Hi guys,
I have a PPC-6700 and I do quite a bit of tethering with it. Usually I get average speeds of 400-500 kbs. Do the Sprint dedicated broadband cards (Ones that come with a separate charge of $50) give you better speed than the PPC-6700? Or will they give you the same speed as the 6700?

I used to have card for work..until few days ago. Download speed is a little better then 6700 and upload speed is really fast with New REV-A. If you always gotta be online and have little extra cash go with a Card!

The 6700 will slow you down a bit, yes. Maybe 10-20% overhead (or - ick - 280k max via bluetooth)

I know it's not the same but I get 400-high 500's on my 700p but on my work card I get about 1mps esp down in McAllen TX.

There shouldn't be any difference in an area that hasn't been upgraded to RevA (except when using BT). None of the current phones are able to use the RevA speeds when tethered though. - sheureka

Well to give you an idea:

I used to have an A920: would be able to pull around 1.2MBit download on it

On my Fusic: was around the same as the samsung

PPC 6700: typically was doing 1.4-1.6MBit

S720 data card: normally I get anywhere up to 1.8MBit or so on the data card. Granted lately that fluctuates more since they upgraded us to revA it's actually been around 1.5-1.6MBit download steady vs the others bursting.

Hope this bit of information helps in your decision.

Whenever I run sumultaneous speed tests at www.dslreports.com/mspeed (http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed) with a Sanyo 8400 and Novatel S720, I get 8400 speeds in the 190-210 kbps range and S720 speeds in the 575-650 kbps range. The latency on both is about the same at 190-230 ms. I am in an EVDO Rev 0 area with a signal strength of -82 to -88 dBm.

My MM7500 is a lot faster than my PPC6700, but I think that's because the Sanyo's reception is so much better. I just bought a Wilson amplifier and am curious to see if it makes any difference in my house. The antenna (on my car) is buried under about 4 feet of snow so I haven't had a chance to test it out :hee: - sheureka

I cannot comment on the PPC6700. I was just validating what other data card users have found. The cards seem to get better speeds than the phones.
Sorry about the snow. I'll be cycling in 82 degree sunshine today.:behappy:

Well I got my M610 today so once my usb cable for that arrives end of the week I'll do a quick test to benchmark against as well, hopefully it'll give you some further ideas on what kind of speeds to expect also (as the handset radios appear to definitely have been improving lately now).

Have those of you with the PPC6700 tried Skype mobile on it? It would drop the rates for international calls tremendously, but I am curious about the quality on an EVDO network.

The Skype Mobile application is suppose to work on the PPC6700, www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/brand_other_beta.html (http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/brand_other_beta.html)

As stated here's a speedtest of the m610 also while tethered:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 901 kbps (112.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 118 kbps (14.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Also I have used skype on my ppc6700 and presently have it installed. It usually works fine, although it does get slightly more latency vs my laptop which is using a RevA novatel S720.

Is there a difference in the speeds tethered to the 610 vs using the S720 fron the same location and time?

What do you find you Jitter to be when on a skype call with the S720? Mine seems to be 20, which results in a lot of warble. I am trying to fugure out whether there is a setting that would reduce that.

Well I'm sitting bout half mile or so just off an evdo revA tower. My S720 pulls -60-70dBm signal nearly always. That being said the M610 has good reception but not that good. As such yes the data card obviously does alot better speeds than the m610. Heck tethered the ppc6700 gets better speeds than the 610 does.

Also with the S720 at times I do notice sometimes it does fade out kinda with skype. Typically that won't happen for me barely ever. I think it really also depends on signal coverage too, if you don't get a decent enough signal you're going to run in stream issues regardless of program.

I think it really also depends on signal coverage too, if you don't get a decent enough signal you're going to run in stream issues regardless of program. That hasn't solved it for me. We have a Starbucks directly across the street from a Sprint antenna in Naples where I get a -52dBm signal, yet I still get a Jitter rating of 20, which, unfortunatley, is not good enough for a smooth Skype conversation.

I think it may be something I did in the process of trying to optimize speed toying with DRTCP021.exe, ##DATA#, ##MSL#, etc., as the Skype convrsations seemed better before I began screwing around. Now the Jitter rating never waivers from 20 when on a call (you can see it as you mouse over the Skype calling screen), almost as if I had fixed it there.
