View Full Version : Creating your own free Ringtones

This is the method I use to create my own ring tones.

1) Create an audio clip from a song/sound you want to use as a ring tone using whatever audio editing/capturing software familiar to you.

2) Open Windows Movie Maker program.

3) Capture a blank video with the length slightly longer than the audio clip using the setting "video for dial-up access (38 kbps)"

4) Import your sound clip, and edit the blank video to match the same length as your sound clip.

5) Save your finished video with imported audio.

6) Convert your saved video into .3g2 using the program and settings from this post: Originally Posted by LouS

In super, I set my video scale to 320x240 since the M1 can playback this resolution. I set the bitrate at 144kbps to get good quality video. Leave the other video settings at default. Make sure you set the output to 3g2 (Sony Ericsson is ok) and leave the codecs at default settings. For audio I use 22050 Hz sampling, 2 channels (stereo), and 48 kbps. Then basically hit the encode button. ** The sound quality can most likely be improved by changing the settings because there is no real video to worry about. DO NOT DISABLE VIDEO**

7) Transfer the .3g2 converted file into the 100SANYO folder on your M1.

8) On the M1, go to Tools -->Filemanager -->DCIM --> 100SANYO to access your file and set it as a ringtone.

****I believe the final .3g2 file has to be under 500kb in order to set it as a ringtone.***

Here is one I created ---> Sample (http://home.comcast.net/~ciscor77/Sample.3G2)

After more experimenting, it is possible to use still pictures instead of blank video.

1) Import a picture into Windows Movie Maker.

2) In Windows Movie Maker, go to Tools --> Options --> Advanced Tab and increase the "Picture duration" seconds to longer than your audio clip.

3) Match the length of the picture with the audio.

4) go to "Step 5" in previous post.

Here is another ringtone using this method --> Sample 2 (http://home.comcast.net/~ciscor77/Love.wmv.3G2)

yea it works, I tried it with QT pro, it's a good option for those who don't have vision and the sound is pretty good like the op said you'll have to mess around with the settings a little to get better sound quality

Sweet, i'll have to check it out once i get home. Considering i dont' have window movie maker i'll have to figure out how to do it in QT pro then.

This should be a sticky for the the M1. Just finally tried it and it worked wonderfully. Got 3 new ringers on my phone now. :D

Here is a blank 1 min video clip (http://home.comcast.net/~ciscor77/Blank1min.wmv) if ya don't want to use any static pictures or other animations/videos.

1) Download the blank 1 min video clip (http://home.comcast.net/~ciscor77/Blank1min.wmv)
2) Import into Windows Movie Maker
3) Add your own audio clip and trim
4) Follow rest of directions in my original post

When you save your pre-3g2 file from Windows Movie Maker, be sure to save it at High Quality. It is hard to get a great a sounding ringtone if you compress a compressed file.

**things to remember - The end result has to be a video clip of some sort. Don't disable video when using Super, just minimize the video settings so you can increase the audio settings for better quality. Also, the total .3g2 file size has to be less than 500kb. Again, don't disable video when using Super**

I just resampled my MP3s to mono 64kbps and picked my favorite spots and ended them at 36 seconds. 280kb average for the songs then uploaded them. Kinda nice having 40MB's to play with. They sound good & loud.

Unless my uploader converts them to .QCP or .3G2 or something.

I tried this and it works great. Thanks!

Question though.. How do I make regular ringtones without video? If it doesn't have a video or photo, does it still have to have the .3g2 extension or does it have to be something else? If so, what file extension do I need to convert it to? Also, is there a limit on file size for a regular ringtone and how long the ringer file should be?

TIA,

Sal

Only way to use normal MP3 clips without a video or picture is to send them to yourself using an uploader.

My method above is strictly for the people trying to save a buck by not paying to download.

I think the mp3 clip still has to be under 500kb.

Thanks. I'm all for saving money. The reason why I wanted to know if I could use audio only was because I wanted to use a higher quality ringtone. That's why I wanted to do it without a photo or video. I did a couple of video ringtones and both the video and audio were a bit sketchy because I had to compress the entire file below 500k.

i have found a very easy and effective way to create and apply ringtones.
1. use a sound editor to create the ringtone you want on your phone and save it.
2. go to http://media-convert.com/convert/
browse for your clip you just made. then pick "purevoice file (qcp)
click to convert.
after you download your qcp file
3. go to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ and put in your phone number and browse for you qcp file and click upload file.
4. you'll get a text message. open it and follow the link and bada-bing! you have your ringtone.

also you can use step 3 and 4 to download free games to your phone.

Thanks! That's quick and effective.

