so I've had my M1 for a little less than 24 hours, thought I would drop a line about how it was going
Size
Open: nice finish throughout, continous design between the interior and exterior (the razr is a good example of NOT being continous). the black and silver blend together nicely, for a modern look. it doesnt' seem "crammed in", as the layout is understandable and clear.
Closed: closed the phone looks a little A840ish to me, but a true phone person will know the differences (besides that massive screen and outer controls)
Display
Internal: the internal screen is just as perfect as the 9000. clear and QVGA
External: the external screen is the size of most phones internal screens (kidding). this baby is huge. you can easily read whats on the screen. the Sprint logo that comes on a la Katana is pretty nifty too.
LED: i'm a little sad the LED isn't rainbow (9000, 5550, etc), but its bright and gets your attention when it needs it.
Clarity/Volume
Speakerphone: its a sanyo speakerphone. well, its two of them. and they're clear, and awesome. not the best for talking on, but great for ringtones, voice playback, waiting on hold, etc. oh yeah, did i mention this thing is LOUD?
Phone: internally, sounds just like the 9000. clear and understandable - LOUD
Mic: people say they can hear me clearly, i've listened to it on my friends VX8600 and it sounds good.
System
Text messaging:- same as the t9, the auto-complete sentance thing irks me. t9 learns, t9 also auto-adds phonebook entries, emails, etc.
Picture Mail/Video Mail: - i love it on this. first thing you see is the picture, full screen. or the video.
Menus: menus move quick, even with animation and such. menus are understandable (you know where to find what you need)
Feel
Keypad: a little 8300 like but i like the feel. a little clicky. The down button on the keypad is a little hard to get at for folks with bigger hands. i manage fine, but once in a while i find myself pecking at the "speaker" button. I don't know if this is because i'm used to my 9000 or otherwise.
External Buttons: easy to hit, and i have big fingers.
Side Keys: - a the volume rocker is a little hard to hit when on a call or the phone is laid down. perhaps i'm used to the 9k
Weight:doesn't feel as heavy as you think it would.
The Extras
1GB: love 1gb of storage, still getting stuff converted to he-AAC
Bluetooth not a bluetooth man. will try with my mothers HS850
Camera love it! 2.0 megapixels of sanyo power!
reemusk's thoughts on...
m1 vs...
9000: close, but the 9000 still beats it overall barely. give the 9k 2mp and it'll never need replacement
A920: both good music phones, M1 is easier to use (menus, etc)
Blade/M - Are you kidding me?
8400: the 8400 is a king of its own class. against the M1 it gets OUTclassed
pics,examples to come later. questions?

i liked the 7200 because its got that old school rubber buttons ... a good hard push and you get a nice feeling. the M1 gives you feedbac that but in a more modern, plastic feeling.

I gotta admit- This phone is kinda ugly. I wasnt expecting a beautiful phone, especially coming from a KRZR, but this thing isnt going to be turning too many heads. That said, its ugly in a somewhat cool way. I generally concur with Ree on the review and I would probably totally agree but it just came out of the box basically. It definitely is lighter than one would expect.
Its amazing how many features they can pack into a 1984(looking) mobile phone these days.

Had mine about 4 hours now. I like it, just dont know if I $383 like it. Flip is a lil wobbly when closed (side to side) buttons feel kinda cheap when pressed, plasticy. Love the big outer screen. Call quality is good, I still think my krzr was a little bassier/clearer. Gets great reception though. Was already debating the m610 vs m1 before i ordered the m1 now im still debating...

Nice review. Can't wait until mine arrives to see for myself! I would assume that the M1 has the nice clicky feeling upon closing the flip as all Sanyos? That's what I miss about my 5500. Strange, but it just felt "right".

