I have a Treo 700wx. In my city (San Angelo, TX) Sprint just offers 1x, however Alltel offers EVDO here. When I use my internet I get stuck with Sprint's 1x service. I want to be able to use Alltel's EVDO, but I have no idea how. I have tried to turn my phone to "Roaming Only", but no luck still 1x. I'm almost 100% positive that you can roam on Alltel's network, however I don't know if it should automatically switch to the fastest connection. Are there any updates available that enables this? Anything I can do?
TIA!

I don't know if this works on the Treo...but dial *2 and ask for a PRL update

Yeah, I upadated the PRL. Now, if I am in Roaming Only then I can access EVDO. :) However, when I have "Allow Roaming" or "Home-Network only" it will access 1x. I know that "Home-Network only" wouldn't work, but is it possible for when I am in "Allow Roaming" to allow EVDO to work over Sprint's 1x? I thought it would automatically switch to the fastest because Alltel and Sprint had a deal, but is it only when 'roaming'?
(BTW - I have SERO 500 plan. That includes data roaming, correct?)

Call *2 on your Sprint handset and when asked what you want to do, say "PRL Update". Make sure you wait until the lady quits talking and say it fully. It will send you to a person and just say "I want to flag my account for a PRL Update", if asked why just simply say for better reception for something like that. They will tell you to wait about 15 minutes and then call *2 again to update your phone. It will say something like "updating your phone, please wait." and "Your update is complete" when it is complete. Reset your phone and it should be updated.

I thought it would automatically switch to the fastest because Alltel and Sprint had a deal, but is it only when 'roaming'?As long as it can find a Sprint signal it won't automatically switch to Alltel, even if it's faster. The only way you'll get Alltel's faster speed in that circumstance is to set your phone for roaming only. - sheureka

I have been unable to roam with alltel ever since they started with EVDO roaming. I had no problems with 1x but now all I get is Data service is unavailable in your area or a registration problem. It picks up alltel EVDO signal but can't access it!

Could I just keep it on Roam Only all the time? Is there a limit by the number of minutes you can use off their network? I don't think there is the 50% rule anymore.
Also, SERO plans include voice and data roaming, right?

Do you have to set your phone to "Roam Only"? Or does it just go to Alltel's EVDO when in reach?

Since I get a Sprint signal where I am I have to set my phone to roam only - the phone will always go to the Sprint signal, even if another carrier is faster. - sheureka

yall should be glad you can data roam at all. I'm still working through some severe network issues here in north florida. No such thing as data roaming just yet. :(