I've got a question though. What are you using as a file before you convert it to the qcp file? Are you starting with a .wav or mp3? What compression rate are you using? I tried using a 8,000 8 bit mono .wav file and ended up with a 51kb qcp file.

Thanks. I'm looking at the FAQ right now and it looks geared towards iTunes users. I don't use iTunes because my mp3 player (Sandisk Sansa) doesn't use M4a files. Can I substitute mp3 files instead and use something to convert them to AAC files?

BTW.. Here's the link to the FAQ instructions that I'm looking at.

use this guide, its a bit old but it works. quicktime pro works best but the other option will work too. you'll have to play with the bitrate for each song, i usually use between 50-90 for good sound.

I figured it out today. Thanks!

It's rather easy. I downloaded the ITunes software even though I don't buy songs off of iTunes. I uploaded mp3 files to iTunes, shortened them and then saved them as AAC/M4a files. Then, I used the uploader to upload them to my phone. Very slick and easy.

I also noticed that the files don't have to be under 500 kb. I uploaded and used a couple of 600 kb+ files. I don't know what the limit on file size is, but it's not 500 kb's.

Stupid question, but am I going to get nabbed with text message charges using the uploader? I'm wondering because I don't have a text message package.

sitlet

you should have 100 text messages a month before they start charging you. and even after that i believe its only 10 cents a message.

Even if you had text services on your phone, wouldn't you also get charged to download the file if you don't have an internet plan on your phone?

I know with sprint it is like .03/kb. And a few hundred kb ringtones adds up pretty fast.

I have the vision package, but I don't think that I have any kind of text package. I think that it's pay as you go at .15¢ per text (sent or received).

Yeah.. 500-600 kb's per file at .03¢ per kb would get expensive fast.

Do we have up to the full 1gb for ringtones if we wanted or are we limited at all? I've got about 30 ringtones loaded so far.

Also.. Why can't we upload AAC/M4A files with the data port like with the video ringers? Is it something that sprint does so they can sell ringtones?

well im pretty sure most people have a vision plan. whats the point of buying an m1 if you are not going to use the vision and tv? thats like buying a ferrari and never going over 30 mph.

ive always had 100 free texts a month since i switched to sprint in 2002. im pretty sure if you have a vision package you get 100 a month.

and with the m1 i believe you can upload ringers into the media folder, then go to tools-file manager and assign it as a ringer.

Not necessarily. I'm thinking about dumping the vision package because I hardly use it. Most of the time, it's just a novelty to me other than checking the weather. I don't care about watching movie trailers or anything. Everything seems to be al a carte anyway and it would be much more expensive than $15 a month to get access to a lot of the channels. Even then, I think they're a ripoff. The only thing that I'd miss without the vision package is being able to upload something or use the picture mail.

I like this phone because it not only works great as a phone (loud ringer, great reception/voice quality, great BT and speakerphone). It also looks and feels nice to me. I love that I can play mp3's on it and it has a really nice camera on it for a cell phone. My wife has the Fusic and the only thing that I like about hers better, besides the case options, is that it has the built in FM transmitter. That is a cool feature.

Nope. That won't work. I tried uploading the m4a ringers that I created to the media and the dcim folder and the phone doesn't give you the option to set it as a ringer. It only works with the .3g2 video files. I wonder if I can convert my m4a's to a 3g2 extension even though it's an audio file and not a video file?

The only thing that I don't like about the video ringtones is that you end up with crappy video and audio. Using the 500kb's for audio only gives you a lot better sounding ringer.

BTW.. I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I've uploaded M4a's as ringers with the uploader that were in excess of 650 kb's and they work just fine. I don't know where you got the 500 kb limit from?

sitlet
02-08-2007, 05:16 PM
yes i believe you can create a movie file and use it as a ringer. just make a black frame for the video so it doenst take up space. and for the audio, set it to aac, and use a bitrate between 50-100, and it should sound exactly the same as an aac ringer without video

Step By Step Guide to Make mp3 Ringtones

1. Set up an account at funformobile.com
2. google audacity download and install into your computer
3. go into settings and output to your desktop
4. google LAME mp3 encoder
5. Save it instead of running it and save to your desktop
6. Click on the LAME zip folder and extract to your desktop
7. Open Audacity and click on edit and scroll down to pref.
8. Then where it says mp3 export setup click find library
9. When it says it needs to locate the library click yes

11. You can now encode files as mp3
12. Now open Audacity and click new and find where your music is
13. edit the track to where you want and then after all editing is done click on the export as mp3 and save to your desktop
14. Now go into your funformobile.com account and upload the file to your account
15. After uploading to your account, from your phone go into the same account ( funformobile) and login
16. Go into your myfunblog and then click on where it says My Mobile Tone and it should be right there and you can then download it right from there