Good review Reemusk. I must say I agree with you on a lot of things. The phone does look a little A840ish, infact when I showed it to my co-workers that was almost the same response I got from everyone. A lot of them thought it was ugly but they liked the feel of it, the camera, the speaker, the huge outerscreen and the outside playback keys. Most of my co-workers are FUSIC fans. 6 of my coworkers got the FUSIC I am the only one with the M1 although one of my coworkers was looking to ugprade and I showed him the M1 fact sheet and he liked it so he ordered it and when he saw mine he didnt like the look of it (thought it was too squareish) however he did like everything else so he said he is gonna keep it. I love the phone although I agree that the keypad is a little hard for people with big hands, I dont have very large hands and still have some getting used to also the T9 is ok I wish it was a little better, i hate when it add words that it predicts I am going to say next, maybe it will get better at predicting. I tested out the Bluetooth and totally loved it. I mean my Treo just seemed like it was horrible with BT, it was staticky and I couldn't get too far without loosing quality. The M1 has superior BT. My headset sounds super clear on it and people say I sound normal on it. Also the Stereo BT is awesome! I was finally able to use my Logitech stereo BT headsets (which I tried with a FUSIC but they didn't work) and I was BLOW AWAY! The sound quality is excellent and I was able to leave my phone in that back room and walk around the front of the store and still hear everything very clearly. It was a little bit of a PIA to get the BT stereo to work at first, but once its going its good and it even works with JAVA Apps like Sprint Power View.
One thing I wanted to add. One of the coolest things on the phone has got to be the ability to minimize the media player and send text messages. This should be on all phones. Also the speaker is absolutely phenomenal. I was able to make my own ringtones and shrink the size to about .25 of its size and the quality was the same and it sounded awesome on the speaker.

Nice review. I actually like the 9000 directional pad better then the M1. At times I do press the wrong buttons with the M1 but maybe with time that won't be a issue. When I saw pictures of the M1 I didn't really like the design but I said that might change when it's in my hands which it has. I definitely like the looks/design/build a lot better then the Fusic that's for sure.

I posted this over at Howard, figured I would drop my 2 cents here for anyone that want to compare it to the A900 and MM9000. Forgive me if most of this has been covered.
Quick observation of the M1: The RF is relatively the same, if not a tiny bit better than the A900 and the MM9000. The inside LCD is noticably smaller than the A900 and the MM9000, but it does look sharper than the two, probably due to the smaller size. The preset animated screen saver is pretty cool. The outer LCD is definately the nicest if ever seen. It is hands down a smaller phone, as the keypad is jammed into a tighter space, something to get used to, as well as the smaller inside lcd. The keys feel nice, as they pop out from the surface. The speakers sound great, loud like a Nextel Moto, and good sound. The voice recognition is very, very good! I had to change a couple of settings to make the voice command talk to you, and make the key echo say the digits when dialing. If you tap the outside speaker button, it enters voice commands, if you hold it, it triggers voice tags, with the flip open or closed. Has a nice build to it, plastic, but nice. The hinge is solid, and clicks into place when you open it. Feels slighly brick-ish in your pocket, like a MM9000 without an antenna, but it is much lighter. Havent taken many pictures yet, but they look great, plenty of zoom, and a very bright flash, although I wish they put the lense on the flip. Flash works as a flashlight also (volume up key with flip closed, readylink key turns it off.) I noticed that the inside LCD always illuminates with the outer one like the A900 (the MM9000 does not do this.) Also the outer LCD goes completely blank when it shuts off (the MM9000 always shows the time, battery, and signal after the backlight turns off.) Lastly, I found it strange that the included charger uses a single pin connector, like a universal style. All in all, IMO for what it is worth, it is an awsome phone, packed with features . I plan to activate it and use it for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised if I go back to the 900M for the thinner profile that I am now used to, and larger screen/keypad.

I believe it is FULL duplex. Not sure if my test concept is accurate, but I think it should be. I called into my voice mailbox at work on speakerphone and spoke continuously while a message was playing and heard every word of it loud and clear. It's sad, but I had no one available to call in person at the moment.

