Ok.. this is an amature FYI help posting..
I just replaced my good ole 8100 with the 8400. Was disappointed that no USB drivers came with it. Was happy a USB cable came with it.
Now for those of us who are non-techie junkies, heres what I found out and what I did.
I use XP. for my computer. I plugged the SD card into the phone, then went to tools, micro SD, then microsd settings, and then 2, format, then 3, create folders.
Now its ready to use.
I was unable to figure out how to dump my 8100 phonebook to my computer using bitpm, but I did manage to get a good printout of all the contact stuff. so I manually input all the information last night while in a chat room on paltalk.
Next was the ringers. Both midi and mp3. First the Mp3. I took an mp3 file and edited it with goldwave editor to 30 seconds long, 14,000 kps sample rate. worked fine in goldwave editor.
Then I took both files and went to the old 3gupload site which is now www.mixxer.com and got an account (free) and uploaded my ringers to it. THen using their stuff, I sent the ringers to my phone. WALA! Got my speical personalized ringers.
Now since you get the first internet month free, (be sure to turn it off at the end of your billing period if you don't want to keep it), you can take advantage of it to set up your phone using a website like mixxer.com to get your ringtones and pictures sent to the phone.
I did the same thing with the speical pictures I used to identify incomming callers. I have a vietnam vet friend, whos picture appears and a marching tune plays when he calls. Once I got the photos sent to mixxer site, I sent them to my phone and again, everything is back to normal..
Total time for uploading to website and back to phone - about 15 mins for 9 photo's and 6 speical ringtones, 15 mins only because I had to locate 3 of the ringers orginal files.
The mp3 ringer was a test. Mixxer modified it somehow and I think some of the quality was removed. the Ringer itself has more "hiss" in it and is not as clear or loud as the original one I uploaded.
From the mixer site, when the incomming text came in, I selected "go to URL" option, and it gave me a warning saying it wasn't sprint approved" and I hit continue.
The site is set up to automaticaly start the download. The phone gave me another warning and I selected GO (accepted the download). That simple. It saved them to memory. (Not the SD Card)
Not sure how to get the ringers and speical pictures to the SD card yet.
Now for the SD Card. I have an extended USB connector on one of the ports of my 'puter. this is because I have a lot of small items that need a USB connection, but that I don't want to leave hooked up to the computer full time. Items like, camera, Digital voice recorder, Digital camcorder, cell phones, and memory card reader.
Once I had the USB cable plugged into the extention, I plugged in the phone, and opened it. I selected item 2, Mass storage.WIndows detected a new device, which was listed as a "removable drive" under my computer, showing the drive as
"sanyo SD" as drive J on my computer. (drive id will vary depending on how much you have hooked up to your computer, such as floppy drives, DVD and CD stuff, how many HD's you have and if they are partioned to various sized logical drives).
From there, I was able to use "my computer" to access the SD card and transfer a bunch of MP3 files to the media folder.
I was also able to send a bunch of pictures to the J:\dcim\100sanyo folder.
Then I went to the lower right of my taskbar where the green arrow lookign thing was, and selected "Saftly remove hardware".. you must use this option before disconnecting the cable, or you risk erasing the SD card.
When I did that, another window came up showing a USB mass storage device I selected that and a screen came up on the phone telling me it was ok to remove the cable.
WALA! MP3 music on my cell phone!
Other than that, its pretty much set up just like my old 8100. Now if only I could figure out how to make good screen savers, and such.
Hope this text can help someone.
