I just picked up a 8400 last night, love the phone. But I can not figure out how to get a basic idle display on the sub lcd. My 4500 would show the screensaver with all the info while charging or active. But then switch to a idle display with no background, just the time, battery bar, and signal bar. Is this not a option with the 8400? I saw that I could have it never go into sleep mode... But with color I would imagine it would kill the battery.

I had the 8100 and that has the idle sub also..love that just to grab phone and see time. but I also can't figure out if there is a idle for the sub screen on the 8400.
And whats up with both the screens staying on during charge and media play back while closed

Yup, my cell phone is my watch. And thats one feature I expect out of phones these days, thought it was pretty much standard.

Go into your settings > Display and scroll until you find Screesaver. I think this is what your looking for. It isn't exactly an "idle screen" as in some other models. In other words it won't show the background for 15 or 30 seconds then switch to the screensaver. The 8400 doesn't have that feature that I know of. (for the main OR the sub) The only thing remotely available close to that are the animations (aquarium, dinosaur, and penguin) and those aren't viewable on the sub lcd.

If you do select a screensaver for the sub lcd, then extra info like calendar appointments/alarms etc will not show on the bottom of the lcd. I like this feature so have no screen saver selected for sub lcd, I just keep changing the background colors.

(Though I must admit, I really like the eyeball wallpaper I got out of the galleries here. Makes a wicked cool screensaver for the sub lcd.)

whoops I think I misuderstood your question.

I think what you're talking about is sometimes referred to as "sleep mode" where the graphics are gone and there's just the digital display of the time and such. My 8200 did that I think. Nope 8400 won't do that; sub lcd just shuts off and displays nothing.

Thanks, I did find that option last night. But it gave me a warning of it affecting the battery life. I guess I will just turn off the sleep mode for the lcd and see how the battery life is.

Opps missed your whoops reply :P

Yeah thats the mode I am talking about, seems like all phones have this mode. But it is missing on the 8400? I guess I could always hope for it to be added with a firmware update at some point.

so you have to open the 8400 to see the time if its been idling?

No, you can just press any of the side keys and the time will display again.