Just got the M1, fresh out the packaging and i already dislike it a little. Im sure it has a lot of goodies but already im noticing this phone is toooooo light. Light is good as opposed to heavy and chunky, but this phone is like hollow light. I feel that it is too light to be this thick. It wasn't easy giving up 700wx for a M1 but I just can't stand the size of the Treo's. I finally relized that I like to be able to throw a compact phone in my pocket and not have to worry about it. As for sound quality people have already told me that I sound a lot better on my M1 compared to the 700wx. Not sure why palm has issues with the sound quality not to mention the bluetooth issues. I might check out the Motorola Q when it comes out but even though it's thin it's still wide. Hopefully Sprint gets a nice flip pda someday. :fingers:

That's the main problem i'm having with my 700p. It's big to be carrying around all the time. Only thing holding me back is the screen on the 700p and i have apps i need for school on there. Can't do that on the M1. Would have to buy a pda and that's more money i don't have to spend. Guess the M1 is going back. Greath phone though. Just waiting for the 6800 whenever that's coming out.

Isn't the M1 wide?Have you seen the M1/Fusic comparsion pictures? I don't think the M1 is that much bigger then the Fusic. The M1 might be a tad chubby to some people but I would rather have a slightly bigger phone with a better battery then a thin phone with a crappy battery. Also the internal antenna makes the M1 more compact and allows it fit better my pocket which the phone is pretty light so I don't really notice it. The Treo is a bit on the heavy side and I just never liked putting my it in my pocket since it's big (lenght and width) and I don't like side cases.
The A900 is my friends phone. I would never own a phone that beat up. lol

The M1 sounds awesome but it could never replace my 700p. I'd just end up goin back to my treo. . I kinda wish I never stumbled upon the treo because everytime I try out another cell phone it never compares to what I want which is in a 700p. Oh well! Enjoy your M1s! :)
You can say that again!

I do miss the Treo wx at times but don't miss lugging it around. I'll probably try the Motorola Q but happy with the M1. Would like a flip pda.

One more thing the M1's sound quality and bluetooth seem better then the Treo wx. Don't understand why the Treo's can't get that right.

"weight" certainly isn't a flaw...i love how it its "brick brick brick" then "jesus this thing is too light and cheap, and kinda small"And if the phone had been heavier than I'm sure it is, people would be complaining that it IS a brick and too heavy. You just can't make people happy no matter how hard you try.

you mean you have a ful song that you want as a ringer? or you have a ringtone that's a song? if you have a full song, you need to either trim it and send it through funformobile or just put it in the phone's internal memory and listen to it. as far as loudness and quality, people say the m1 is as loud or louder than the 9000, which is what i have, and the 9000 is LOUD and CLEAR.

honestly brother the Speaker on the MM9000 is clear but extremly loud songs sound distorted ...I have made file songs of all sound qualities and types and I had my MM9000 up until my M1 came in the mail Dec 4th 2006 and the M1 has TRUE stereo speakers which adjusts the sound to be clear 95% of the time! its not as loud as the 9000 but in return sanyo made the quility richer! so its really what you like more .. quality or Loudness LOL

Good post reemusk, What i find amazing is the audio quality with the headset, at level 16 theres is no static and just as loud as the 9000 (using the headset) the 9000 had static at level 16 with headphones on, And ive noticed, MANY if not all the people who have claimed this phone is a "Brick Phone" had compare it to a razr/krzr..... with all do respect, wouldnt that classify at least 80% of highend phones as brick phones?? i was actually surprised on how small the m1 is. I have big hands and the m1 is the same size as an i870 also a tad bigger than the 8300. Sanyo has released the Katana for those who were waiting for a thin sanyo fone, but sanyo has released the m1 for those who want good features, no bugs (that i have experienced), and something that is decent looking. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and i find the m1 sorta attractive

i think it looks really sleek and prefessional. people said the 9000 was ugly, but it's simple, and i like it.

