View Full Version : Making ringtones without getting in trouble?

I figured out how to make nice quality ringtones thanks to the hard work and advice of others in the forums. I have also thought of putting a site togther so that i can give other people access to what i have been able to make (although my old computer finally died and i have to re-create everything again :irked: ).

My question is this: How do you take the ringtones made from songs, TV and movies and put them on a website without getting in trouble for copyright infringement? I don't want to sell them, just be able to share what i have made (and will ultimately re-make). I had to ask because the record companies seem eager to sue anyone these days and i don't want to get into that kind of trouble.

I figured that if it was free it would be ok, but i just wanted to make sure. I have read where some of you either have sites now, or have made them in the past. I would love to make a ringtone site where i could make some money with it, but that seems to be a big challenge. I think that i would have to get permission to use the sings for ringers, pay royalties and follow a lot of extra rules that would make it too much of a hassle.

I would appreciate any info that anyone could give me. I have thought about this for a while, but haven't acted on it yet for a lack of resources. But that may not be a problem anymore, giving me the chance to actually try this CRAZY idea of mine.

Thanks

Well, if it's free it's still not okay. Basically what you're doing would be illegal, but since you're not making money off of it, it's not as big of a deal. I find WAP-only pages to be "safest."

That's what i was thinking too. A regular HTML page might get TOO much attention.
