Hands down the best converter is Super (http://www.erightsoft.net/Superdc.html) . It is free and it can convert almost anything into almost anything else. To convert to 3gp for your phone pick "3gp (Sony Ericsson) from the drop-down list 1. Then in drop-down 2 pick "MPEG-4" and in drop-down 3 pick "AAC". Make sure the Video settings are 176x144, and 15 frames a sec. For the best quality i also pick 192 as the Bit-rate.
Its pretty fast and can be used to do a batch of conversions.
You can also convert DVD VOB files with it. So you can use DVD Shrink to extract a VOB of a dvd and then use Super to convert it to 3gp. Anyone who's donwnload any of my halloween movies can attest to the quality.
The only down-side to Super is it cannot "hint" the 3gp for streaming. you must do that in a seperate step with Quicktime Pro or something. But if you want to just put the 3gp on your mini-sd or whatever its perfect.

Orb should stream your files even if they are not in 3g2/3gp. Maybe check your settings

hinting is the process of internally marking the file in blocked segements for streaming; so that the server knows where to "chop" it into packet; more or less. Darwin Streaming Server (and all streaming server software as far as i know) must have the file hinted in order to stream it. in quick time you have the option when you export; one of the drop-down settings is "streaming" and you can just check the box to enable it and use the defaults.
if you don't plan on streaming the media you don't need to worry about "hinting"; it'll play from a mini-sd just the same either way.
ps: it might make it easier on orb to play pre-formated 3gp files (so it doens't have to resize and convert on the fly). but it shouldn't have to be hinted; orb should have no trouble with non-hinted 3gp

How big should you expect the resulting .3gp file to be when using Super with the settings suggested above?
I'm encoding a DVD .vob file now (after extracting from DVD Shrink) and the file size is just under 200Mb.
I've seen many .3gp DVD conversions that are very watchable with no audio slippage, but with a file size of less than 80Mb.

The bitrates can be lowered to make your files smaller. I have my video set at 96 and audio at 32. It just depends on what kind of quality you are going for.

I am downloading it now, but will this let me change the size of the video?
I have a bunch of movies that will play fine on my wifes A920, but on my Treo 700p, they are quite small.
Anyway to enlarge them?

For DVDs, DVD Decrypter and Super work best. You have to first use DVD Decrypter to write the files (VOB) to your hard drive, then use Super to convert to 3G2. Very easy to do and a DVD movie shrinks down to approx 100Mb total.

So if you use hinted videos, will there be more loading? I don't completely understand the advantages/disadvantages of hinting a 3gp.

are you talking about when using orb? i don't know for sure because i've never tried; but i would think a hinted file would show less "loading" messages, because the file is already hinted and Orb doesn't have to do as much work to hint it on the fly.
there's no real advantage to hinting the file unless you plan to stream it from your own streaming server, then you MUST hint it for the streaming server to be able to transfer it. Orb will work either way, if its hinted or not because it will convert the file to a hinted file on the fly (like it does when it converts other movie file types). if you plan on watching it from your min-SD card or something then there is no advantage.

These steps worked great for me, so for that I thank you. The only thing, for those following the same steps, to keep in mind is that the newest versions of TCPMP do not have the AAC codec, thus you will have no sound without some work on your part. There is still a plugin you can find for AAC, but you'll need to do a bit of searching to find it. I'm not sure whether we should link that sort of thing, so rather then risk breaking rules, I'll just say that you can find it with a bit of googling. Once you have the plugin, all the steps work flawlessly.
I Still Dont Understand Why Ya Need To Stream A Video To Save It To A Memory Card On Your Phone. ???
The steps weren't to stream a video, they were to convert a video to a format intended for your phone, at which time you can save it to your memory card. People are posing questions from different standpoints, including orb, but neither require a special format to stream, if that is what you are looking to do. All I was after was a way to convert a video to a format for my phone, which I saved to my card for playing via TCPMP.
I Got Super Downloaded. But It Would Be Nice If It Came With A "How To" For It.
I assumed you already knew how to use it. I kind of learned the basics from the tutorial here at SU.

people, please READ the whole thread before posting. there has been enough info and how-tos in this thread to show you how to stream videos to your phone, or to convert them to play off the memory card. if you still dont understand, read the faq's at the top of the page.
