With the phone closed and the keyguard off hold down the volume down button.

Or up. It's only 8 seconds after you take your finger off the keys. Just hold it down for as long as you need it.

This seems like the most simple thing but it doesn't work on my phone. So with the phone closed, you turn off the keyguard then hold down the volume down or up button on right side for 8 seconds and then it comes on, right?

Yes, you MUST clear your "missed alerts", otherwise the vol up/dwn button just scroll through your "missed alerts" on your outer display.
it will not work for me. :indiff:

still doenst work. key guard is off, but the message never appears. :indiff:Does your flash work when you take a picture? Make sure Keyguard is off and alerts are cleared. When the flip is closed you have to push any side button to turn on the backlight then just hold down the up or down volume button for a second or two.

Oh, that's the trick.
You have to first press (and release) a button to "wake up" the phone and THEN press and hold down the volume key.
Thanks. Nice trick.

Your phone could be defective. If it was me I would take it into the store cause it would drive me nuts. lol

If have your Key Guard set to "off", then you still must clear (dismiss) out all of your "missed Alerts". Once you do that, close the phone, and press and hold the "Volume Down" button. Your flashlight should go on.

Try turning the keyguard off in the settings menu, then close the phone and hold down the volume button.

If you really need the flashlight, go to the camcorder and turn on the video light.

You need to "press and hold" the down volume button, not "hit" it

It works on mine. I looked thru the manual for anything on this, and it should be working the way you're doing it. If that is the only thing not working on it, I'd be hesitant to return it. But at the same time, if I got something, anything!, brand new, it better work perfectly. It's up to you.

yes, i will wait. to tell you the truth, i dont even use it, but it would be nice to know i could. it will be a royal pain, for sprint to get all of my stuff over to the new phone. :indiff:
is the flash light supposed to be the front lcd or the flash for the camera?? when i close the phone, and hold the volume down button, the front lcd stays on. i was under the impression that the flash for the camera was supposed to come on and be the flashlight.

flash of the camera on the back of the phone. I just push any side button to turn on the sub display then hold either volume button. Light comes on. You probably don't want to do this and who knows if it will work but I thought maybe reseting the phone. Not sure if it will fix your problem but I think you will lose everything if you do that.

definately dont want to reset the phone, and it still doesnt work. i will wait, and exchange the phone in the sprint store once they are available. has anyone been able to get bitpim to work for this phone yet?? backed up the pics, but want to back up the phone book as well before i take her in.
ok, i think i figured out why my flashlight is not working. i started to take some pictures today, and the flash is not working. i really love the camera on this phone, so it will definately will be going in once they are in stores.

I tried everything to get that flashlight thing to work and it never did for me either.
I finally got rid of my M1 today, not just because of the flashlight issue. Most everybody complained they could not hear me on the mouthpiece. I noticed other people commented on that in other threads, plus I never used the MP3 player or the Camera, so I ended up getting a KatanaII. So far, I'm happier with that phone even though it's no longer a *high end* phone. Guess my phone dork days are fading.