My M1 is pretty nice but its seems the internal antenna gives bad signal strenghth sometimes in certain areas and the power vision slips to regular vision. Other than that its a great phone.

can you still watch full length movies on the m1 like other phones with memory cards? and is the speaker louder than the 9000? (ringtone wise)

you can, and the speaker might not be as loud, but its a lil more clearer

Does anyone know where you can get Cases holsters and what not for the M1. I got a case from ebay but the camera part of the phone just slips out and I would like to know where to get some good stuff for this phone

I was wondering how to go about copying files via USB to the phone. I've gotten the SANYO image to mount but whenever I try to copy a file over, it informs me that I can't move (read copy) anything to the phone as the SANYO image can't be modified.
Am I doing something wrong?
For whatever its worth, I'm on a Mac <--Don't think that has anything to do with it but I figued I'd throw it out there.

Everything is working now. Tried my other BT computer in the house and the M1 connected fine.
Looks like I'm selling my 8400 :)

I am coming from the Motorola Q and just got the M1. My thoughts were that it looks like something from 1980 but the features are excellent. The speakers rock, but I am one of the ones who likes their phone to have the features but also look good as well. I think I may go with the Motorola KZR because of the looks of the phone. Am I making a huge mistake?

I'm not a huge fan of Motorola products. Ever phone, at least the RAZR, KAZR and Q, seem to have issues with a slow interface that bogs the phone down. Reception-wise the phone is fine, but the best Sprint phones are easily Sanyo's.

Ok I had the KRZR for about 4 days and went back to the M1. The Motorola UI is horrible and at times the menus are sluggish at best. I think I'll stay with the phone that looks like it's from 1980 but the menus fly through.

Thanks for the review. I hope to have my M1 in my hands on Monday once UPS comes calling. I look forward to the new phone and all the gadgets.

btw. the phone is NOT bluetooth 2.0 +EDR. I have the impression from other websites and reviews that it had bluetooth 2.0 but it only has 1.1. So no high speed data transfers via bluetooth on this thing. it only goes about 70 kb/s.

I got a brand new, right out the box M1 as an in-store replacement for my year and a half old 9K was power cycling every time I used the media player and browse. The M1 the same thing, it was replaced too and again never thought Sanyo's would be buggy

You know, I still keep my 9000 around. The M1 has power cycled on me a few times as well already. The 9000 is still the best phone ever. Now that I've had the M1 for about 3 months I'm already noticing things like "Phone Creak" and the plastic feels so much cheaper than the 9000. Honestly, tho the M1 is still a solid and mostly stable phone, with a quick UI.. it doesn't "hold" me to sanyo like my other phones have. I've caught myself eyeballing other phones like the upstage. I've even kept my 9000 and pondered heavily about switching back to it. The only real feature that I've gotten used to is the intenna.
I think I am starting to lean towards a little bit slimmer phone now, so Katana DLX might be my next phone. Though if sanyo is reading this, Bring me a 9000 at about half the thickness, and I will buy every one of them to roll around in naked!

I just got an M1 a few days ago after a VERY disappointing experience with the Fusic, and an equally disappointing experience before that with an UpStage. The first phone I had on this account? Sanyo Katana.
I love the features on this phone and I find it very attractive (especially the blue glitter). I keep my phone in my bra and it's light enough that I don't mind it being there yet big enough that I won't forget it and it won't fall out like the Fusic did constantly. The large clear screens are fantastic. The one thing I missed the most on the Fusic and UpStage was the bright clear beautiful screen of the Katana. I love the external controls and stereo speakers. This is THE loudest phone I have ever heard. At first I thought that the thickness would bother me since I was used to much thinner phones but I like it. It feels solid and sturdy in my hand and the hinge (while looking strange) is actually very comfortable. I very much enjoy texting on the M1 over the Fusic. The buttons on the M1 are easier to press, easier to feel, and mine make an audible click so you know you've actually pressed it. I have not had much time to play with the camera yet, but I have been very pleased with the pictures that I have taken.
It may not be the right phone for some people, but I really think it's the right one for me. Functionality, good looks (imo) and sturdy construction.
And it was free, so you can't beat that.
