I have an LG PM 225. The cold weather is here in Chicago and I'm having a problem with the display getting sluggish and the colors washing out due to the cold. I moved the phone from my pants pocket to the pocket inside my jacket but I'm still having the problem. Is there another phone that might handle the cold better?

No this is a possibility. I know when I go into my car when it's parked outside, the screen on my satellite radio and on my Pioneer AVIC-D2 in dash navi are kinda slugish until it warms up. It's a possibility that you're going through it as well. I live in a dessert so it doesnt get THAT cold here but still it gets cold enough to do that. It's been about 30-40 degree's for the low's and around 50-60 for the high's right now.. next week the low's are going down to around 20 degree's...

I've had that happen to my vga1000, my ipod, my Palm, my camera, my travel clock...
There's a battery in these devices. If it gets too cold, the battery will not work as well. Hence, the sluggish display, etc. That's my theory, anyway.
Keep it in an inside pocket, or in a bag that's well insulated. Or, keep using the device. Using the device (battery) will generate heat, as well.
NB: It should be warmer in Chicago next week :p

I seriously dont think it's the battery.. All of my devices that this happens to are hard wired into the car.. and run off the alternator that generates the majority of the power in the car so there's no affect of the "cold battery" on start up. It's a liquid crystal display.. the crystals work by being warmed up and cooled down to give you a picture... if they're cold, they wont work at their full potential like they would if they were warm.
What else explains his phone doing this? I mean come on, if it works fine in the summer, spring, and fall... all warmer temperatures than winter, then all the sudden it starts getting colder and the phone is having these symptoms...

So, do liquid crystals act like solids or liquids or something else? It turns out that liquid crystals are closer to a liquid state than a solid. It takes a fair amount of heat to change a suitable substance from a solid into a liquid crystal, and it only takes a little more heat to turn that same liquid crystal into a real liquid. This explains why liquid crystals are very sensitive to temperature and why they are used to make thermometers and mood rings. It also explains why a laptop computer display may act funny in cold weather or during a hot day at the beach!

the only way for a phone to be effected is if it sits out in the cold. your phone shouldnt have a problem in your pocket or in your jacket.

its possible its the weather, but the 225 is notorious for having LCD issues. The screen blanks out all the time.
As far as I know, any LCD is susceptable to cold weather as sA900msung pointed out. Don't know if another phone would be better...
But I would reccomend getting rid of the 225, that phone is garbaje.

Likewise, if you expose LCDs to high enough temps, they will temporarily go black.

The ambient outside temp is enough to chill down my phone even though it's in my pants pocket. As others have said the crystals get sluggish. It's been happening with almost every outdoor device that uses an LCD. I had a fun time with a gas pump yesterday. I'm just looking for a solution other than burying my phone in an inside pocket.

Well keep a blow dryer with you in the car so when you're pumping gas, you aim it at the $$$ screen and heat up the LCD :D
Your phone you could always put.... naa jk jk. Well I mean the only thing you can do is try to keep the display(s) warm and away from the outside cold as much as possible. Because i'm sure a long term exposer of this could possibly ruin it over a long run...

Good luck. As has been said, what you are experiencing is simply a limit of LCD technology. It won't really harm the phone (unless it completely freezes and then condensates). In order to find a phone that works flawlessly in very cold waether, get a phone that doesn't have an LED display. Optionally, I believe OLED displays work well down to well below 0C (don't quote me on that), so a phone sporting OLED goodness might be another option.

Are there any Sprint phones that have an OLED display, other than the external screen of the a640?

Good question. I think most just have the external OLED. I know companies like Samsung have manufactured OLED internal displays, but few have been implemented into phones.
