pointedly asked to respond to comments Kevin Harvick made earlier in the day about the perception that Teresa Earnhardt is an absentee team owner.

"It's hard when you have what I call a deadbeat owner that doesn't come to the racetrack,'' Harvick told reporters during a stop at Richard Childress Racing.

"You always see Richard Childress. You always see Chip Ganassi. All these owners, they all come to the racetrack. It's not just a money pit that somebody says, 'Well, I can make money off of Dale Jr. I can make money off of Dale Earnhardt.' "

Earnhardt, who is in the final year of his contract at DEI and currently participating in tense negotiations for a new deal, squirmed on the podium as he was asked to respond.

"You're killing me,'' Earnhardt grumbled. "That's ridiculous. I don't think there is a comment for that remark.''

But instead of letting the moment pass, Earnhardt -- often too open and honest for his own good -- attempted to defend Teresa, who took over Dale Earnhardt's company after his 2001 fatal accident on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

"Like I said in the past, with everything that's happened, not just to the company but to the family over the past five years, she's had a full plate,'' he said. "The things that she's responsible for, willingly and unwillingly, are very important. For a long time, the battle with [Earnhardt's] autopsy photos, all those things, that's just the tip of the iceberg of things that she's been responsible for.

"That's probably been one reason why she hasn't been as visible at the racetrack and whatnot. But she's taking care of things that are much [more] important.''

Earnhardt and his stepmother have had an up-and-down relationship for most of his life, and the frostiness between the two was revealed publicly last month when Teresa questioned his commitment in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

"Right now the ball's in his court to decide on whether he wants to be a NASCAR driver or whether he wants to be a public personality,'' she said in the Dec. 14 story.

Junior finally responded two weeks ago, when he said their relationship "ain't a bed of roses,'' that the two had not spoken since she made her remark, and that Teresa would factor heavily in whether or not he re-signs with his father's company.

The two have since spoken, although Junior characterized the conversation as a brief one. And he said contract negotiations are ongoing, and he hoped to "have something in the next couple of months.''

Although Teresa Earnhardt was at the news conference, she made only a 49-second opening remark to introduce Max Siegel, DEI's new head of global operations. As Siegel stepped to the microphone, Teresa quietly slipped off the stage and disappeared behind a black curtain.

Siegel then asked the large media contingent to keep the questions focused on the upcoming season and away from the contract controversy.

"With respect to contract negotiations with Dale Jr., I wanted to make it very clear that DEI has every intention of re-signing Dale to a long-term deal,'' Siegel said. "We're in good ongoing discussions and hope to announce something soon.''

The #3 car isnt controlled by Teresa. I dont know all the details of what she has or has not dine, but she never seemed a "warm" person after Dale Sr died.

I can understand mourning your loss, but she just doesnt give the apperance of the race team being anything more than a business for her, and she seems to want to maximize profits. Thats fine untill you seem to be calling out your step-son for wanting a contract in line with his draw to the sport and sponsorship. Dale Jr is a huge name in NASCAR and has to get DEI a ton of extra sponsorship revenue on his name alone.

I'd love to see Dale Jr drive a yellow and blue Wrangler sponsored #3 car for one race. He already has an endorsement deal with Wrangler, and it would be an awesome tribute to his dad.

Richard Childress would give Jr. a ride in a heartbeat. Hell Sr. drove for Richard while DEI was up and running so why not. It's sad that it's come to this. She's the Yoko Ono of racing.

Childeress has said publicly that he will not bring back the number 3 car anytime in the future.

Junior would only go the RCR to drive the number 3, If it is not brought back, there would be no reason to go there.

Homestly, I'd like to see junior drive the 18 for JGR... I know it's a long shot, but that would be an awsome line up:

20-Stewart
18-Earnhardt Jr.
11- Hamlin

Oh to dream... :Popcorn2:

And it would serve her right if that's what happens. How long do you think DEI would last without Dale Jr? Do you think she's trying to sabatoge her way OUT of DEI?

DEI will go on... The still have the "drunk" Truex  Menard and a couple development drivers they can live on! If Junior was to leave (unlikely), it will hurt no doubt.

maybe if she would show up at the track DEI would be able to compete for a championship instead of just a rousch/hendrix/gibbs race every year. If I remember correctly the only teams to win championships since the chase was brought in.

Don't forget Childress! RCR had two cars in the chase last season...

Doesnt Dale Jr have a Busch series team now? I could see a slight chance that budweiser and wranglers would sponsor a Cup car team for him.

Its too bad when you think "family" will do something for you that no other driver wouldn't. I hope Jr gets control of DEI sooner than later........ he surely couldn't do any worse then his step-mom at doing PR for the team. When you think about it, NASCAR is as much about PR as it is actually winning races. Sponsors want to see their car's winning races, but they want an organization that gives their product a good name above all else.

Ain't that the truth!

Auto racing is only one of very few things in the world that throw money into a black hole faster than owning a boat. PR, and the profits that advertisers make from marketing that PR, is what keeps a race team running.

Usually it is the driver who does something stupid that disrupts the good PR (Stewart's hot temper, Busch (and others) run-ins with the law). In this case, the public easily sides with Dale Jr. Theresa could of received the grieving widow sympathy, but she just comes across as too damn cold...
