So, I finally decided to just host a website of my own with ringers, games, videos, and anything else you could possibly imagine.
I've been on many WAP website.... some great, some awful. Since I'm designing my own WAP website, I was just wondering what every body looks for when they browse to one of those website. When you click on a link for the first time, and spend the first 3 minutes on that website.... what shapes your reaction? Organization, Content, Navigation, Easy to use, Colors, Graphics?
I was just wondering because personally, here are some of the things I like and dislike...
I like websites that get right to the point. You click on the link and BAM, the content is right there.... no ads, no prior registration (to something you don't even KNOW yet), no long loading times.
Something I don't, are some of the organizational strategies... I like it all to be on one page and not having to hit NEXT, NEXT, NEXT... but then again, if you have too many on one page, it may take longer to load.... but we are also talking HIGH SPEED now.... so is it better to wait a little longer and have all the ringers there, or is it better to just have about 10 per page?
On that note, is it better to list songs alphabetically, or recent ones first, or having to click on an artist and then see their content?
Before you download an application, what do you want to know prior? Size? Detailed Desciption? Maker? Type of Game? Imagine you are browsing a list... do you just want to click on a titel to get more info.... and then another click to download.... or should the info be right there..... OR combines, one link for direct download, one link for more info....
What kinda ringtones do you prefer.... MIDI or VOICE?
Are user ratings for each ringtone.... or more for games actually beneficial to you?
Sprintusers is BY the users FOR the users.... I don't see why I can't make a website with the same motivation.
Seriously, any suggestions, thoughts, feedback, would be much appreciated!

In the very far future, I'm kinda thinking that the website will DETECT what phone/browser/media you are using, and then you can just go ahead and download, because the website will only show you what is known to be compatible with your medium. This is in the FAR FAR future.... I'm still working on getting m4a, qcp, etc ringtones to work.... it looks like I'm missing something........
So Far Its Lookin Good. Just Need Some Next Page Links. But Thanx For The Site.

I like websites that get right to the point. You click on the link and BAM, the content is right there.... no ads, no prior registration (to something you don't even KNOW yet), no long loading times. For a WAP site, I agree. There should be little-to-no graphics. Keep it simple.
For me personally, I like being able to use Sprint's accesslinks (read: their Vision homepage, Content pages, etc) where you hit the appropriate number and it takes you to the corresponding link. For example, on the Vision homepage, hitting 2 on your keypad takes you to Downloads. When it comes to the actual content, there should be some organization so you don't dump every ringtone on the same page. I organize by artist, you could organize by genre or something like that. It's all personal preference, I think, when it comes to exactly how you divide your content. You also want to keep in mind that there are A LOT of people who still don't have EVDO, so that isn't really an important factor yet.
On that note, is it better to list songs alphabetically, or recent ones first, or having to click on an artist and then see their content? For me, alphabetically. Don had a search feature on his site, and Louie has one on his site as well, that work very well. I didn't go through all this trouble, so I just have a "recently added" section for each genre. Again, I think this is personal preference.
For games, I personally just want to know the name. If your site wasn't WAP, then I would think listing more attributes would be worth the trouble. But in WAP-based pages, I think you're making things more complicated than they need to be (also note from smurf's comment, there HAS to be a JAD & JAR for each game/app, not one or the other). Now, if you're going to provide content that was not released by Sprint, then I think you owe visitors more information as risk becomes involved downloading stuff like that.
What kinda ringtones do you prefer.... MIDI or VOICE? Neither... as stated, M4A for sure, then if you feel like it, MP3 and QCP. M4A is what the vast majority of Sprint phones use now. Some can use MP3. A very few are still stuck on crappy QCP's. IMO, there isn't a big enough audience for QCP ringtones to make them worth providing.
Are user ratings for each ringtone.... or more for games actually beneficial to you? To me, no.
What you have now is looking good. Once you have more content, I suggest creating two categories for screen savers: 240x320 and 176x220. These are the 2 most standard screen sizes and, like QCP, any other size is too obsolete to bother with IMO.
With regards to a games section, that's something I would suggest keeping under wraps if you end up going that way and providing a lot of content. You're putting this site out there for the world to see, and if you make games and apps as easy to download as ringtones and wallpapers, you're going to get yourself in trouble... and possibly end up (no offense) ruining what most of us love the most about Sprint. This is why there aren't ANY sites for games and apps this easy to get to. I know it sounds bad, but games and apps should be password-protected, requiring people to set up an account with you. It's not only for your own good, but it's for everyone's good so that we can keep ripping games like this.
Again, the site's looking good. If you need content, just post in here that you do and plenty of people will donate.

Great! I appreciate all your feedback. It wouldn't be so hard either to setup an account to register to download games and apps. That way you have some sort of control of who is downloading....! And the graphics, I probably could add that size.... I can now SEE WHY it would be hard to maintain.... it's not something that happens overnight.... it takes lots of figuring out etc...... and you spend all the time providing, so that with one click people can download QUALITY content. I think of it this way.... I'm making this website for ME.... and I will put as much content on there like I feel like I can..... I'm just sharing with everyone else. That way there will hopefully be no pressure...... and it's also a good use of my spare time.
Thanks for all your help and time laursifer!

NOW, that I finally figured out my mistake (MIME.... didn't add ALL of it!), I put some sample ringtones on there..... those 5-6 tones, are my first tones, so please feel free to criticize..... am I cutting the wrong places? Does it matter? Are they not loud enough? Is the quality auwful?
Cause see, there is really no point in saving them in the exact format if no one is going to download them :P

PS: Just a reminder, they are on http://wap.ryansechrest.com

The MIDI files are way smaller, because it's just some notes, and so you can fit them all on there in a respectable size.
With the m4a's, there are two things to consider when talking about file size: song length and quality. Now, I guess it takes about ~20 seconds for a person to answer their phone or before the mailbox kicks in..... so all songs are going to be about that long, except for MIDI files I supposed :). Laursifer's songs are about 20 seconds. The other issue is file quality. Now, I looked at some websites that say "here is the standard," but when I tried it the quality was awful, whereas laursifer's songs sound great.... very clear and very loud. So I have not figured out how low I can go that it still sounds good. But yes, you are right PaPPaSmuRf777, the size is definitely something I noticed and will try to keep much lower.... hopefully somewhere around 300-400kb.

OK, I put another ringtone up there.... and as you can see it's 1/3 of the size of other songs.... it's also 30 seconds long..... just because you need to listen to the entire "section" of the song.... it's the highlight, you can't just cut that short ;)
If this is the quality that's OK, this will be my converting default.
So please download the song "Damien Rice - The Blowers Daughter" and see if you can handle the quality.
Thanks for all your help by the way!!

Here is what I would do. I have added my comments in bold below.
So, I finally decided to just host a website of my own with ringers, games, videos, and anything else you could possibly imagine.
I've been on many WAP website.... some great, some awful. Since I'm designing my own WAP website, I was just wondering what every body looks for when they browse to one of those website. Well, I prefer everything on one page but if that is not feasible then I like the option of skipping to the page I want.
On that note, is it better to list songs alphabetically, or recent ones first, or having to click on an artist and then see their content? I think all of the above. There are times when you don't know what you want so seeing the most recent might help. As does listing them alphabetically and by artist for those who know exactly what they are looking for.
Your last suggestion is best. A combination of all that. You can get both the information and/or just go and start to download.
What kinda ringtones do you prefer.... MIDI or VOICE? VOICE! Hands down.
Are user ratings for each ringtone.... or more for games actually beneficial to you?
Not beneficial to me at all. Afterall we are talking about ringtones and songs those are always personal choices.
Sprintusers is BY the users FOR the users.... I don't see why I can't make a website with the same motivation. I hear ya and I agree.
Seriously, any suggestions, thoughts, feedback, would be much appreciated!

Reading is fundamental. My responses to your questions were more for a regular website and not a WAP site but some of course not all of them are still good suggestions. Thanks for making the effort though. I personally just upgraded on Saturday to the PPC-6700 so I don't know if your site will be of much help to me unless I am mistaken.

Good suggestions!
I just used a demo PPC 6700 and the website looks fine on there, just the picture sizes and ringtones are not really compatible. Sorry!
When I designed the website, I had two choices:
+ Target a select audience, provide more quality and quantity content
+ Target EVERYONE with different phones, creating content would then take MUCH longer, and the quality might be questionable after a while, because you are trying to get it done faster.
I basically try to target the phone I own, hoping that other people will have my phone or a smilar compatible one. It's too hard and time consuming (of which I don't have much currently) for one person to target every cell, so it would be much nicer if people focused on one area and became an expert in that field, that way we would still have everything, but the responsibility would be split!

I'm a ringtone maker addict at this point..... I don't know why. The idea of being able to create something that some other person out there uses..... it's a cool thought! So, Im on a ringtone/background spree..... of course I will get tired soon and make maybe one tone a day, but there is no sign of that tiredness yet
SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more. The most popular section is the message board where visitors can read and write messages, ask questions, and get advice about their cellular phone from other users.
